Widespread endocrine-disrupting pollutant alters male courtship behavior in a livebearing fish.

Sexual selection is a potent evolutionary force shaping both precopulatory courtship behavior and postcopulatory sperm traits, with male reproductive effort often adjusted to social and mating context. Endocrine-disrupting contaminants are predicted to alter how males allocate reproductive effort, yet their behavioral effects across different mating contexts remain poorly understood. We examined whether exposure to 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2; 43 to 1,100 ng/L), a synthetic estrogen used in the contraceptive pill that enters aquatic systems via wastewater effluent, alters male courtship behavior

Courtship display behavior influences tail myology in Centrocercus minimus (Gunnison sage-grouse).

A variety of bird species engage in complicated, elaborate courtship displays to impress potential mates. Such displays include wing flaring, aerial acrobatics, choreographed dances, and tail fanning. Though these behaviors are often well studied, the underlying musculature facilitating them is poorly understood. Exemplars of unique avian courtship behaviors include species of the North American sage-grouse (Centrocercus). Each spring, males gather in leks where they perform courtship displays which incorporate species-specific sound production, nape feather movement, and importantly, the rais

Visual feedback neurons fine-tune Drosophila male courtship via GABA-mediated inhibition.

Many species of animals use vision to regulate their social behaviors. However, the molecular and circuit mechanisms underlying visually guided social interactions remain largely unknown. Here, we show that the Drosophila ortholog of the human GABAA-receptor-associated protein (GABARAP) is required in a class of visual feedback neurons, lamina tangential (Lat) cells, to fine-tune male courtship. GABARAP is a ubiquitin-like protein that maintains cell-surface levels of GABAA receptors. We demonstrate that knocking down GABARAP or GABAAreceptors in Lat neurons or hyperactivating them induces mal

Fruitless and doublesex coordinate to generate male-specific neurons that can initiate courtship.

Biologists postulate that sexual dimorphism in the brain underlies gender differences in behavior, yet direct evidence for this has been sparse. We identified a male-specific, fruitless (fru)/doublesex (dsx)-coexpressing neuronal cluster, P1, in Drosophila. The artificial induction of a P1 clone in females effectively provokes male-typical behavior in such females even when the other parts of the brain are not masculinized. P1, located in the dorsal posterior brain near the mushroom body, is composed of 20 interneurons, each of which has a primary transversal neurite with extensive ramificatio

Gustatory receptors interact with the serotonin pathway to regulate silkmoth stereotyped courtship behavior.

BACKGROUND: Gustatory receptors (GRs) are known to mediate responses to various chemical stimuli including sugars and bitter compounds and sex pheromones. Although numerous types of GRs have been identified across insect species, the physiological roles of most GRs remain largely unknown. The silkworm, Bombyx mori, is representative of the order Lepidoptera, which includes over 70% of agriculturally important pest species. A notable feature of GRs in B. mori is that most GRs are organized in clusters, making them highly suitable for large-scale genetic studies. RESULTS: Here we developed a tr

An automatic system for recognizing fly courtship patterns via an image processing method.

Fruit fly courtship behaviors composed of a series of actions have always been an important model for behavioral research. While most related studies have focused only on total courtship behaviors, specific courtship elements have often been underestimated. Identifying these courtship element details is extremely labor intensive and would largely benefit from an automatic recognition system. To address this issue, in this study, we established a vision-based fly courtship behavior recognition system. The system based on the proposed image processing methods can precisely distinguish body parts

Drosophila females receive male substrate-borne signals through specific leg neurons during courtship.

Substrate-borne vibratory signals are thought to be one of the most ancient and taxonomically widespread communication signals among animal species, including Drosophila flies.1-9 During courtship, the male Drosophila abdomen tremulates (as defined in Busnel et al.10) to generate vibrations in the courting substrate.8,9 These vibrations coincide with nearby females becoming immobile, a behavior that facilitates mounting and copulation.8,11-13 It was unknown how the Drosophila female detects these substrate-borne vibratory signals. Here, we confirm that the immobility response of the female to

Stories of spinster with various faces: from courtship rejection to tumor metastasis rejection.

The Drosophila spinster (spin) mutant was isolated as a mutant that showed abnormal morphology and function in the nervous system. The spin defect induces neural degeneration similar to human lysosomal storage diseases. Various studies have shown that Spin proteins are localized in lysosomes and participate in the late stages of the autophagic process. Vertebrates have three spinster orthologs, Spns1, Spns2, and Spns3. A defect in Spns1 caused a short lifespan with aberrant lysosomal function in zebrafish. Spns2 was originally isolated as the gene responsible for abnormal heart development and

Do circadian genes and ambient temperature affect substrate-borne signalling during Drosophila courtship?

Courtship vibratory signals can be air-borne or substrate-borne. They convey distinct and species-specific information from one individual to its prospective partner. Here, we study the substrate-borne vibratory signals generated by the abdominal quivers of the Drosophila male during courtship; these vibrations travel through the ground towards courted females and coincide with female immobility. It is not known which physical parameters of the vibrations encode the information that is received by the females and induces them to pause. We examined the intervals between each vibratory pulse, a

Female contact activates male-specific interneurons that trigger stereotypic courtship behavior in Drosophila.

We determined the cellular substrate for male courtship behavior by quasinatural and artificial stimulation of brain neurons. Activation of fruitless (fru)-expressing neurons via stimulation of thermosensitive dTrpA1 channels induced an entire series of courtship acts in male Drosophila placed alone without any courting target. By reducing the number of neurons expressing dTrpA1 by MARCM, we demonstrated that the initiation of courtship behavior is significantly correlated with the activation of the transmidline P1 interneurons, the descending P2b interneurons, or both, indicating that these i

Courtship and mating behaviour of interspecific Nasonia hybrids (Hymenoptera, Pteromalidae): a grandfather effect.

