Controlins I-X, Resin Glycosides from the Seeds of Convolvulus tricolor and Their Biological Activities.

Ten new resin glycosides, controlins I-X (1-10), were isolated from the seeds of Convolvulus tricolor. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analysis as well as by chemical means. Compounds were identified as glycosidic acid methyl esters, considered as artifacts generated via transesterification with MeOH from natural resin glycosides. Compound 1 is the first nonasaccharide resin glycoside, while compounds 2-7 are rare octasaccharide resin glycosides. Compounds 5, 6, and 8 could inhibit the nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-induced BV-2 cells, while compounds 3, 5, an

The immunomodulatory effects of Ipomoea carnea in rats vary depending on life stage.

Ipomoea carnea Jacq. ssp. fistulosa (Mart. Ex Choisy; Convolvulaceae; I. carnea) possesses a toxic component: an indolizidine alkaloid swainsonine (SW) that has immunomodulatory effects due to its inhibition of glycoprotein metabolism. It is also known that SW is excreted into both the amniotic fluid and milk of female rats exposed to I. carnea. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether SW exposure, either in utero or from the milk of dams treated with I. carnea, modulates offspring immune function into adulthood. In addition, adult (70 days old) and juvenile rats (21 days old) were

Fitness of the Papaya Mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), after Transferring from Solanum tuberosum to Carica papaya, Ipomoea batatas, and Alternanthera philoxeroides.

The papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a polyphagous invasive pest in China. The effect that the shifting of the host plant has on the fitness of a polyphagous pest is critical to its prevalence and potential pest control. In order to assess the fitness changes of P. marginatus after transferal from potato (Solanum tuberosum (Tubiflorae: Solanaceae)) to papaya (Carica papaya (Parietales: Caricacea)), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (Tubiflorae: Convolvulaceae)), and alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Centrospermae: Ama

Suppression of Plant Defenses by Herbivorous Mites Is Not Associated with Adaptation to Host Plants.

Some herbivores suppress plant defenses, which may be viewed as a result of the coevolutionary arms race between plants and herbivores. However, this ability is usually studied in a one-herbivore-one-plant system, which hampers comparative studies that could corroborate this hypothesis. Here, we extend this paradigm and ask whether the herbivorous spider-mite Tetranychus evansi, which suppresses the jasmonic-acid pathway in tomato plants, is also able to suppress defenses in other host plants at different phylogenetic distances from tomatoes. We test this using different plants from the Solana

Immunomodulatory and Antioxidant Properties of Ipomoea batatas Flour and Extracts Obtained by Green Extraction.

Sweet potato (SP), Ipomoea batatas Lam, belongs to the Convolvulaceae family. It produces edible storage roots. Currently, orange varieties contribute to improving food systems and managing vitamin A deficiency. Processing of this food crop into flour allows better conservation. However, nutrition health data regarding SP flour obtained by green extraction remains scarce. In this study, we therefore explored its phytochemistry and its associated bioactivity potential for human health. We analyzed the nutritional composition of orange flesh sweet potato (OFSP) flour and assessed the antioxidant

Alpha-mannosidosis caused by toxic plants in ruminants of Argentina.

It is well known that several of the swainsonine-containing plant species found widespread around the world have a negative economic impact in each country. In Argentina, most of the information on the poisonous plant species that produce α-mannosidosis is published in Spanish and thus not available to most English-speaking researchers interested in toxic plants. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the information about swainsonine-containing plants in Argentina, which are extensively distributed throughout different ecoregions of the country. To date, five species from three gen

Convolvulus pluricaulis (CP) is a common Indian herb, largely employed in Ayurvedic medicine and known for its neuroprotective and neuroinflammatory action. Its effectiveness against several pathologic/sub-pathologic conditions is widely accepted, but it is not yet completely chemically characterized. In recent years, several researchers have pointed out the involvement of CP and other Convolvulaceae in lipidic and glucidic metabolism, particularly in the control of hyperlipidaemia and diabetic conditions. In this scenario, the aim of the study was to chemically characterize the medium polarit

Quamoclit angulata extract supplementation attenuates hepatic damage via regulation of AMPK/SIRT associated hepatic lipid metabolism in streptozotocin and high fat diet-induced T2DM mice.

Quamoclit angulata (QA) is a species of the Convolvulaceae family and has a regulatory effect on glucose homeostasis. However, the effects of QA on hyperglycemia-induced hepatic damage has not been elucidated. We hypothesized that QA extract (QAE) would alleviate hepatic damage through regulation of hepatic lipid accumulation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM was induced by streptozotocin-high-fat diet in C57BL6 male mice for 8 weeks. The diabetic mice were supplemented with QAE at low dose (5 mg/kg) or high dose (HQ, 10 mg/kg) by oral gavage every day for 12 weeks. Histopathological ch
