Genetic counselors describe their professional identity as who they are (personal characteristics and attributes), what they do (actions and skills), and what they possess (training and knowledge). A shared multidimensional perspective highlights the transferability of their skills across diverse roles and settings. This qualitative study aimed to identify factors that influence genetic counselors' perceptions and formation of their professional identities. Using Social Identity Theory as a theoretical framework, semi-structured recorded interviews were conducted with 50 genetic counselors who

Patient advocacy organizations (PAOs) and genetic counseling have expanded in tandem with the growth of precision medicine. Genetic counseling and PAOs share important goals related to advancing genomic medicine, creating novel possibilities for synergistic collaboration, especially as the sheer number of PAOs focused on genetic conditions presents new options for genetic counselor education. While patient advocacy has long been part of genetic counseling education, there are few published reports or studies focused on how advocacy is incorporated into genetic counseling graduate training. The ability to identify students at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis in school settings is crucial for enabling appropriate referral to a clinician and positive therapeutic results. The aim of this study was to examine school counselors' recognition of the diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations for students at UHR for psychosis. In total, 132 school counselors completed surveys, including questions relating to a vignette about a student at UHR for psychosis. In total, 12.4% of the sample provided the correct diagnosis, much lower than that for other schizophrenia spectrum disor

Counselor turnover is a significant problem facing substance abuse treatment agencies. Understanding the role of organizational culture in predicting burnout and turnover intention may yield important information on how to address turnover in treatment organizations. Using data collected from 817 counselors employed in a national sample of 253 therapeutic communities (TCs), structural equation modeling was used to estimate the associations between emotional exhaustion, turnover intention, and three measures of organizational culture: centralized decision making, distributive justice, and proce

Empathy, the ability to understand and communicate another's experience to them, positively affects genetic counseling processes and outcomes. Genetic counseling, a specialty healthcare profession, provides education and support for those impacted by genetic disease; thus, empathy is critical. Limited studies have explored patients' perceptions of genetic counselor (GC) empathy responses. This study investigated the types of GC responses proxy patients perceived as most empathic and why. Female MTurk workers (n = 198) completed a survey containing two hypothetical genetic counseling scenarios

Should counselors with interpersonal trauma histories work with similarly traumatized clients? How does the work affect them? Current research is inconsistent. This study examines 101 sexual assault and domestic violence counselors' recalled motivations for trauma work, their reported subjective personal changes, and their secondary and vicarious trauma symptoms and burnout. Counselors motivated by interpersonal trauma report both more symptoms and positive changes (including dealing with their own trauma). Those seeking personal meaning report becoming more hypervigilant and self-isolating. T

Black women present with distinct mental health concerns that necessitate culturally responsive therapeutic intervention. The authors put forth therapeutic sistah circles as a culturally responsive group intervention for enhancing Black women's mental health. Drawing on theories and research from Black feminism, group psychotherapy, and Black feminist communication studies, the authors describe the distinguishing features of a therapeutic sistah circle and offer recommendations for facilitation across counseling contexts.

Mental health disorders have increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety rates rose 25-27 % in the first year of the pandemic in 2020. The recent rise has highlighted the necessity of mental health professionals, including online counsellors, to provide quick support. Online therapy in India has become institutionalized since 2015. Online counselling's emotionally demanding nature may contribute to their stress, which may influence their turnover intention. The study used quantitative methods to assess online counsellors' career co

48 clients in a rehabilitation center viewed two 12-min, videotapes each, one depicting a counselor high in social influence and the other one of low influence. They then rated the counselors on the Counselor Rating Form and the Empathy subscale of the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory. Black subjects and subjects at lower educational levels rated the counselor of low social influence significantly higher than did whites and better educated subjects on all measures. White subjects and subjects at higher educational levels rated the counselor of high social influence significantly higher o

The United States has the highest rate of incarceration of any country and as the incarcerated population grows, health disparities increase. Genetic counseling provides essential healthcare that reduces health disparities through education regarding preventative screening and inherited health risks. Although genetic counselors (GCs) are involved in the care of incarcerated patients, there is limited research on the perspective of GCs working with this population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of GCs working with incarcerated patients and explore opportun

Trauma-informed practice (TIP) is an emerging model of care that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and emphasizes both physical and psychological safety for consumer and provider. It is being increasingly integrated into models of healthcare delivery, organizational policies, and practices, and has been shown to improve clinical interactions, increase treatment adherence, and improve healthcare outcomes. However, to date, TIP has not yet been systematically integrated into genetic counseling training and practice. In this study, using the RISE2 Genomics reporting standard, we presen

In this study, the authors explored HIV test counselors' perceptions of and experiences working with "difficult" and "good" clients in alternative HIV testing sites. Trained interviewers made field observations and conducted sixteen 60-minute, semistructured interviews with counselors. Counselors reported 7 main characteristics of difficult clients: (1) uncooperative, (2) mean, (3) inebriated, (4) threatening, (5) "crazy," (6) sexually inappropriate, and (7) aesthetically unappealing/overly appealing. They also identified 3 main characteristics of good clients: (1) communicative, (2) responsiv

This study examined the prevalence of disordered gambling in substance abuse counselors. Participants (N = 328) completed an anonymous self-report survey assessing lifetime disordered gambling, past two-month gambling behavior, and current mental and physical health. The lifetime prevalence rates of pathological and problem gambling in this sample (11.9% and 6.4%, respectively) were higher than rates reported in general population surveys. Poorer physical health was associated with pathological gambling, but mental health was not. These results suggest that substance abuse counselors may benef

INTRODUCTION: Community programs to teach nonmedical laypeople how to recognize an opioid overdose and effectively resuscitate the victim using naloxone have proliferated recently as a significant component of harm-reduction efforts. Although many such programs target laypeople like first responders or friends and family members of people who use drugs, there are currently no programs that specifically target addiction counselors, despite their work with a client population at high risk of an opioid overdose.
METHODS: The four-hour curriculum designed by the authors covered opioid agonist and

In this study, we investigated how bearing witness to clients' resilience processes during treatment impacts the personal and professional lives of counselors who work with child and youth victims of interpersonal trauma. We used a qualitative instrumental multiple-case study design and thematic analysis to explore the research question. The participants indicated that they experienced an increased sense of hope and optimism, and were inspired by the strengths of their clients while working with this population. As the participants reflected on the challenges that their clients faced, the part

Values of 42 Alaska Native clients, 30 Alaska Native counselors, and 19 non-Native counselors at seven Indian Health Service inpatient alcoholism treatment programs in Alaska are compared. Using the Rokeach Value Survey, differences were revealed on six instrumental values and six terminal values. The primary value disparities were between the Alaska Native groups and non-Native counselors. Specifically, both Alaska Native groups placed greater importance on values that were other-focused while the non-Native counselors placed more importance on values that were self-focused. Minor differences
