Effect of early feed restriction on reproductive performance in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Reproductive performance of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) was evaluated following feed restriction (100, 85, and 70% of ad libitum) between 2 to 5 wk of age with three replicates of 12, 2-wk-old chicks per replicate. Body weight, feed conversion, and leucocyte distribution were measured during feed restriction. After experimental feed treatment, BW, age at first egg, egg production, fertility, hatchability, and embryonic mortality were evaluated from five replicates of two females and one male per treatment. Feed-restricted female chicks had lower BW from 3 to 5 wk of age, but male weight

Molecular cloning and circadian regulation of cryptochrome genes in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The circadian system is thought to have three components: input, pacemaker (internal clock), and output. Cryptochromes (Cry) are important clock genes, and recent findings indicate that these genes not only act as circadian photoreceptors but are also essential components in the negative feedback of the circadian system. As a first step toward understanding the avian circadian system, the authors tried to clone Japanese quail homologs of mammalian Crys and analyze their expression patterns in different circumstances. Partial cDNAs of qCry1 and qCry2, which are homologs of mammalian Cry1 and Cr

Histological and immunohistochemical studies of the proximal caecum and caecal tonsils of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The proximal caecum in quails consists of lymphoid and non-lymphoid structures. The caecal tonsils in the proximal part of the caecum are units of gut-associated lymphoid tissue in poultry. This study aimed to examine the histological characteristics of the proximal caecum, as well as compositions of dendritic cells (DCs) and antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the caecal tonsil of quails. Tissue sections were stained with Crossman's triple, periodic acid-Schiff, Gordon and Sweet's silver, Congo red and methyl green-pyronin dyes, as well as immunohistochemically by the streptavidin-biotin-perox

The effects of phytosterols on the sexual behavior and reproductive function in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Phytosterols (PS) are plant origin sterols naturally found in many foods and added as food additives. Since 1950, PS have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to lower serum cholesterol and inhibit cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, recent studies have found that PS act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals in laboratory animals. Therefore, this study was aimed at finding the mechanism(s) for PS effects on the sexual behaviors and reproductive functions in male Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). At 15 d of age, 30 male Japanese quails were randomly assigned to 3 gro

Biochemical parameters in Japanese quails Coturnix coturnix japonica infected with coccidia and treated with Toltrazuril.

The activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, albumin and cholesterol levels were determined in the blood serum of Japanese quails infected with coccidia and treated with Baycox (active ingredient: toltrazuril). Lower levels of AST and ALT activity were noted in treated birds regardless of the applied Baycox dose. The biochemical changes observed in the blood serum of Japanese quails point to coccidia-induced damage of digestive system tissues despite an absence of pronounced clinical symptoms. Significantly lower levels of AST a

[Lampbrush chromosomes of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): a new version of cytogenetic maps].

Avian oocyte chromosomes are transfomed into giant transcriptionally active lampbrush chromosomes (LBCs) at meiosis 1 diplotene. These chromosomes are a convenient tool for high-resulution cytogenetic analysis. Using differential staining with fluorochromes DAPI and CMA3, we have constructed detailed cytological maps for lampbrush macrochromosomes 1-5 and ZW of the Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica. We also performed a comparative analysis ofmitotic chromosomes and LBCs corresponding to them. We estimated the decondensation coefficient during LBC formation and determined the centromere

Histopathological changes of the retina and optic nerve in the albino mutant quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Histopathological changes in the retina and optic nerve in imperfect albino mutant quails with a sex-linked recessive gene were studied ontogenetically. The mutant quail showed eye enlargement 3 months after hatching. The eyes exhibited hazy corneas, lens opacities and deep anterior chambers at 18 months of age. Some ganglion cells in the retina and axons in the optic disc began to degenerate 6 months after hatching. There were many deformed or fragmented ganglion cells at 12 months of age, and axonal degeneration was observed in the optic disc. The optic disc and the retina around it became e

Post-testicular sperm maturation and identification of an epididymal protein in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The role of the avian epididymis in post-testicular development and capacitation was examined to assess whether avian spermatozoa undergo any processes similar to those characteristic of mammalian sperm development. We found no evidence of a need for quail sperm to undergo capacitation and 90% of testicular sperm could bind to a perivitelline membrane and acrosome react. However, computer-assisted sperm analysis showed that 20% of testicular sperm from the quail were capable of movement and only about 12% of the motile sperm would have a curvilinear velocity greater than the mean for sperm fro

The integrative segment of the quail Coturnix coturnix japonica. Occurrence and distribution of carbonic anhydrase and complex carbohydrates.

As part of a more extensive study into the involvement of carbonic anhydrase in avian excretory function, the occurrence and distribution of this enzyme was investigated in the quail integrative segment. The integrative segment represents, in birds, that part of the intestinal tract where ureteral urine undergoes postrenal modification to form definitive urine. To define the structural peculiarities within the intestinal epithelium, the constituent parts, namely cloaca, rectum and caecum, as well as the posterior ileum, were examined histochemically to visualise complex carbohydrates.
