Transcranial alternating current stimulation entrains alpha oscillations by preferential phase synchronization of fast-spiking cortical neurons to stimulation waveform.

Computational modeling and human studies suggest that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates alpha oscillations by entrainment. Yet, a direct examination of how tACS interacts with neuronal spiking activity that gives rise to the alpha oscillation in the thalamo-cortical system has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate how tACS entrains endogenous alpha oscillations in head-fixed awake ferrets. We first show that endogenous alpha oscillations in the posterior parietal cortex drive the primary visual cortex and the higher-order visual thalamus. Spike-field coherence is large

Serotonergic modulation of cortical gamma synchronization: right-lateralized psilocin effects on 40 Hz auditory steady-state responses in rats.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), particularly at 40 Hz, are promising biomarkers for psychiatric disorders involving dysregulated neural synchronization. Although most ASSR studies have focused on the glutamatergic system, the serotonergic system, specifically 5-HT2A receptor signaling, has received limited attention. Psilocin, the active metabolite of psilocybin and a known 5-HT2A receptor agonist, alters cortical oscillatory activity, but its effects on ASSR dynamics remain unclear. In this study, we examined psilocin's effects on ASSRs in eight adult male Wistar rats implanted with

Theta synchronization over occipito-temporal cortices during visual perception of body parts.

Categorical clustering in the visual system is thought to have evolved as a function of intrinsic (intra-areal) and extrinsic (interareal) connectivity and experience. In the visual system, the extrastriate body area (EBA), an occipito-temporal region, responds to full body and body part images under the organizational principle of their functional/semantic meaning. Although frequency-specific modulations of neural activity associated with perceptive and cognitive functions are increasingly attracting the interest of neurophysiologists and cognitive neuroscientists, perceiving single body part

Strengthening of synchronized activity by tetanic stimulation in cortical cultures: application of planar electrode arrays.

Rat cortical neurons were cultured on planar electrode arrays with 64 embedded electrodes. Whole-cell recording from single neurons and multisite extracellular recording were carried out simultaneously in the cultured cortical networks, and the effects of focal tetanic stimulation of the culture were studied. Both the number of action potentials and the propagation velocity of stimulated bursts were increased after tetanic stimulation. These changes were associated with a marked increase in the number of late components in the synaptic current, but with little or no increase in the early peak

Cortical synchronization of spontaneous trigeminal neuropathic pain monitored with in vivo optical imaging of calcium activity in freely moving mice.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of neuropathic lesion on cortical synchronization in processing spontaneous pain-like behavior. BACKGROUND: In vivo optical monitoring of neuronal activity may provide insightful mechanisms underlying the complexity of spontaneous pain-like behavior in freely moving animals. METHODS: We examined the synchronized pattern of the pyramidical neurons in anterior cingulate cortex during spontaneous grooming behavior using optical monitoring of Ca2+ activity. A chronic constriction injury of infraorbital nerve model was performed to induce trigeminal neuropathic

Cortical activation of neuromuscular electrical stimulation synchronized mirror neuron rehabilitation strategies: an fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: The mirror neuron system (MNS) plays a key role in the neural mechanism underlying motor learning and neural plasticity. Action observation (AO), action execution (AE), and a combination of both, known as action imitation (AI), are the most commonly used rehabilitation strategies based on MNS. It is possible to enhance the cortical activation area and amplitude by combining traditional neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with other top-down and active rehabilitation strategies based on the MNS theory. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the cortical activation patterns

Synchronous and opposite roles of the parietal and prefrontal cortices in bistable perception: a double-coil TMS-EEG study.

Bistable perception occurs when a stimulus is ambiguous and has two distinct interpretations that spontaneously alternate in observers' consciousness. Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography (EEG), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in healthy subjects and patient studies point towards a right fronto-parietal network regulating the balance between percept stabilization and the arising of alternative interpretations. However, the causal role of the interaction between parietal and prefrontal areas is not clearly understood. Using intermittent present

Different Abnormalities of Cortical Neural Synchronization Mechanisms in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment due to Alzheimer's and Chronic Kidney Diseases: An EEG Study.

This study tested whether resting state alpha rhythms (8-13 Hz) may characterize mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (ADMCI) compared with MCI due to chronic kidney disease (CKDMCI). Clinical and resting state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms from 40 ADMCI, 29 CKDMCI, and 45 cognitively normal elderly (Nold) subjects were available in a national archive. Age, gender, and education were matched in the three groups, and Mini-Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) score was paired in the ADMCI and CKDMCI groups. Delta (<4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5 Hz), alpha

Phase-Synchronized Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation-Induced Neural Oscillations Modulate Cortico-Cortical Signaling Efficacy.

Introduction: Synchronized oscillatory brain activity is considered a basis for flexible neuronal network communication. However, the causal role of inter-regional oscillatory phase relations in modulating signaling efficacy in cortical networks has not been directly demonstrated in humans so far. Aim: The current study addresses the causal role of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)-induced oscillatory cross-network phase relations in modulating signaling efficacy across human cortical networks. Methods: To this end, concurrent tACS, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an

Features of synchronous versus metachronous metastasectomy in adrenal cortical carcinoma: Analysis from the US adrenocortical carcinoma database.

BACKGROUND: Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare, aggressive cancer. We compared features of patients who underwent synchronous versus metachronous metastasectomy. METHODS: Adult patients who underwent resection for metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma from 1993 to 2014 at 13 institutions of the US adrenocortical carcinoma group were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were categorized as synchronous if they underwent metastasectomy at the index adrenalectomy or metachronous if they underwent resection after recurrence of the disease. Factors associated with overall survival were assessed by univ

Abnormal cortical neural synchronization mechanisms in quiet wakefulness are related to motor deficits, cognitive symptoms, and visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease patients: an electroencephalographic study.

