Factors affecting the lipid and apolipoprotein levels of cord sera.

In studying the human lipid transport system as it changes from the fetal to the adult form, data were collected on cord sera levels of lipids and apolipoproteins (A-I, A-II, ApoB, C-I, C-II, C-III, ApoD, and ApoE) from infants whose lipid metabolism might have been modified by a variety of factors present before, at, or after delivery. The results clearly indicated that many factors affect the levels of both lipids and apolipoproteins at birth. Method of delivery had little effect except in relation to either fetal immaturity (increased total cholesterol) or fetal stress (increased triglyceri

Evaluation of factors affecting total nucleated cells in umbilical cord blood collected for the Calabria Cord Blood Bank.

BACKGROUND: Total nucleated cell (TNC) count is the most important biological feature to consider in assessing the quality of umbilical cord blood (UCB) for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation. Certain obstetric factors have been reported to increase TNC count in UCB units collected for transplantation. The aim of our study was to analyze how various maternal, neonatal and obstetric factors affected TNC count in the UCBs we collected for our cord blood bank in southern Italy. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 634 medical records of UCBs collected by Calabria Cord Blo

Spinal cord injury at birth: a hidden causative factor.

UNLABELLED: A case of perinatally acquired spinal cord injury (SCI) is presented. The foetus was vigorous until birth, the breech presented and delivery was performed by a non-traumatic Caesarean section. The infant displayed symptoms of severe SCI but diagnosis was delayed due to severe co-morbidity. Diagnostic considerations are briefly reviewed. Ventilatory support was withdrawn at the age of 20 days when the infant had still not exhibited any respiratory effort or spontaneous movements. Autopsy revealed a serious congenital malalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae and at the histologic

Personality factors in pathogenesis of polyps and nodules of vocal cords.

Patients who were diagnosed as polyps or nodules of vocal cords (PN group), and two control groups were tested with Japanese version of Maudsley Personality Inventory to evaluate the personality characteristics of patients with these behavior-induced vocal cord diseases. PN group showed significantly higher E (extraversion-introversion) scores than each control group. This extraversive tendency had no relation to their age, sex, polyp or nodule, and occupation. N (neuroticism) scores were not significantly different between PN group, and each control group. L (lying) scores of PN group were si

[RISK FACTORS, COMPLICATIONS AND OUTCOMES OF PREGNANCIES WITH VELAMENTOUS CORD INSERTION].

INTRODUCTION: A velamentous cord insertion (VCI) describes a peripheral umbilical cord insertion to the placenta with blood vessels from the cord traversing fetal membranes before reaching the placental margin. These vessels remain unprotected and exposed to pressure and injury during pregnancy and labor. OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk factors for VCI, and assess the risk for complications and adverse outcomes of pregnancies with VCI. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of women who gave birth at Soroka Medical Center between the years 1988 to 2011. We examined the risk factors, complic

Factors that regulate spinal cord position after expansive open-door laminoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Although appropriate dorsal migration of the spinal cord is a desired end point of cervical laminoplasty, it is difficult to predict in advance the spinal cord position after surgery and to control it during surgery. The aim of the present study was to investigate the factors that affect postoperative spinal cord position after cervical laminoplasty using multivariable analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 56 consecutive patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy treated by open-door laminoplasty. The postoperative anterior space of the spinal cord was

Umbilical cord blood transplantation: review of factors affecting the hospitalized patient.

The use of umbilical cord blood (UCB) as a stem cell donor source has dramatically increased over the last 2 decades. Patients undergoing UCB transplantation share medical management issues with patients receiving a hematopoietic stem cell transplantion using adult donor sources (peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow stem cells) and may also have more complex medical issues that appear to be related to delayed immune recovery from UCB-derived stem cells. The interface with critical care providers is likely to occur in the transplant and posttransplant setting. Patients may experience UCB

Factors predicting single-unit predominance after double umbilical cord blood transplantation.

Double umbilical cord blood transplantation (dUCBT), developed as a strategy to treat large number of patients with hematologic malignancies, frequently leads to the long-term establishment of a new hematopoietic system maintained by cells derived from a single umbilical cord blood unit. However, predicting which unit will predominate has remained elusive. This retrospective study examined the risk factor associated with unit predominance in 262 patients with hematologic malignancies who underwent dUCBT with subsequent hematopoietic recovery and complete chimerism between 2001 and 2009. Dual c

Factors associated with survival after bladder cancer in spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors influencing survival in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and bladder cancer. We hypothesized that bladder cancer survivors would have undergone more intense genitourinary surveillance and would have had fewer risk factors for bladder cancer. DESIGN: Case-control study. PARTICIPANTS/METHODS: Eight participants with SCI who had survived at least 5 years (survivors) with bladder cancer were compared with 12 SCI controls who had died due to bladder cancer. Data was obtained retrospectively through medical record review and wer

Maternal risk factors for abnormal vascular coiling of the umbilical cord.

The objective of this paper is to identify maternal risk factors for abnormal vascular coiling of the umbilical cord. The umbilical cords of 657 neonates were examined and the coiling index determined by dividing the total number of complete vascular coils by the length of the cord in cm. Obstetrical history, delivery data, and neonatal outcome were also evaluated. The frequency distribution of umbilical coiling index was normal (10 th and 90th percentile and mean +/- SD = 0.17, 0.37, and 0.26 +/- 0.09 coils/cm, respectively). Maternal risk factors for abnormal vascular coiling were extremes o

Contributing Factors to Endothelial Dysfunction in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are at a greater risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) than able-bodied individuals due to the high risk of endothelial dysfunction. SUMMARY: For instance, patients with SCIs lose autonomic control of the heart and vasculature, which results in severe fluctuations in blood pressure. These oscillations between hypotension and hypertension have been shown to damage blood vessel endothelial cells and may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, the loss of skeletal muscle control results in skeletal
