Hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus infections within correctional facilities in Ghana.

Previous studies have suggested high Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence in prisons in Ghana. However, this study was part of a nationally representative bio-behavioural survey and determined the prevalence of HIV and HBV among prison inmates and identified factors associated with these infections. Both biomedical and behavioural data were collected from a total of 2,443 prison inmates from 19 prison stations during 2013 in Ghana; 12 male prisons and 7 female prisons selected across the country. The national HIV screening algorithm was used for HIV testing while

[Mental health care in French correctional facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic].

OBJECTIVE: The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the 11 million people currently incarcerated worldwide is the subject of many concerns. Prisons and jails are filled with people suffering from many preexisting medical conditions increasing the risk of complications. Detainees' access to medical services is already limited and overcrowding poses a threat of massive contagion. Beyond the health impact of the crisis, the tightening of prison conditions worries. On March 16, 2020, in France, the lockdown measures have been accompanied by specific provisions for prisons: all facilities have suspen

The Practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy in US Correctional Facilities: A Nationwide Survey.

OBJECTIVES: There are little data regarding the practice of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in correctional settings in the United States. A survey was conducted to study the current practice of ECT in US prisons. We hypothesize that ECT is underutilized in the correctional setting. We also review the ethical aspects of using ECT for the treatment of mental illness in the prison population. METHODS: A 12-question survey via a Survey Monkey link was emailed to chiefs of psychiatry, or the equivalent, of each state's department of corrections. We examined the frequency of Likert-type responses,

Mental health issues among pregnant women in correctional facilities: a systematic review.

Incarceration-induced stress makes pregnant women in correctional facilities a high-risk group for mental health problems, resulting in adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. A systematic review was conducted to examine the prevalence and correlates of mental health issues among pregnant inmates. Databases searched included PubMed, Medline, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO, National Criminal Justice Reference System, Social Work Abstracts, Cochrane and Campbell libraries, which were searched for studies published in English from 1950 till July 2013. Eleven studies were included of pregnant women in correct…

Cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis prophylaxis after release from short-term correctional facilities.

BACKGROUND: There is poor adherence with tuberculosis preventive therapy among patients released from short-term correctional facilities, leading to recommendations against screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in this setting. OBJECTIVES: To assess adherence to isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) following release from short-term correctional facilities, and to estimate the cost-effectiveness of this practice. METHODS: Records of individuals referred for IPT from the Connecticut Department of Corrections to the City of Hartford Chest Clinic between January 1993 and June 1997 wer…

COVID-19 in Correctional and Detention Facilities - United States, February-April 2020.

An estimated 2.1 million U.S. adults are housed within approximately 5,000 correctional and detention facilities† on any given day (1). Many facilities face significant challenges in controlling the spread of highly infectious pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Such challenges include crowded dormitories, shared lavatories, limited medical and isolation resources, daily entry and exit of staff members and visitors, continual introduction of newly incarcerated or detained persons, and transport of incarcerated or detained persons in multiper

Active and latent tuberculosis in Brazilian correctional facilities: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) rates among prisoners are more than 20 times that of the general population in Brazil, yet there are limited data available to facilitate the development of effective interventions in this high-transmission setting. We aimed to assess risk factors for TB infection and evaluate the yield of mass screening for active disease among inmates. METHODS: We administered a questionnaire and tuberculin skin test (TST) to a population-based sample of inmates from 12 prisons in Central-West Brazil and collected sera for HIV testing and two sputum samples for smear microscopy

Optimising sexually transmitted infection screening in correctional facilities: San Francisco, 2003-2005.

OBJECTIVES: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening in correctional facilities provides access to people at high risk for STIs who might not be screened elsewhere. These screening programmes are becoming more widespread, but with decreasing funding for STI control, maximising screening impact has become increasingly important. We aimed to make recommendations about the impact of age and sex targeted screening in correctional facilities. METHODS: We compared the prevalence of chlamydia and gonorrhoea for January 2003-July 2005 among different age groups of females and males screened in …

Telemedicine implementation in Austrian correctional facilities: a qualitative interview study with prison staff.

OBJECTIVE: Austrian correctional facilities face persistent shortages of on-site physicians challenging the principle of equivalence of care. Consequently, the Ministry of Justice launched a telemedicine (TM) pilot to support primary care in correctional facilities without round-the-clock medical cover. The goal of this study was to evaluate TM alongside its implementation in order to investigate key stakeholders' experiences with TM and its integration into routine medical practice and to assess if and how health technologies such as TM can be used to improve quality of care in underserved fa…

Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in U.S. Correctional Facilities-A Review of Epidemiology and Law.

Roughly 1.8 million individuals were detained or incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities in 2022. Prior research has found that incarcerated persons are at increased risk for foodborne outbreaks. We aim to summarize recent national outbreak surveillance data and describe the nexus between disease burden and the law to inform prevention efforts. First, we describe epidemiological data for single-state correctional and all noncorrectional foodborne outbreaks during 1998-2022 that were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System…

Burden of diabetes in correctional facilities: A global systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus presents significant public health challenges worldwide. While its prevalence and management in the general population have been extensively studied, comprehensive research on diabetes among incarcerated individuals is lacking. This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of diabetes within the prison population. METHODS: The systematic review included studies reporting on the prevalence of diabetes in prison populations. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE from 2000 to November 4, 2023, wi

Relapse to smoking following release from smoke-free correctional facilities in Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Smoke-free prison policies are increasingly common, but few studies have investigated relapse to smoking after release from prison. This study investigated return to tobacco smoking and correlates of smoking at reduced levels after release among adults recently released from smoke-free prisons in Queensland, Australia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 114 people at parole offices within two months of release from prison was used. The survey measured health, social, and criminological factors related to tobacco smoking. We used logistic regression to identify factors associated
