The gene regulatory mechanisms shaping the heterogeneity of venom production in the Cape coral snake.

BACKGROUND: Venoms and their associated glands and delivery structures have evolved numerous times among animals. Within these venom systems, the molecular, cellular, and morphological components interact and co-evolve to generate distinct, venom phenotypes that are increasingly recognized as models for studying adaptive evolution. However, toxins are often unevenly distributed across venom-producing tissues in patterns that are not necessarily adaptive but instead likely result from constraints associated with protein secretion. RESULTS: We generate a high-quality draft genome of the Cape co

Transient Megaesophagus Following Coral Snake Envenomation in Three Dogs (2013-2018).

A 12 yr old dachshund, a 7 yr old English springer spaniel, and a 1.5 yr old French bulldog presented following envenomation by a coral snake. Each patient displayed evidence of varying degrees of lower motor neuron dysfunction, but all three developed transient megaesophagus. Two patients developed secondary aspiration pneumonia, with one requiring mechanical ventilation, which the owners declined, resulting in euthanasia. The third developed hypoventilation without aspiration pneumonia, was mechanically ventilated, and was successfully weaned. In the two surviving patients, the megaesophagus

Myalgia as a Symptom of Envenomation by the Eastern Coral Snake, Micrurus Fulvius: A Case Report.

We present the case of a patient who developed myalgia as the primary symptom of envenomation by the eastern coral snake, Micrurus fulvius. The patient was evaluated and treated in the emergency department. Physical examination did not demonstrate any neuromuscular abnormalities. On consultation with the poison control center, the patient's myalgia was determined to be an effect of envenomation, and 5 vials of North American coral snake antivenin were administered. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit where his symptoms resolved. He was discharged the following day after remaini

Consecutive envenomation of two men bitten by the same coral snake (Micrurus corallinus).

Objective: To report two patients who developed systemic neurotoxicity after consecutive bites by the same coral snake.Case report: Two previously healthy men (32-year-old and 34-year-old) found a coral snake in a woodpile while collecting wood for a barbecue. During the barbecue, both men became drunk and "played" with the snake, believing that they were handling a false coral snake, and were bitten within a few minutes of each other. Both patients were admitted to a referral tertiary care hospital (175 km from where the bites occurred) 16 hours and 19 hours postbite; both showed similar feat

Envenomation by the Eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius fulvius). A study of 39 victims.

We gathered data on 39 victims of Eastern coral snake bite over a 12-year period. The most common situation resulting in snakebite was erroneous identification of the snake as the nonpoisonous scarlet king snake. While no patient died, several experienced severe envenomation, including bulbospinal respiratory paralysis. We found that neurologic symptoms may be delayed for 12 hours, and then may be precipitous. Envenomation occurs in 75% of the persons bitten by a coral snake. Antivenin is effective and should be intravenously administered early to patients who have been bitten by a positively

Neurotoxic envenomation by the South African coral snake (Aspidelaps lubricus): A case report.

The South African coral snake (Aspidelaps lubricus, Elapidae) has not previously been reported to cause any neurotoxic envenomations in humans. We recently treated a 44-year-old man who was bitten twice, once in each hand, by a captive South African coral snake (Aspidelaps lubricus) while feeding the female snake who had recently laid eggs. Approximately one hour after receiving the bite, he developed vomiting, respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, and paralysis of the bulbar and upper extremity muscles, with retention of voluntary motor control in the lower extremities. Lymphatic route of transport and pharmacokinetics of Micrurus fulvius (coral snake) venom in sheep.

The contribution of the lymphatic system to the absorption and systemic bioavailability of Micrurus fulvius venom after subcutaneous (SC) administration was assessed using a central lymph-cannulated sheep model. Micrurus fulvius venom was administered either by intravenous bolus (IV) or subcutaneous injection (SC) in 12 sheep with and without thoracic duct cannulation and drainage. Venom concentration in serum and lymph was determined by a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in samples collected over a 6-hour period and in tissues harvested at the end of the experiment. Action of Micrurus dumerilii carinicauda coral snake venom on the mammalian neuromuscular junction.

The venoms of coral snakes (mainly Micrurus species) have pre- and/or postsynaptic actions, but only a few of these have been studied in detail. We have investigated the effects of Micrurus dumerilii carinicauda coral snake venom on neurotransmission in rat isolated phrenic nerve-diaphragm muscle and chick biventer cervicis preparations stimulated directly or indirectly. M. d. carinicauda venom (5 or 10 microg/ml) produced neuromuscular blockade in rat (85-90% in 291.8+/-7.3 min and 108.3+/-13.8, respectively; n=5) and avian (95.0+/-2.0 min; 5 microg/ml, n=5) preparations. Hemostatic and toxinological diversities in venom of Micrurus tener tener, Micrurus fulvius fulvius and Micrurus isozonus coral snakes.

The coral snake Micrurus tener tener (Mtt) from the Elapidae family inhabits the southwestern United States and produces severe cases of envenomations. Although the majority of Mtt venom components are neurotoxins and phospholipase A₂s, this study demonstrated, by SDS-PAGE and molecular exclusion chromatography (MEC), that these venoms also contain high-molecular-weight proteins between 50 and 150 kDa that target the hemostatic system. The biological aspects of other Micrurus venoms were also studied, such as the LD₅₀s of Micrurus isozonus (from 0.52 to 0.61 mg/kg). A pool from these venoms pr

The challenge in detecting risk areas of snakebite when case rates are low: the case of Amazonian coral snakes.

