Behavioral synchronization of two individuals during cooperative interaction: the role of the mentalization ability as measured by the reading the mind in the eyes test.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonally synchronized behaviors play a fundamental role in social interactions. An important prereqvisite for behavioral synchronization is the mentalization ability of the individuals involved in the interaction. While the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) is widely applied to measure mentalization, most studies of RMET used single-subject designs, which lack ecological validity and have limited generalizability for real, on-going, reciprocal social interactions. Using a two-subject design, our objectives were to examine (i) the predictive validity of RMET for the sy

Cooperative regulation of anxiety and panic-related defensive behaviors in the rat periaqueductal grey matter by 5-HT1A and μ-receptors.

Previous results with the elevated T-maze (ETM) test indicate that the antipanic action of serotonin (5-HT) in the dorsal periaqueductal grey (dPAG) depends on the activation endogenous opioid peptides. The aim of the present work was to investigate the interaction between opioid- and serotonin-mediated neurotransmission in the modulation of defensive responses in rats submitted to the ETM. The obtained results showed that intra-dPAG administration of morphine significantly increased escape latency, a panicolytic-like effect that was blocked by pre-treatment with intra-dPAG injection of either

Gestational immune activation and Tsc2 haploinsufficiency cooperate to disrupt fetal survival and may perturb social behavior in adult mice.

Approximately 40-50% of individuals affected by tuberous sclerosis (TSC) develop autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). One possible explanation for this partial penetrance is an interaction between TSC gene mutations and other risk factors such as gestational immune activation. In this study, we report the interactive effects of these two ASD risk factors in a mouse model of TSC. Combined, but not single, exposure had adverse effects on intrauterine survival. Additionally, provisional results suggest that these factors synergize to disrupt social approach behavior in adult mice. Moreover, studies

A Novel Cooperative Behavior Assay in Rats Reveals Distinct Social Coordination Strategies of Increasing Complexity and Social Reciprocity Deficits in a Model of Fragile X Syndrome.

Cooperative behavior, the ability of individuals to coordinate their actions toward shared goals, is fundamental to survival and social success across species. However, the mechanisms supporting cooperation and disruptions leading to social deficits in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder remain poorly understood. To address these questions, we developed a novel cooperation task in which rat pairs had to visit matching reward wells on paired spatial mazes under deterministic and probabilistic reward contingencies, utilizing dyads of littermate wild-type (WT) and Fmr1 k

ILF2 cooperates with ILF3/KLF16 to drive colorectal cancer progression via modulating the behaviors of both tumor cells and M2 macrophages.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a malignant tumor originating from the epithelial cells of the colon and rectum. Interleukin enhancer binding factor 2 (ILF2), an emerging RNA-binding protein, has been implicated in the regulation of multiple cancer-related processes. However, its specific role in the pathogenesis and progression of CRC remains largely unexplored. In this study, we systematically investigated the functional role of ILF2 in CRC through multi-level experiments. ILF2 expression was first assessed in clinical CRC tissues via quantitative real-time PCR and western blot. Functional implic

Utility-driven cooperation and emergent group diversity in the N-player Stag Hunt game: A framework relevant to collective biological behavior.

The coordination dilemma inherent in the N-player Stag Hunt game provides a powerful framework for studying the emergence of cooperation in social and biological systems. Traditional analyses of this game emphasize the tension between individual risk aversion and collective benefit. In this study, we extend the classical N-player Stag Hunt model by incorporating utility functions that formalize how intra-group cooperation and inter-group competition interact. Using this framework, we derive the Nash equilibria analytically, revealing how different utility formulations can generate a wide spect

Theoretical study on the cooperative effects of solvent and π-conjugation extension as well as InterHB on the fluorescent properties and ESIPT behaviors of flavonol fluorophores.

Recently, two flavonol derivatives, 3-hydroxy-2-(p-tolyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (FL1) and 3-hydroxy-2-(p-tolyl)-4H-benzo[g]chromen-4-one (FL2) with excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics were synthesized in the experiment (ACS Sensors, 10 (2025) 2287-2296). However, experimental techniques cannot provide detailed information on the ESIPT mechanisms of FL1 and FL2. There is currently no theoretical study on how different solvents affect their photophysical properties. On this foundation, the photophysical properties and ESIPT behaviors of FL1 and FL2 were systematically

Microglia-targeting nanosystems that cooperatively deliver Chinese herbal ingredients alleviate behavioral and cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease model mice.

The effective treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is challenging because of its complex and controversial pathological mechanisms. Moreover, multiple barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB), reduce drug delivery efficiency. Microglia-related neuroinflammation has recently attracted increasing attention as a possible cause of AD and has become a novel therapeutic target. Therefore, overcoming the BBB and targeted delivery of anti-inflammatory agents to microglia seem to be effective practical strategies for treating AD. A large proportion of natural active extracts possess exceptional

Partner Cooperation, Conflict, Maternal Mental Health, and Parenting Behaviors in Rural Kenya: Towards a Two-Generational Understanding of Gender Transformation Benefits.

Increasing partner cooperation is an established approach to reducing intimate partner violence. This strategy, known in the literature as "gender transformation," benefits mental and physical health of women and men. Less is known about the potential for gender transformation strategies to improve the nurturing context for children. We hypothesize that increasing partner cooperation, a common benefit of community-based empowerment programs, would decrease child maltreatment through reducing intimate partner conflict and improving maternal mental health. This study utilizes cohort data from wo

Effects of tryptophan depletion on the performance of an iterated Prisoner's Dilemma game in healthy adults.

