Effect of Clear Corneal Incisions via Femtosecond Laser Versus Manual Incisions on Corneal Aberrations in Cataract Surgery.

This study aimed to evaluate whether clear corneal incisions (CCIs) created with the FEMTO LDV Z8 femtosecond laser during cataract surgery are non-inferior to manual CCIs in terms of surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and higher-order aberrations (HOAs). A total of 78 cataract patients were randomly assigned to two groups: 38 eyes underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), and 40 eyes underwent conventional manual cataract surgery (CCS). Preoperative and six-week postoperative SIA, HOAs, and all topographic and refractive data were analysed for both groups. FLACS-generat

Unraveling the impact of laser refractive surgery on corneal ectasia: an in silico study.

INTRODUCTION: Laser refractive surgeries are a safe option for low-to-moderate refractive corrections, providing excellent visual outcomes. Over the years, various procedures have been introduced into clinical practice, but the most performed today remain Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). Although laser refractive treatments are considered safe, clinicians have focused on the risk of post-surgical ectasia, a rare but serious complication. Ectasia is characterized by progressive corneal thinning and steepeni

Suction Break During Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery and Misplaced Laser Beam Delivery to the Corneal Layers.

A 68-year-old man with senile cataract underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in his left eye. Only anterior capsulotomy and lens fragmentation were planned with a femtosecond laser. Docking of the patient interface and anterior capsulotomy were completed without any complications. During the lens fragmentation process, the patient could not resist the temptation to squeeze his eyes shut, which caused excessive pressure from the eyelids. As the procedure proceeded, a bubble was formed at the edge of the patient interface and became increasingly larger. In addition, wrink

[Whether laser corneal refractive surgery combined with presbyopia correction technology could treat presbyopia].

Presbyopia refers to a phenomenon in which the ability of the eye to accommodate is insufficient to meet the daily demand for proximity due to age. In modern society, more and more patients over 40 years old want to solve visual problems caused by presbyopia and refractive errors, which poses new challenges for clinical laser corneal refractive surgery, and a variety of combined presbyopia correction technologies and programs have emerged. However, whether laser corneal refractive surgery combined with presbyopia correction technology could treat presbyopia deserves clinical attention. Based o

Determination of Corneal Power after Refractive Surgery with Excimer Laser: A Concise Review.

Refractive surgery with excimer laser has been a very common surgical procedure worldwide during the last decades. Currently, patients who underwent refractive surgery years ago are older, with a growing number of them now needing cataract surgery. To establish the power of the intraocular lens to be implanted in these patients, it is essential to define the true corneal power. However, since the refractive surgery modified the anterior, but not the posterior surface of the cornea, the determination of the corneal power in this group of patients is challenging. This article reviews the differe

Mechanisms of Optical Regression Following Corneal Laser Refractive Surgery: Epithelial and Stromal Responses.

Laser vision correction is a safe and effective method of reducing spectacle dependence. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), and Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) can accurately correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Although these procedures are nearing optimization in terms of their ability to produce a desired refractive target, the long term cellular responses of the cornea to these procedures can cause patients to regress from the their ideal postoperative refraction. In many cases, refractive regression requires follow up enhancement su

A Parametric Investigation of Corneal Laser Surgery Based on the Multilayer Dynamic Photothermal Model.

Corneal laser surgery is a widely used method for the treatment of ocular myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Although it is a well-established technique, the photothermal properties of the cornea are often overlooked, causing unexpected changes in temperature during laser irradiation. Therefore, there is a need for further investigation of the temperature response of the cornea under laser irradiation. In the present work, a photothermal corneal numerical model is presented, assuming the stratification of the cornea with laser ablation in an uncoagulated layer, a coagulated layer, a dehydrati