Compared with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) shows peculiar clinical manifestations related to vigilance (i.e., executive cognitive deficits and visual hallucinations) that may be reflected in resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms. To test this hypothesis, clinical and resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms in age-, sex-, and education-matched PD patients (N = 136) and Alzheimer's disease patients (AD, N = 85), and healthy older participants (Nold, N = 65), were available from an international archive. Electroencephalographic sources were estimated by eLORETA

Clinical feasibility and cortical effects of synchronous mirror therapy on speech-language and upper limb motor function after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke aphasia concurrent with upper limb (UL) motor dysfunction is very common and difficult to rehabilitate. Although mirror therapy (MT) has demonstrated efficacy in treating aphasia and UL motor dysfunction separately, it has not been utilized to address both conditions simultaneously. Our study introduces a novel Synchronous Mirror Therapy (SMT) system that integrates speech-language therapy with UL motor training to evaluate its clinical feasibility, preliminary efficacy, and potential cortical mechanisms. METHOD: Fifteen patients and five therapists participated in this

Observing baby or sexual videos changes the functional synchronization between the prefrontal and parietal cortices in mothers in different postpartum periods.

During the postpartum period (PP), mothers are more sensitive to sensory stimuli related to babies and less sensitive to those with sexual significance. The processing of emotional stimuli requires synchronization among different cerebral areas. This study characterized the cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) correlation in mothers from 1½ to 3 months (PP1), 4 to 5½ months (PP2) and over 6½ months, postpartum (PP3) while observing two videos: one of a baby (BV) and one with sexual content (SV). EEGs were recorded from the frontopolar, dorsolateral and parietal cortices. All three groups rat

The nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) synchronizes sleep-wake-state-dependent cortical activity through the parabrachial nucleus (PB) in rat.

BACKGROUND: The medullary nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) and its afferents of vagus nerve have long been investigated in regulation of cortical activity and sleep promotion. However, the underlying neural circuit by which the NTS regulates electroencephalogram (EEG) and sleep remain unclear. As the NTS has a strong projection to the pontine arousal site, the parabrachial nucleus (PB), we proposed the NTS via the pontine parabrachial nucleus (PB) regulates cortical activity and sleep. METHODS: We bilaterally and directly stimulated the NTS neurons by chemogenetic approach and NTS terminals in

Synergistic neuroplasticity from synchronous Taiji Yunshou and tDCS in stroke: an fNIRS study of cortical activation and cross-subject hemodynamic brain network.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a global, major and disabling non-communicable disease. Among acute stroke survivors, 50%-80% will experience upper limb dysfunction. While Taiji Yunshou (TY) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) demonstrate individual efficacy, the neurophysiological effects and mechanisms of their synchronous application at the hemodynamic brain network level remain unclear. This study compared the transient neurophysiological effects of the isolated vs. combined interventions on cortical activation and cross-subject hemodynamic brain network topology in left-hemispheric s

Huntingtin lowering impairs the maturation and synchronized synaptic activity of human cortical neuronal networks derived from induced pluripotent stem cells.

Despite growing descriptions of wild-type Huntingtin (wt-HTT) roles in both adult brain function and, more recently, development, several clinical trials are exploring HTT-lowering approaches that target both wt-HTT and the mutant isoform (mut-HTT) responsible for Huntington's disease (HD). This non-selective targeting is based on the autosomal dominant inheritance of HD, supporting the idea that mut-HTT exerts its harmful effects through a toxic gain-of-function or a dominant-negative mechanism. However, the precise amount of wt-HTT needed for healthy neurons in adults and during development

CO2-stimulated NaCl absorption in the mouse renal cortical thick ascending limb of Henle. Evidence for synchronous Na +/H+ and Cl-/HCO3- exchange in apical plasma membranes.

These experiments evaluated salt transport processes in isolated cortical thick limbs of Henle (cTALH) obtained from mouse kidney. When the external solutions consisted of Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate (KRB), pH 7.4, and a 95% O2-5% CO2 gas phase, the spontaneous transepithelial voltage (Ve, mV, lumen-to-bath) was approximately mV; the net rate of Cl- absorption (JnetCl) was approximately 3,600 pmols s-1 cm-2; the net rate of osmotic solute absorption Jnetosm was twice JnetCl; and the net rate of total CO2 transport (JnetCO2) was indistinguishable from zero. Thus, net Cl- absorption was accompanied

Sub-second quenched-flow/X-ray microanalysis shows rapid Ca2+ mobilization from cortical stores paralleled by Ca2+ influx during synchronous exocytosis in Paramecium cells.

Though only actual local free Ca2+ concentrations, [Ca2+], rather than total Ca concentrations, [Ca], govern cellular responses, analysis of total calcium fluxes would be important to fully understand the very complex Ca2+ dynamics during cell stimulation. Using Paramecium cells we analyzed Ca2+ mobilization from cortical stores during synchronous (< or = 80 ms) exocytosis stimulation, by quenched-flow/cryofixation, freeze-substitution (modified for Ca retention) and X-ray microanalysis which registers total calcium concentrations, [Ca]. When the extracellular free calcium concentration, [Ca2+

ERD/ERS patterns reflecting sensorimotor activation and deactivation.

Oscillations in the alpha and beta band (<35 Hz) show characteristic spatiotemporal patterns during sensorimotor processing. Whereas event-related desynchronization (ERD) during motor preparation, execution, and imagery can be seen as a correlate of an activated cortical area, event-related synchronization (ERS) of frequency components between 10 and 13 Hz may represent a deactivated cortical area or inhibited cortical network, at least under certain conditions. Induced beta rhythms (13-35 Hz, beta ERS) can be found in sensorimotor areas following both voluntary movement and somatosensory stim
