OBJECTIVE: To study the effective ways to restore sight and control the postoperative corneal astigmatism in eccentric penetrating keratoplasty.
METHODS: Marks were made on the meridian where the center of recipient bed was located, and at that meridian the distance between the external edge of recipient bed and the limbus (two point marking technique) was also marked. Afterward, the donor graft was cut down from a donor eye at the corresponding position and sutured on the recipient bed. This technique was performed on 23 cases with eccentric corneal ulcer and perforation, and they were follo

We performed corneal transplantation in nine microphthalmic eyes of five patients, who ranged in age from 1 to 63 months. The anteroposterior diameter of the eyes ranged from 12.5 to 16 mm. Complications from the surgery included superficial epithelial erosions in three eyes, leading to superficial scarring in one eye, glaucoma, and suture microabscesses. Despite these complications, seven of nine grafts have remained clear and vision developed in all eyes.

This report contains the results of studies designed to evaluate corneal clearing in mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI)-affected cats. Corneal buttons from affected cats were transplanted into normal cat corneas and, as controls, normal-to-normal and normal-to-affected transplants also were done. No clearing of the MPS VI graft or host beds occurred, nor was there any clouding of the normal donor or recipient corneal tissues. This assessment was made by serial clinical examinations over a 14-30 mo period and by light and electron microscopic examination of the corneal tissues at the end of the

The cornea is the outermost tissue of the eye and must be transparent to maintain good visual function. Diseases with loss of corneal transparency (ie, corneal blindness) account for 10% of blindness worldwide. The treatment of this condition is only possible with corneal transplant from corneal tissue obtained from deceased donors. More than 10 million people worldwide have corneal blindness, but the annual number of available corneal transplants is only 185 000. Accordingly, it is obvious that the quantity of available donor tissue does not meet the need, with nearly 70 candidates on the wai

Corneal transplantation is an exceedingly common and pivotal procedure in the management of corneal disease. The increasing demand for corneal transplantation underscores the importance of current guidelines and methodologies for donor tissue screening and collection. A recent FDA notice of inspectional focus on United States eye banks brought concerns about donor sepsis being a source for recipient infections and improper eye bank screening practices. However, there is evidence to suggest that septic donors do not increase the risk of transmission of infections associated with corneal grafts.

Corneal blindness is one of the major causes of reversible blindness, which can be managed with transplantation of a healthy donor cornea. It is the most successful organ transplantation in the human body as cornea is devoid of vasculature, minimizing the risk of graft rejection. The first successful transplant was performed by Zirm, and since then, corneal transplantation has seen significant evolution. It has been possible because of the relentless efforts by researchers and the increase in knowledge about corneal anatomy, improvement in instruments and advancements in technology. Keratoplas

The cornea is the most commonly transplanted tissue in medicine. The main cause of corneal graft failure is allograft rejection. The incidence of graft rejection depends on the presence of high-risk characteristics, most notably corneal neovascularization. Although corneal grafting has high success rates in the absence of these risk factors, high-risk keratoplasty is associated with low success rates because of a high incidence of immune-mediated graft rejection. To improve the survival of high-risk corneal transplantation, various preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative measures can b

PURPOSE: To report suspected donor-to-host transmission of Cryptococcus albidus after penetrating keratoplasty.
METHODS: Review of the literature and a case report of a 69-year-old woman who underwent penetrating keratoplasty for Fuchs corneal dystrophy and developed persistent corneal infiltrates 7 months postoperatively are presented.
RESULTS: Cryptococcus albidus was cultured from the original donor tissue at the time of the repeat keratoplasty.
CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates an unusual case of cryptococcal keratitis after keratoplasty suspected to be a donor-to-host transmission.

New corneal storage techniques and legislative changes have transformed conditions for corneal grafting in Sweden. Since 1995, the Swedish Corneal Surgery Society has registered the number of grafts, the size of waiting lists for surgery as well as changes in the capacity of the banks. Since 1995 the number of procedures per year has declined while the waiting list has grown. The required number of procedures is 650 rather than the 448 performed in 1999. The decline is due to a lack of donor corneas, priority accorded to other surgery, efforts to adapt contact lenses to keratoconus, and furthe
