Canine adenovirus type 1 in a fennec fox (Vulpes zerda).

A 10-mo-old female fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) with drooling suddenly died and was examined postmortem. Histologic examination of different tissue samples was performed. Vacuolar degeneration and diffuse fatty change were observed in the liver. Several diagnostic methods were used to screen for canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine influenza virus, canine coronavirus, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine adenovirus (CAdV). Only CAdV type 1 (CAdV-1) was detected in several organs (liver, lung, brain, kidney, spleen, and heart), and other viruses were not found. CAdV-1 was confirmed …

Coronavirus Infections in Companion Animals: Virology, Epidemiology, Clinical and Pathologic Features.

Coronaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses capable of causing respiratory, enteric, or systemic diseases in a variety of mammalian hosts that vary in clinical severity from subclinical to fatal. The host range and tissue tropism are largely determined by the coronaviral spike protein, which initiates cellular infection by promoting fusion of the viral and host cell membranes. Companion animal coronaviruses responsible for causing enteric infection include feline enteric coronavirus, ferret enteric coronavirus, canine enteric coronavirus, equine coronavirus, and alpaca enteric coronavirus, while c…

Molecular detection of enteric viruses in symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs in Gujarat, India.

In the recent past, canine astrovirus (CaAstV) and SARS-CoV-2 have emerged as newly identified agents contributing to canine viral gastroenteritis alongside established pathogens viz. canine coronavirus (CCoV), canine parvovirus (CPV), and canine distemper virus (CDV). To study the molecular epidemiology of these viruses in India, faecal samples (n = 168) were collected from diarrhoeic and healthy dogs and history of animals was recorded. Viruses were identified with real-time PCR using virus-specific primers. Sequencing of CaAstV and CPV positive amplicons was done for confirmation of diagnos

Retrospective analysis of possible associations between Pneumocystis spp. and five immunosuppressive viral pathogens in three wild carnivore species.

Pneumocystis spp. proliferate under immunosuppressive conditions in mammalian lungs, and several pathogens have been discussed as potential contributors to fungal proliferation. This study aimed to investigate the possible associations between Pneumocystis spp. and immunosuppressive viruses in Serbian wild mammals. A total of 108 wild carnivores - including golden jackals (Canis aureus), Eurasian badgers (Meles meles), and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) - were collected from Veliko Gradište, Stara Pazova, and Ugrinovci during the 2022/2023 hunting season. The presence of Pneumocystis spp., canine p

Epidemiology and Molecular Characterizations of Coronavirus from Companion Animals Living in Chengdu, Southwest China.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has once again caught the attention of people on the probable zoonotic transmission from animals to humans, but the role of companion animals in the coronavirus (CoV) epidemiology still remains unknown. The present study was aimed to investigate epidemiology and molecular characterizations of CoVs from companion animals in Chengdu city, Southwest China. 523 clinical samples from 393 animals were collected from one veterinary hospital between 2020 and 2021, and the presence of CoVs was detected by end-point PCR using pan-CoV assay targeting the RdRp gene. The effect of protected areas on pathogen exposure in endangered African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) populations.

Infectious diseases impact African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), but the nature and magnitude of this threat likely varies among populations according to different factors, such as the presence and prevalence of pathogens and land-use characteristics. We systematically evaluated these factors to assist development of locally appropriate strategies to mitigate disease risk. Wild dogs from 16 sites representing five unconnected populations were examined for rabies virus, canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus, canine coronavirus, and Babesia spp. exposure. Analyses revealed widespread expo

Feline infectious peritonitis epizootic caused by a recombinant coronavirus.

Cross-species transmission of coronaviruses (CoVs) poses a serious threat to both animal and human health1-3. While the large RNA genome of CoVs shows relatively low mutation rates, recombination within genera is frequently observed4-7. Companion animals are often overlooked in the transmission cycle of viral diseases; however, the close relationship of feline (FCoV) and canine CoV (CCoV) to human hCoV-229E5,8, as well as the susceptibility of these animals to SARS-CoV-29, highlight their importance in potential transmission cycles. While recombination between CCoV and FCoV of a large fragment

Canine viral vaccines at a turning point--a personal perspective.

The most important canine viral infections are distemper and CPV-2. Problems of variable CD vaccine safety and efficacy persist, but CD vaccines have greatly reduced the prevalence of disease and cases in vaccinated dogs are now rare. Canine hepatitis (ICH, CAV-1 infection) also has been controlled well by vaccines for more than 35 years and it is now rare; the sporadic cases seen in the 1990s have usually occurred in unvaccinated dogs. CAV-2 vaccines should, therefore, continue to be given since they have proved to be safe and effective, and prevent hepatitis as well as adenoviral tracheobron

SURVEILLANCE FOR ANTIBODIES AGAINST SIX CANINE VIRUSES IN WILD RACCOONS (PROCYON LOTOR) IN JAPAN.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are found worldwide. They are frequently seen in crowded inner cities as well as in forests or wooded areas, often living in proximity to humans and their pets. We examined sera from 100 wild raccoons in Japan for antibodies to six canine viruses with veterinary significance to assess their potential as reservoirs. We also aimed to understand the distribution of potentially infected wildlife. We found that 7% of samples were seropositive for canine distemper virus (CDV), 10% for canine parvovirus type 2, 2% for canine adenovirus type 1, 6% for canine adenovirus type 2,

Cross-Species Transmission and Structural Adaptive Evolution: Implications of the FCoV-23 Pandemic for the Evolution of Coronaviruses.

Two recent studies identified feline coronavirus 23 (FCoV-23), a recombinant feline coronavirus responsible for severe feline infectious peritonitis outbreaks in Cyprus. Recombination analysis revealed two breakpoints flanking a region spanning ORF1b and the spike gene, sharing 96.5% identity with the hypervirulent canine coronavirus (CCoV) strain NA/09, with phylogenetic analysis confirming that the FCoV-23 spike gene clusters with CCoV-2 while the genomic backbone clusters with FCoV-1. Structurally, conserved receptor binding domain (RBD) residues (Y549/Q551/W592) enable FCoV-23 to recognize

Establishment of reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification for rapid detection and differentiation of canine distemper virus infected and vaccinated animals.

Although widespread vaccination against canine distemper virus (CDV) has been conducted for many decades, several canine distemper outbreaks in vaccinated animals have been reported frequently. In order to detect and differentiate the wild-type and vaccine strains of the CDV from the vaccinated animals, a novel reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) method was developed. A set of four primers-two internal and two external-were designed to target the H gene for the specific detection of wild-type CDV variants. The CDV-H RT-LAMP assay rapidly amplified the target
