Seventeen-year review of sexual and contraceptive behavior on a college campus.

OBJECTIVES: We reviewed current sexual and contraceptive behavior of college-age men and women and compared the findings with those of similar studies in 1974 and 1979. STUDY DESIGN: A randomly selected population questionnaire was provided to students registered in the spring 1991 semester. Of the 1921 survey forms mailed, 772 (40.2%) were returned. The CHIFIT test was used to determine representativeness of sample population to target population. RESULTS: Proportionately more women than men responded, although the age grouping and academic standing were consistent with the university popul

Hormonal contraceptives and behavior: Updating the potent state of the nascent science.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use hormonal contraceptives (HCs), which have been an essential part of women's reproductive health care for decades. Throughout that time, however, research on the neural and behavioral consequences of HCs was minimal and plagued by poor methodology. HC effects - and users - were assumed to be homogenous. Fortunately, there has been a recent upswell in the number and quality of investigations, affording tentative conclusions about the roles of HCs in spatial cognition and mental health, particularly depression. Thus, this paper leverages findings from

Hormonal contraceptives as disruptors of competitive behavior: Theoretical framing and review.

Emerging evidence suggests that hormonal contraceptives (HCs) impact psychological outcomes through alterations in neurophysiology. In this review, we first introduce a theoretical framework for HCs as disruptors of steroid hormone modulation of socially competitive attitudes and behaviors. Then, we comprehensively examine prior research comparing HC users and non-users in outcomes related to competition for reproductive, social, and financial resources. Synthesis of 46 studies (n = 16,290) led to several key conclusions: HC users do not show the same menstrual cycle-related fluctuations in se

The multistate life table method: an application to contraceptive switching behavior.

In many demographic behaviors (e.g., those relating to marriage, contraception, migration, and health), people change among multiple statuses through time, sometimes leaving and then returning to the same status. Data on such behaviors are often collected in surveys as censored event histories. The multistate life table (MSLT) can be used to properly describe, in a single analysis, these complex transitions among multiple states measured in such data, but MSLT is rarely applied in the demographic literature because practical guidance is lacking on how to compute MSLTs with such data. We provid

Rethinking patient counseling techniques for changing contraceptive use behavior.

Some women who use contraception become pregnant. Determinants of pregnancy in these women are fecundity, frequency of intercourse, contraceptive method, and contraceptive behaviors. Current counseling content emphasizes the choice of method, with "education" about a limited set of use behaviors. A listing of use behaviors for oral contraceptives (OCs) shows that "use" should be conceptualized as multidimensional with numerous levels and not a simple dichotomous concept of use versus nonuse. The multidimensional understanding of "use" suggests the need for multidimensional counseling to affect

A model of premarital coitus and contraceptive behavior among female adolescents.

At the most general level, I seek to model female adolescent sexual and contraceptive behavior in terms of the social context in which it occurs. Drawing on emerging theoretical literature pertaining to social exchange theory and changes in the social positions of women (and men) and also on existing substantive literature, I apply these notions to adolescent sexuality and contraceptive usage. The reviews of the literature reveal a number of inconsistencies among those factors (variables) advanced to explain both the prevalence and frequency of premarital coitus and contraceptive employment. Genetic Association of Sexual Behavior, Sildenafil, and Hormonal Contraceptives With Mental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The observational research indicates that risky sexual activities contribute to the development of mental disorders. However, the potential causal effects of sexual behaviors, sildenafil use, and hormonal contraceptive use on mental disorders remain unclear. METHODS: We applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (univariable and multivariable MR) to assess the effects of age at first sex (AFS) and number of sexual partners (NSP) on mental disorders and sex differences, using Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data from UK Biobank and FinnGen. An observational analysis using NH

Behavioral characterization of co-exposure to cannabinoids and hormonal contraceptives in female rats.

Hormonal contraceptives are among the most widely used drugs by young healthy women to block ovulation and avoid pregnancy. They reduce the ovarian secretion of estradiol and progesterone, hormones that also modulate neuronal plasticity, cognitive functions, emotions and mood. Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug worldwide and its use is increasing among young women, many of which regularly take the "pill". Despite evidence of a bidirectional interaction between the endocannabinoid system and gonadal hormones, only very few studies have examined the consequences of cannabis consumpt

Physical Intimate Partner Violence and Contraceptive Behaviors Among Young Women.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the link between physical intimate partner violence (IPV) and contraception is key to preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life study, a longitudinal study of a racially and socioeconomically diverse population-representative random sample of 18- to 19-year-old women residing in a Michigan county in 2008-2009 and followed weekly through 2011-2012, were used. Logistic regression models of contraceptive behaviors on temporally specific measures of physical violence vic

Hormonal contraceptive use and mate retention behavior in women and their male partners.