Identifying risk areas for envenomation by animals is relevant for public health, such as strategic distribution of antivenoms. Coral snakes are highly diverse in the Amazon, inhabit natural and human-modified environments, and the outcome of the cases tends to be serious and potentially lethal due to their neurotoxic venom. By integrating species' geographical records and environmental variables, we used species distribution modeling to predict the distribution of coral snake species in the Brazilian Amazonia. We analyzed the relationship between the predicted distribution of coral snake spec

A Quantitative Analysis of Micrurus Coral Snakes Reveals Unexpected Variation in Stereotyped Anti-Predator Displays Within a Mimicry System.

Warning signals in chemically defended organisms are critical components of predator-prey interactions, often requiring multiple coordinated display components for effective communication. When threatened by a predator, venomous coral snakes (genus Micrurus) display a vigorous, non-locomotory thrashing behavior that has previously been qualitatively described. Given the high contrast and colorful banding patterns of these snakes, this thrashing display is hypothesized to be a key component of a complex aposematic signal under strong stabilizing selection across species in a mimicry system. Genus Calliophis of Asiatic coral snakes: A deficiency of venom cross-reactivity and neutralization against seven regional elapid antivenoms.

Venoms of Calliophis bivirgata and Calliophis intestinalis exhibited moderate binding activities toward Neuro Bivalent Antivenom (Taiwan) but not the other six elapid monovalent or bivalent antivenoms available in the region. All antivenoms failed to neutralize C. bivirgata venom lethality in mice. The findings indicate the need to validate antivenom cross-reactivity with in vivo cross-neutralization, and imply that distinct antigens of Calliophis venoms should be incorporated in the production of a pan-regional poly-specific antivenom.

Regional Differences in Systemic Toxicity Following Texas Coral Snake (Micrurus tener) Envenomations.

BackgroundThe Texas coral snake, Micrurus tener, is one of three elapid species native to the continental United States. The purpose of the study was to describe the clinical features of their envenomation.MethodsWe reviewed all human coral snake bites reported to the Texas Poison Center Network between January 2000 and December 2023. We excluded informational calls and cases in which the snake responsible for the bite was not confirmed as M. tener. Finally, we excluded bite victims who did not seek medical attention and those for whom no clinical information was available. The data collected

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Developing After a Coral Snake Bite: A Case Report.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) usually occurs after an inciting injury. Poor understanding of pathophysiology, management, and disease awareness has led to misdiagnosis of this condition. We report a rare case of a 69-year-old male who developed CRPS following a Florida Coral snake bite on his right foot. Initially, it was misdiagnosed as recurrent cellulitis; however, he developed chronic right lower extremity (RLE) pain with worsening flares associated with right leg swelling and erythema. Examination was remarkable for nonpitting edema, erythema, and severe tenderness to light touch

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Asian Coral Snake Bites in Thailand: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Asian coral snakes are distributed throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, but clinical data on their envenomation remain limited. Using a 10-year retrospective dataset from the Ramathibodi Poison Center, we investigated the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of Asian coral snake envenomation in Thailand. Patient demographics, clinical and laboratory data, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed descriptively. Fifty-two patients were included. Sinomicrurus macclellandi was the most frequently reported species. Most bites occurred during the rainy season and

In vivo neutralization of coral snake venoms with an oligoclonal nanobody mixture in a murine challenge model.

Oligoclonal mixtures of broadly-neutralizing antibodies can neutralize complex compositions of similar and dissimilar antigens, making them versatile tools for the treatment of e.g., infectious diseases and animal envenomations. However, these biotherapeutics are complicated to develop due to their complex nature. In this work, we describe the application of various strategies for the discovery of cross-neutralizing nanobodies against key toxins in coral snake venoms using phage display technology. We prepare two oligoclonal mixtures of nanobodies and demonstrate their ability to neutralize th

MmTX1 and MmTX2 from coral snake venom potently modulate GABAA receptor activity.

GABAA receptors shape synaptic transmission by modulating Cl(-) conductance across the cell membrane. Remarkably, animal toxins that specifically target GABAA receptors have not been identified. Here, we report the discovery of micrurotoxin1 (MmTX1) and MmTX2, two toxins present in Costa Rican coral snake venom that tightly bind to GABAA receptors at subnanomolar concentrations. Studies with recombinant and synthetic toxin variants on hippocampal neurons and cells expressing common receptor compositions suggest that MmTX1 and MmTX2 allosterically increase GABAA receptor susceptibility to agoni

Neutralization of two North American coral snake venoms with United States and Mexican antivenoms.

Elapid snakes throughout the world are considered very lethal, containing neurotoxic venoms that affect the nervous system. When humans are envenomated it is considered a serious medical emergency, and antivenom is the main form of treatment considered, in spite of the fact that some patients may only survive under intensive therapy treatment such as respiratory support. Coral snakes are part of the family Elapidae and envenomations by these snakes are very low (<2% of total snakebites) in most countries from southeastern United States to Argentina. In the United States, there are only two spe