Nasonia courtship behaviour includes easily quantifiable, stereotyped components. We analysed displays of N. vitripennis x N. longicornis hybrid males. Most of them performed well-organised displays that were intermediate between the parental species. However, in both reciprocal crosses, a significant bias towards the behaviour of the grandpaternal species was observed. Possible explanations for this effect are a biased recovery of genotypes, either due to nucleo-cytoplasmic interaction or non-mendelian transmission, or differential activation of genes in hybrid females. This study is a first

Role of dopamine signaling in male courtship suppression induced by confinement stress in Drosophila.

Stress disturbs physiological and psychological homeostasis across species. In mammals, stress reduces male courtship motivation, but the underlying neuronal mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we establish a Drosophila model in which confinement to a small space without complete immobilization-termed small-space (SS) stress-suppresses male courtship behavior. Because stress modulates dopamine signaling in both vertebrates and invertebrates, we examined its role in SS-stress-induced courtship suppression. Pharmacological inhibition and genetic manipulations revealed that dopamine synthe

Effect of genes, social experience, and their interaction on the courtship behaviour of transgenic Drosophila males.

Behaviour depends (a) on genes that specify the neural and non-neural elements involved in the perception of and responses to sensory stimuli and (b) on experience that can modulate the fine development of these elements. We exposed transgenic and control Drosophila melanogaster males, and their hybrids, to male siblings during adult development and measured the contribution of genes and of experience to their courtship behaviour. The transgene CheB42a specifically targets male gustatory sensillae and alters the perception of male inhibitory pheromones which leads to frequent male-male interac

Functional coupling of acoustic and chemical signals in the courtship behaviour of the male Drosophila melanogaster.

During courtship, the male Drosophila melanogaster sends signals to the female through two major sensory channels: chemical and acoustic. These signals are involved in the stimulation of the female to accept copulation. In order to determine the respective importance in the courtship of these signals, their production was controlled using genetical and surgical techniques. Males deprived of the ability to emit both signals are unable to mate, demonstrating that other (e.g. visual or tactile) signals are not sufficient to stimulate the female. If either acoustic or chemical signals are lacking,

Courtship behaviour in the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis, the New World vector of visceral leishmaniasis.

Courtship behaviour in Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) was examined to determine the sequence of behaviours that occur prior to copulation. Courtship consisted of a series of male and female touching and wing-flapping behaviours, with males performing a greater variety of wing-flapping behaviours than previously described. Occurrence of male approach-flapping, semi-circling and female stationary-flapping were all predictors of eventual copulation, and may coincide with the dispersal of pheromones or the production of auditory signals important to courtship. Touching

Hormones and midbrain mediation of courtship behavior in the male ring dove (Streptopelia risoria).

The nucleus intercollicularis (ICo) region of the midbrain has been shown to concentrate testosterone and to be involved in the neural control of avian vocal behavior. The present study investigated the possible role of the ICo region in the androgen-dependent courtship behavior of male ring doves, with the use of radio-frequency lesion and intracranial hormone-implant techniques. In the first experiment, bilateral lesions in the ICo region reduced nest-cooing but did not specifically alter other courtship behavior of males tested with stimulus females. No effect on gonadal state could be disc

When laterality fails: sublethal cyclosporin-A exposure impairs courtship and reproduction in Ostrinia furnacalis.

Lateralized courtship and mating behaviors in the Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)) play a key role in reproductive performance, yet their vulnerability to sublethal stressors remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of sublethal cyclosporin A (CsA) exposure on lateralized courtship behavior and reproductive performance. Adult males and females were assigned to 4 mating groups-unexposed males × exposed females, exposed males × unexposed females, exposed males × exposed females, and unexposed males × unexposed females and were fed diets containing sublethal con

Characterization of copulatory courtship song in the Old World sand fly species Phlebotomus argentipes.

Acoustic communication in the form of courtship and mating songs are often involved in reproductive isolation between species of Diptera, such as Drosophila, mosquitoes and sand flies. The patterns of courtship songs in New World sand fly species evolve quickly under sexual selection; and therefore, represent an important trait that can be used as a marker to study the evolution of species complexes and may aid identification of sibling species with a complex. The ability to identify vector species within species complexes is of critical importance for effective and efficient vector control pr

Pinealectomy, melatonin, and courtship behavior in male red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis).

Activation of courtship behavior in male red-sided garter snakes is independent of androgens. Only exposure to extended periods of low temperature with subsequent warming stimulates courtship in males. The pineal gland is thought to transduce temperature as well as photoperiodic information in reptiles. Therefore, we explored the relationship of the pineal and melatonin to sexual behavior in this species. Pinealectomy of male garter snakes disrupted sexual behavior upon emergence from a 17-week period of low temperature in approximately 60% of treated individuals in each of the 3 years of stud

Pre-Courtship Behavior of Proholopterus chilensis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in a Nothofagus obliqua (Nothofagaceae) Forest.

The pre-courtship behavior of Proholopterus chilensis on Nothofagus obliqua trees was recorded for the first time, documenting a putative female "calling" behavior and the consequent male "oriented search," enabling the description of behavioral units, sequences, frequencies, and degrees of stereotypy. Post-resting activity in both sexes began with walking and grooming during the first hour of the scotophase, following a period of daytime inactivity. Subsequently, females extended their ovipositor both horizontally and vertically, alternating between contact with the tree substrate and, simult
