BACKGROUND: Traditional auscultation, heavily dependent on the subjective judgment of physicians, can lead to variability in diagnoses. This study aimed to explore the application of machine learning algorithms for analyzing breath sounds in children with asthma, particularly those with asthma in remission and those with cough variant asthma (CVA).
METHODS: Our study collected breath sound data from 50 children with asthma (30 with asthma in remission and 20 with CVA). First, we preprocessed and extracted the breath sound data. Second, machine learning techniques were applied to objectively c

BACKGROUND: Mucus plugs have been implicated in airflow obstruction in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the role of mucus plugs in cough-variant asthma (CVA) remains understudied, and their associations with classic asthma (CA), CVA, and small airway dysfunction (SAD) are poorly defined. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mucus plugs and lung function in CA and CVA patients, and to investigate their correlations with quantitative CT-derived airway wall thickness parameters.
METHODS: A total of 109 CVA patients and 65 CA

AIM: Tracheal and chest auscultation for wheeze and transcutaneous oximetry have both been suggested as outcome measures of bronchial provocation tests in young children. The aims of this study were to compare the sensitivity of these two techniques as endpoints for methacholine challenge in young children with cough-variant asthma (CVA) and with classic asthma (CA), and to investigate whether oxygen saturation levels at the presence of wheezing differ in these two groups.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of methacholine challenge test data from 4- to 6-year-old children with CV

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Suhuang antitussive capsule (SH) is one of the commercially available traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) used clinically for cough variant asthma (CVA). Over the past decade, our laboratory has systematically investigated the pharmacological properties of SH and established its potent antitussive, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antiasthmatic activities. In preliminary screening, rosmarinic acid (RA) detected in SH showed anti-CVA activity in vitro.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and mechanism of RA, as an active component

Muscle weakness that worsens on exercise and improves on resting is the hallmark of myasthenia gravis (MG), an uncommon autoimmune illness. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, and corticosteroids are commonly used in treatment. Rituximab has been tried in refractory patients. On the contrary, asthma is characterized by a persistent inflammation of the airways and a range of symptoms, including cough-variant asthma (CVA), in which the main symptom is only cough. We describe the case of a female in her 30s who had a history of MG and had been treated with steroids and rituximab.

OBJECTIVE: Cough variant asthma (CVA) is a specific asthma phenotype, and wheezing or abnormal breathing sounds are rarely heard in CVA patients during traditional auscultation. This study aimed to use a standardized electronic stethoscope to assess whether there are differences in breath sounds between healthy children and children with CVA. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy children (476 segments of the inspiratory phase) and nineteen children with CVA (244 segments of the inspiratory phase) participated. A comparative analysis was conducted on the breath sound parameters, including the area unde

Alterations in the microbiota composition, or ecological dysbiosis, have been implicated in the development of various diseases, including allergic diseases and asthma. Examining the relationship between microbiota alterations in the host and cough variant asthma (CVA) may facilitate the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies. To elucidate the diversity and difference of microbiota across three ecological niches, we performed 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing on lung, ileum, and colon samples. We assessed the levels of interleukin-12 (IL-12) and interleukin-13 (IL-13) in guinea pig bronchoalveol

UNLABELLED: Cough variant asthma (CVA) is a common precursor of typical asthma (TA) in pediatric populations, whereas prediction of the progression from childhood CVA to TA remains difficult in clinical practice. This study aimed to screen independent risk factors for the progression of pediatric CVA to TA and construct a visualized nomogram prediction model for early risk stratification of this disease progression.
METHODS: A prospective cohort of 289 children diagnosed with CVA between June 2023 and June 2024 was followed for 12 months until June 2025. Patients were randomly divided into a

RATIONALE: Cough variant asthma (CVA) is one of the primary causes of chronic cough, significantly impacting quality of life. Although inhaled corticosteroids-long-acting beta agonists are the first-line treatment, their limitations-such as prolonged treatment duration, high relapse rates after discontinuation, and suboptimal efficacy in some patients-highlight the need to explore alternative treatment options. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with its holistic framework, syndrome differentiation-based treatment, and emphasis on preventing relapse, offers a promising strategy for complement

Background/Objectives: Cough variant asthma (CVA) is characterized by nonspecific symptoms and normal spirometric values, which makes diagnosis challenging. To diagnose CVA it is necessary to document airway hyperreactivity (AHR). The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of body plethysmography in the assessment of AHR using the methacholine challenge test (MCT). Methods: In CVA-suspected patients, a bronchodilation test (BDT), an MCT with spirometry, and body plethysmography were performed. The MCT was considered positive if there was a 20% decrease in forced expiratory volum

UNLABELLED: In the post-acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) period, patients with asthma had a significantly higher risk of cough than patients without a history of asthma. In particular, cases with persistent cough were increased during the Omicron variant epidemic. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of ensitrelvir for the treatment of cough associated with COVID-19 Omicron variants in patients with asthma. This follows the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement. A total of 223 patients were registered in this study: 121 patients chose ensit