Adaptive social behavior often necessitates choosing to cooperate with others for long-term gains at the expense of noncooperative behaviors giving larger immediate gains. Although little is know about the neural substrates that support cooperative over noncooperative behaviors, recent research has shown that mutually cooperative behavior in the context of a mixed-motive game, the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD), is associated with increased neural activity within reinforcement circuitry. Other research attests to a role for serotonin in the modulation of social behavior and in reward processing. In t

Comparison of Chairside Cooperative Ability with Social Quotient of Mentally Challenged Children.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Fostering a positive dental attitude in children to enhance their oral health status and engaging them positively throughout their dental experience is the cornerstone of pediatric dentistry practices. The behavior of the child in a dental setting depends upon their emotional, psychological, and mental developmental state. Children with special health needs tend to have more anxiety than healthy children. A low level of social intelligence (SI), fewer adaptive skills, and poor social development take a longer time to accept dental treatment. Thus, social development can im

Anger, guilt, and repeated cooperation in social dilemmas.

A consistent finding in behavioral economics is that in social dilemma situations in which individuals must decide between individual and group welfare, cooperation declines over time eventually resulting in noncooperation. Extant theorizing addressing phenomena such as adaptive belief-learning focus solely on cognitive explanations. Based on the appraisal-tendency framework, we propose and show that the development of cooperation has a strong emotional component. Others' actual cooperative behavior compared to their expected cooperative behavior does not only result in adapting beliefs (cogni

Boundary Mismatch Free Energy Links Activity Coefficients and Cooperativity in Molecular Solids.

Predicting cooperative behavior and thermodynamic nonideality in heterogeneous molecular solids remains challenging because activity coefficients and collective phase behavior are typically treated within separate theoretical frameworks. Here, we show that both quantities can be interpreted as manifestations of a common boundary mismatch free energy associated with local structural incompatibility within the correlated crystalline environments. Using a minimal coarse-grained statistical-mechanical framework, the energetic penalty associated with boundary formation is shown to govern both exces

Getting less than their fair share: Maltreated youth are hyper-cooperative yet vulnerable to exploitation in a public goods game.

Human cooperative behavior has long been thought to decline under adversity. However, studies have primarily examined perceived patterns of cooperation, with little eye to actual cooperative behavior embedded within social interaction. Game-theoretical paradigms can help close this gap by unpacking subtle differences in how cooperation unfolds during initial encounters. This study is the first to use a child-appropriate, virtual, public goods game to study actual cooperative behavior in 329 participants aged 9-16 years with histories of maltreatment (n = 99) and no maltreatment (n = 230) while

Inhibitory Theta Burst Stimulation Highlights the Role of Left aIPS and Right TPJ during Complementary and Imitative Human-Avatar Interactions in Cooperative and Competitive Scenarios.

Competitive and cooperative interactions are based on anticipation or synchronization with the partner's actions. Both forms of interaction may either require performing imitative or complementary movements with respect to those performed by our partner. We explored how parietal regions involved in the control of imitative behavior (temporo-parietal junction, TPJ), goal coding and visuo-motor integration (anterior intraparietal sulcus, aIPS) contribute to the execution of imitative and complementary movements during cooperative and competitive interactions. To this aim, we delivered off-line n

Cooperative Binding and Stepwise Encapsulation of Drug Molecules by Sulfonylcalixarene-Based Metal-Organic Supercontainers.

The cooperative binding behavior of a face-directed octahedral metal-organic supercontainer featuring one endo cavity and six exo cavities was thoroughly examined in chloroform solution through ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) titration technique using two representative drug molecules as the guests. The titration curves and their nonlinear fit to Hill equation strongly suggest the efficient encapsulation of the guest molecules by the synthetic host, which exhibit interesting cooperative and stepwise binding behavior. Based on the control experiments using tetranuclear complex as a reference, it i

Evolutionary establishment of moral and double moral standards through spatial interactions.

Situations where individuals have to contribute to joint efforts or share scarce resources are ubiquitous. Yet, without proper mechanisms to ensure cooperation, the evolutionary pressure to maximize individual success tends to create a tragedy of the commons (such as over-fishing or the destruction of our environment). This contribution addresses a number of related puzzles of human behavior with an evolutionary game theoretical approach as it has been successfully used to explain the behavior of other biological species many times, from bacteria to vertebrates. Our agent-based model distingui

Children use common knowledge to solve coordination problems.

Recent work suggests that common knowledge is an important cognitive mechanism for coordinating prosocial behavior, in part because it reduces uncertainty about others' cooperative behavior. However, it remains unclear whether children also rely on common knowledge to solve coordination problems. Here we examined whether 6- to 9-year-old children (N = 133) from the United States were more likely to attempt to coordinate when they had common knowledge about a joint payoff. Participants saw 3 vignettes that modeled the structure of a 2-player coordination problem and were provided with common kn

One single-person bicycling enhances interpersonal cooperation via increasing interpersonal neural synchronization in left frontal cortex.

Previous findings have shown a strong relationship between sports and interpersonal cooperative behavior. Physical activity is the basic form of sport. In this study, we investigated the effect of physical activity on interpersonal cooperative behavior and its inter-brain correlates. Eighty college students were recruited and randomly divided into the experimental or control group (20 dyads per each). The experimental group performed a 30-min of moderate intensity single-person cycling exercise, while the control group performed a 30-min single-person sitting. Interpersonal cooperative behavio

'Weaving of perspectives': lessons from co-production within an international mental-health science collaboration.

Co-production is increasingly recognised as central to improving the quality, relevance and ethical integrity of mental health science, yet evidence is still needed on how lived experience involvement can be meaningfully embedded and sustained in complex research settings. Global Alliance for Living Evidence on Anxiety, Depression and Psychosis (GALENOS) is a Wellcome-funded collaboration conducting living systematic reviews and evidence triangulation, with people with lived experience contributing as Experiential Advisors and through a Global Lived Experience Advisory Board.
