Positive correlation of corneal thickness and endothelial cell loss. Serial measurements after cataract surgery.

A significant linear correlation was found between increase in corneal thickness (delta CT) in the immediate postoperative period and percentage of cell loss one and six months after surgery in a prospective study on cataract surgery. Eyes were grouped according to delta CT, and the groups were compared according to the percentage of cell loss. Eyes with delta CT of 0.1 mm or more at five days lost significantly more cells at one and six months than eyes with delta CT of less than 0.025 mm. Eyes were then regrouped according to the percentage of cell loss. Those with cell loss of 30% or more w

Accelerated corneal endothelial cell loss in two patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis following phacoemulsification.

BACKGROUND: Generally, the loss rate of human endothelial cells (HCEC) in routine cataract surgery is 8.5%. When the corneal endothelial cells density (ECD) drops, the HCEC may decompensate to keep cornea dehydration which leads to corneal edema. Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is an uncommon autoimmune disease involving multiple organs including eyes such as conjunctivitis, scleritis, uveitis, and corneal ulcer. In this study, we report two cases of GPA whose corneal ECD decreased significantly after phacoemulsification cataract surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: In the first case of 69-year

Corneal endothelial cell loss after multiple vitreoretinal procedures and the use of silicone oil.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Corneal decompensation and complications are a frequent cause of visual loss after vitreoretinal surgery. This paper presents data regarding endothelial cell loss in aphakic and pseudophakic silicone oil filled eyes when oil was retained for many months. This study updates our previous investigation on the subject. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The corneal endothelial cell count of 10 eyes of 10 consecutive patients who had undergone vitreoretinal surgery, including fluid-gas exchange and ultimately silicone oil placement, were obtained. The patients underwent an average of

Comparative Analysis of Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss After Phacoemulsification in Microcornea versus Normal-Sized Corneas.

BACKGROUND: Phacoemulsification is inevitably accompanied by loss of corneal endothelial cells, and microcornea eyes with crowded anterior segments may be more susceptible to this damage. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare endothelial cell loss (ECL) after cataract phacoemulsification surgery between eyes with microcornea and those with normal-sized corneas. METHODS: This retrospective study included 50 eyes from 50 patients with microcornea and 120 eyes from 120 patients with normal-sized corneas who underwent phacoemulsification. Demographic data and biometric parameters were evaluated p