Female hormonal contraceptive use has been associated with a variety of physical and psychological side effects. Women who use hormonal contraceptives report more intense affective responses to partner infidelity and greater overall sexual jealousy than women not using hormonal contraceptives. Recently, researchers have found that using hormonal contraceptives with higher levels of synthetic estradiol, but not progestin, is associated with significantly higher levels of self-reported jealousy in women. Here, we extend these findings by examining the relationship between mate retention behavior

Analysis of contraceptive behavior of sexually active female adolescents in the United States.

Drawing on a theoretical model of adolescent contraceptive behavior, we examined the relationships between various social and behavioral variables and contraceptive use by sexually active female adolescents. Hypotheses were tested with the use of a national random sample of sexually active female adolescents (n = 1426), aged 15 to 20 years, from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth. The data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. Noncompliance with the initial birth control method was the strongest predictor of the adolescents' contra

Contraceptive and fertility behavior of family planning clinic dropouts: a Maryland study.

A study to examine the acceptance of and drop-out from family planning clinic services in Maryland was undertaken during 1984-85 by interviewing a random sample of 1,020 women who came to the clinics as "new clients" during 1980 through 1982 when they were 20 through 39 years of age. This article examines the contraceptive and fertility behavior after their last clinic visits. The results showed that most of these women were "protected" from pregnancy risk considerably beyond their last clinic visit. However, the analysis also revealed that in spite of the reported high contraceptive use rate,

The Role of Pregnancy Intentions in U.S. Women's Contraceptive and Alcohol Use Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use in early pregnancy increases the risk for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Women who engage in heavy drinking and become pregnant when they are not actively trying to conceive are at heightened risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Identifying factors associated with greater risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancies is critical for prevention. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the odds of contraceptive nonuse and heavy drinking for women trying to conceive or ambivalent about pregnancy as compared to those trying to avoid pregnancy. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis was

Contraceptive Use Behavior Change After an Unintended Birth in Colombia and Peru.

CONTEXT: No studies using longitudinal contraceptive histories have investigated whether having an unintended birth (i.e., one resulting from an unintended pregnancy) is associated with change in contraceptive behavior, including in Colombia and Peru, where levels of unintended fertility remain high. METHODS: Monthly reproductive history calendar data from the 2010 Colombia and 2012 Peru Demographic and Health Surveys were used to study contraceptive behavior among 13,373 and 7,425 women, respectively. Transition matrices and hazard models were utilized to identify associations between prepre

Oral contraceptive use and risk of suicidal behavior among young women.

BACKGROUND: Oral contraceptive use has been previously associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior in some, but not all, samples. The use of large, representative, longitudinally-assessed samples may clarify the nature of this potential association. METHODS: We used Swedish national registries to identify women born between 1991 and 1995 (N = 216 702) and determine whether they retrieved prescriptions for oral contraceptives. We used Cox proportional hazards models to test the association between contraceptive use and first observed suicidal event (suicide attempt or death) from ag

How Oral Contraceptives Impact Social-Emotional Behavior and Brain Function.

Millions of women worldwide use oral contraceptives ('the pill'; OCs), often starting at a pubertal age when their brains are in a crucial developmental stage. Research into the social-emotional effects of OCs is of utmost importance. In this review, we provide an overview of studies that have emerged over the past decade investigating how OCs, and their main ingredients estradiol (E) and progesterone (P), influence social-emotional behaviors and underlying brain functions. Based on this overview, we present a heuristic model that postulates that OCs modulate core social-emotional behaviors an

Effects of an antiandrogenic oral contraceptive on appetite and eating behavior in bulimic women.

High androgen levels in women with bulimia nervosa may promote bulimic behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of an antiandrogenic oral contraceptive (OC) on appetite and eating behavior in women with bulimia nervosa compared to healthy controls. Twenty-one women with bulimia nervosa and 17 healthy controls matched for age and body mass index participated in the study. Basal and meal-related appetite and secretions of the satiety peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) and the appetite-stimulating peptide ghrelin were studied before and after 3 months of treatment with an
