Loss of contrast sensitivity in cystic fibrosis.

We measured the contrast sensitivity function in a 16-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis, before and during vitamin A supplementation. Before vitamin A supplementation, serum levels of vitamin A were abnormally low, the electroretinogram was reduced, and contrast sensitivity was abnormally low at all spatial frequencies. During vitamin A supplementation (25,000 IU/day), serum levels of vitamin A became low normal, the electroretinogram returned to normal, and the overall contrast sensitivity function improved by 94%. We propose that the contrast sensitivity function may be abnormal in patients

Spatial contrast sensitivity in benign intracranial hypertension.

Spatial Contrast Sensitivity (CS) was studied in 20 patients with benign intracranial hypertension (BIH). At presentation CS loss was found in 43% of the eyes, and impairment of visual acuity attributed to BIH in only 16%. Nine patients had blurred vision or visual obscurations, all of whom had abnormal CS. The clinical application of CS measurement in BIH for monitoring the progression or regression of the disease is illustrated by serial measurements in 11 patients. Progressive visual loss in longstanding papilloedema and improvement of visual function in subsiding papilloedema can occur wit

Monocular chromatic contrast threshold and achromatic contrast sensitivity in children born prematurely.

PURPOSE: To study the effect of prematurity on monocular chromatic contrast thresholds (CCT) and achromatic contrast sensitivity (ACS). DESIGN: Case-control study. METHODS: A prospective study of 59 children born at less than 33 weeks' gestation was undertaken. Subjects were identified during routine neonatal screening for retinopathy of prematurity and recalled for testing at age 7 to 13 years. Five had stage 1 retinopathy of prematurity, seven had stage 2, and three had stage 3. Sixty-eight full-term children were recruited as controls. Those with major cerebral or eye disease were exclude

Image luminance changes contrast sensitivity in visual cortex.

Accurate measures of contrast sensitivity are important for evaluating visual disease progression and for navigation safety. Previous measures suggested that cortical contrast sensitivity was constant across widely different luminance ranges experienced indoors and outdoors. Against this notion, here, we show that luminance range changes contrast sensitivity in both cat and human cortex, and the changes are different for dark and light stimuli. As luminance range increases, contrast sensitivity increases more within cortical pathways signaling lights than those signaling darks. Conversely, whe

Contrast sensitivity, V1 neural activity, and natural vision.

UNLABELLED: Contrast sensitivity is fundamental to natural visual processing and an important tool for characterizing both visual function and clinical disorders. We simultaneously measured contrast sensitivity and neural contrast response functions and compared measurements in common laboratory conditions with naturalistic conditions. In typical experiments, a subject holds fixation and a stimulus is flashed on, whereas in natural vision, saccades bring stimuli into view. Motivated by our previous V1 findings, we tested the hypothesis that perceptual contrast sensitivity is lower in natural v

Visual contrast sensitivity in children exposed to tetrachloroethylene.

This study examined relationships between indoor air, breath, and blood tetrachloroethylene (perc) levels and visual contrast sensitivity (VCS) among adult and child residents of buildings with or without a colocated dry cleaner using perc. Decreasing trends in proportions of adults or children with maximum VCS scores indicated decreased VCS at a single spatial frequency (12 cycles per degree [cpd]) among children residing in buildings with colocated dry cleaners when indoor air perc level averaged 336 μg/m³; breath perc level averaged 159.5 μg/m³; and blood perc level averaged 0.51 μg/L. Contrast sensitivity after extracapsular and intracapsular cataract extraction.

Contrast sensitivity function after cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation has been mainly correlated to the type or the material of the intraocular lens. Our purpose was to identify other possible factors, like posterior capsule, to contrast sensitivity alterations after cataract surgery, comparing patients operated for cataract by techniques that mainly differed on the posterior capsule's integrity. The intraocular lens implanted was either a posterior or an anterior chamber one, always monofocal and made of PMMA. We measured contrast sensitivity function at four spatial frequ

Circadian fluctuations of contrast sensitivity in Parkinson's disease.

Spontaneous circadian fluctuations of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) often occur, with dysfunction typically less severe in the early morning than in the afternoon. In 23 PD patients with or without a history of circadian motor fluctuations, we studied contrast sensitivity (CS), a non-motor function, considered to be dependent on dopaminergic transmission to see if it exhibits similar circadian variability. We tested CS throughout the day at 2-hour intervals beginning at 8:30 AM. To facilitate multiple testing sessions, we used a rapid, printed, forced choice test of CS not requiri

Contrast sensitivity with contact lens corrections for presbyopia.

We measured contrast sensitivity at three distances (330 mm, 660 mm and 4 m) with six contact lens and two multifocal spectacle corrections for presbyopia. The two spectacle corrections were D-segment bifocals and trifocals and the contact lens corrections were distance contact lens with lookover spectacles, soft progressive bifocals, soft concentric bifocals, monovision, modified monovision, and hard crescent segment bifocals. The spectacle corrections in general gave better results for the contrast sensitivity function (CSF), than did the contact lens corrections. Distance contact lenses wit

Contrast sensitivity and pattern ERG in Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia.

Patients with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia (WM) and age matched controls have been examined using tests of contrast sensitivity and pattern electroretinography. The patients with WM were in remission on maintenance treatment and had only moderately elevated plasma viscosity. They showed evidence of abnormal contrast sensitivity but there was no significant difference in amplitude of the pattern ERG between patients and controls.

Spatial contrast sensitivity in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Contrast sensitivity tests a basic visual function which is not examined by conventional visual acuity testing or visual evoked responses. It is frequently abnormal in patients with multiple sclerosis. The lack of relationship between VERs and SCSF implies that contrast sensitivity measures aspects of the visual system not examined by the conventional electrophysiological technique, probably visual function situated beyond the anterior visual pathway. It is therefore a useful complementary diagnostic test for patients with multiple sclerosis. Both VER and spatial contrast sensitivity separatel

Temporal contrast sensitivity in optic neuritis and amblyopia.

Temporal contrast sensitivity was measured in patients with optic neuritis and anisometropic amblyopia. In optic neuritis, attenuated sensitivity was detected at all frequency ranges; however, its degree was more severe than that of retinal diseases even when visual acuity was the same. At the convalescent stage, the low-frequency sensitivity was restored first, and high-frequency loss was observed even when the visual acuity was restored to 1.0. Two amblyopic patients showed attenuated sensitivity at high- and intermediate-frequency ranges, and in one case all frequency sensitivity attenuated

Supraliminal contrast sensitivity functions in recovered optic neuritis.

The supraliminal contrast sensitivity functions in patients with recovered optic neuritis were classified into three function types: 1) type with a decrease in sensitivity in the high and an increase in the low spatial frequency region, 2) type with flat shape as found in normal subjects, and 3) type with a decrease in the low and an increase in the high frequency region. These abnormal functions may be explained by an inhibitory interaction between two parallel channels of high and low frequency, which may have a dependence on the most central and the paracentral region in the visual fields,

Contrast sensitivity isocontours of the central visual field.

Standard automated perimetry (SAP), the most common form of perimetry used in clinical practice, is associated with high test variability, impacting clinical decision making and efficiency. Contrast sensitivity isocontours (CSIs) may reduce test variability in SAP by identifying regions of the visual field with statistically similar patterns of change that can be analysed collectively and allow a point (disease)-to-CSI (normal) comparison in disease assessment as opposed to a point (disease)-to-point (normal) comparison. CSIs in the central visual field however have limited applicability as th

Effects of astigmatic defocus on binocular contrast sensitivity.

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of astigmatism on contrast sensitivity (CS). METHODS: Eighteen normal volunteers (30.5 ± 6.0 [mean ± SD] years) were recruited. After correcting each refractive error by spectacles, against-the-rule (ATR) or with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism of +1.00, +2.00 and +3.00 D was intentionally produced in both eyes, and then binocular CS was measured. The cylindrical addition of different powers (+1.00-+3.00 D) was compensated with spherical lenses so that the spherical equivalent refraction became zero in each eye. Subsequently, the above cylindrical addition was mon

Prediction of letter contrast sensitivity using videokeratographic indices.

PURPOSE: To analyze the relationship between corneal topography and letter contrast sensitivity. METHOD: Experiments were conducted on 59 eyes of 51 patients who had best spectacle-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better and no ocular pathology except for the corneal shape. Thirty-nine eyes had an abnormal topographic pattern resulting from keratoconus, and the other 20 eyes showed a normal topographic pattern. Videokeratography was performed with the TMS-2 videokeratoscope, and the surface regularity index, surface asymmetry index, and coefficient of variation of power were obtained for e

Effects of optical correction media on contrast sensitivity.

Contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) were obtained for 257 emmetropic subjects (514 eyes) and 35 contact lens users (64 eyes) in the Republic of Singapore Air Force using the Vistech Contrast Test System. For the emmetropes, contrast sensitivity tests were carried out with and without plano spectacles (PS). For the myopes, we compared their performances with spectacles, daily-wear soft contact lenses (CLs), and CL plus PS at Snellen visual acuities of 6/6 or better. Paired t-tests showed that there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) when CSFs of the emmetropes were measured with and w

Peripheral contrast sensitivity in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Contrast sensitivity has been measured in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension, the latter graded into high, medium, and low risk clinical groups. Measurements were made centrally and peripherally at 10 degrees, 15 degrees, 20 degrees, and 25 degrees off-axis at each of the four meridians 45 degrees, 135 degrees, 225 degrees, and 315 degrees. A sine wave grating of 1.9 cycles/degree, reversing at 1 Hz was used. It was displayed on a 100-Hz refresh rate monitor. Normal values were established to compare those from 41 eyes from patients with either primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) wi

Contrast sensitivity and the diagnosis dysthyroid optic neuropathy.

Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) was investigated in 19 patients (34 eyes) with clinical signs and symptoms of dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). CSF was disturbed in 33 eyes and was shown to improve after orbital decompression. These results indicate that the CSF may be a useful supplementary test of visual function in patients with DON.

Contrast sensitivity versus visual acuity in retinal disease.

A large group of individuals with retinal disease were tested prospectively for contrast sensitivity by means of Arden gratings. A subgroup of 19 were also tested with the Nicolet automated television system. Individuals with macular or peripheral dystrophy showed a general reduction in contrast sensitivity as visual acuity decreased. The loss of contrast sensitivity was more prominent for high spatial frequencies (6.4 cycles per degree) than for low ones (0.2 cycles per degree). Similar results were obtained for patients with achromatopsia and congenital stationary night blindness. Patients w
