Experience with dissection of the cavernous sinus and the temporal bone is essential for training in skull base surgery, but the opportunities for cadaver dissection are very limited. A modification of a commercially available prototype three-dimensional (3D) skull base model, made by a selective laser sintering method and incorporating surface details and inner bony structures such as the inner ear structures and air cells, is proposed to include artificial dura mater, cranial nerves, venous sinuses, and the internal carotid artery for such surgical training. The transpetrosal approach and ep

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Disorders of the equine sphenopalatine sinus, including empyema and neoplasia, have been reported to cause damage to cranial nerves II and V. However, the clinical anatomy of these sinuses is not well described in horses.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the sphenopalatine sinuses in a range of equidae and, in particular, to examine the relationship of these sinuses to adjacent major nerves and vessels.
METHODS: The anatomy of the sphenoidal and palatine paranasal sinuses was examined in 16 equidae, primarily using transverse skull sections. Relevant structu

The purpose of this study was to describe the computed tomographic (CT) anatomy of normal donkey head cavities to be used as a basis for interpretation of CT images of donkey. Six adult donkeys' heads of undetermined sex were used in this study. The donkey heads were divided into three regions-nasal, orbital, and cranial-to show the morphology of the following cavities: nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, orbital cavity, oral cavity, pharyngeal cavity, especially the guttural pouch, cranial cavity and temporomandibular joint. The donkey head had six pairs of sinuses: three paranasal (the frontal,

Intentional cranial deformations (ICD) have been observed worldwide but are especially prevalent in preColombian cultures. The purpose of this study was to assess the consequences of ICD on three cranial cavities (intracranial cavity, orbits, and maxillary sinuses) and on cranial vault thickness, in order to screen for morphological changes due to the external constraints exerted by the deformation device. We acquired CT-scans for 39 deformed and 19 control skulls. We studied the thickness of the skull vault using qualitative and quantitative methods. We computed the volumes of the orbits, of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mucocoele of the paranasal sinuses falls within the scope of interest for neurosurgery when erosion of the sinus wall and the osseous structures of the skull base develops and the lesion extends towards the cranial cavity, the orbit, the cavernous sinus or the sella turcica. The pa-per aims to present the method of treatment of extensive mucocoele which is used in our clinic.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We treated 7 patients (2 women and 5 men; age range: 27-68 years). Mucopyocoele was diagnosed in two cases, and mucocoele in the other five. In 5 cases, extension of the muco

Through a study of some syndromes of intra-cranial high and low pressure, the authors try to find out the relations between the intra-cranial stresses and the development of frontal sinuses. They account for the choice of frontal sinuses and the various factors determining this pneumatization. They study the morphology of the frontal sinuses in 20 cases of old and chronic hydrocephaly, in 13 cases of oxycephaly with a late diagnosis, and in 20 cases of adults suffering with infantile cerebral hemiatrophy. They show that in these syndromes, the development of frontal sinuses is an inverse ratio

Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO) is characterized by abnormal bone, hair, and tooth morphology. However, the reported craniofacial abnormalities are not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to compare the craniofacial parameters of 25 subjects affected with TDO (A) with those of 15 unaffected relatives (U). Standardized lateral cephalograms were traced and digitized. Each subject's data were compared by age and sex to cephalometric standards (Bolton, Behrents); severity was scored by standard deviations from the standard mean, and then grouped into A vs. U. All cephalograms wer

The paranasal sinus cancers comprise about 10% of all head and neck neoplasms. There are 80% of SCC among them. Paranasal sinus cancer is difficult to treat with surgery due to the anatomic integration of sinuses into the cranial base. Suborbital approach allows to simultaneous resection of the tumor from sinuses and anterior cranial fossa. The excision of the nasofrontal bone lamella gives a chance to orbital decompression and optic nerve decompression as well and opening the anterior cranial fossa through posterior wall of the frontal sinus. The goal of the study was to present cases showing

The aim of this study was to investigate ten patients who underwent surgery for mucoceles of the frontal sinus. Bicoronal direct access was required by the localization of the mucocele limited to the frontal sinuses, its extension to the orbit and/or the brain and because of the anatomy of the frontal sinuses (large size, lateral horn...) as evidenced at imaging. Direct access to the frontal sinuses was achieved in 9 patients allowing marsupialization associated with repermeabilization of the naso-frontal duct (7 cases) or exeresis of the mucocele by cranialization (2 cases). Mean follow-up is

INTRODUCTION: At the present time it is well established that cranial magnetic resonance (MR) is the imaging technique of choice for diagnosis of thrombosis of the dural sinuses. However, few studies have been done to evaluate its role in follow-up in this cerebrovascular disorder.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the alterations in resonance signal in follow-up of patients with thrombosis of the dural sinuses and the clinical correlation of this.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical histories of 12 patients diagnosed on cranial MR as having thrombosis of the dural sinuses; 8 cases were also s

This study was conducted to present a comprehensive and integrative computed tomography (CT) - anatomical cross sections atlas of skull, volumetric properties of the paranasal sinuses, and morphometric values for surface cranial nerves in the adult Arabian horse. Ten heads of Arabian horse breed were used. The different structures in the nasal, oral and cranial cavities were determined and labelled in the anatomical sections and their corresponding CT scan images. Three paranasal sinuses namely maxillary, conchofrontal and sphenopalatine sinuses were identified in the CT scan images. The cauda

The association of sinusitis with ocular motility disorders is a seductive theory due to their close anatomical vicinity. Typically, sinusitis can influence ocular motility by affecting single muscles or a combination of muscles and/or cranial nerves due to a local inflammatory tissue reaction. Although rare, sinusitis has been suggested at least as a cause for superior-branch oculomotor palsy. We report a case of progressive, isolated, third-cranial-nerve palsy caused by an aneurysm of the posterior-communicating artery that initially was thought to be related to pansinusitis.

Opening the frontal sinuses is a common occurrence during neurosurgical procedures involving the anterior cranial base. Obliteration of the exposed sinuses is usually accomplished packing them with various materials and/or covering them with an anteriorly-based pericranial flap. In the absence of more extensive cranial base defects, the flap only needs to be wrapped around the sinus and secured against its posterior wall. We describe the technique for and the results of using titanium miniplates and screws to secure the pericranial flap to the inner surface of the frontal bone. In 10 patients

A 19-year-old male patient presented with a midline facial, nose, and forehead hard and bony swelling associated with hypertelorism. Neuroimaging revealed a massive tumor involving the anterior cranial fossa floor, which had occupied and enlarged all paranasal air sinuses, and displaced the orbits outwards and the frontal lobes of the brain superiorly. A basal transcranial route was used for radical resection of the massive and vascular tumor. Histological examination confirmed an aneurysmal bone cyst. Such tumors only rarely involve the cranial bones or paranasal air sinuses.

The present study describes the presence of os inca, incomplete metopic suture with asymmetrical frontal sinuses and multiple sutural deformities in a skull bone. Os inca has been reported to be associated with other cranial deformities. However, the present study, besides reporting os inca and associated sutural abnormalities, also highlights the presence of an unusual pterion in such cases. The aim is to provide anatomical insight into the morphology of sutures, frontal sinuses and associated cranial abnormalities. These are important findings which may be relevant for surgeons and radiologi

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of falcine and occipital sinuses is rare and its natural course has not been reported.
CASE REPORTS: Two patients with persistent falcine and occipital sinuses are described. Both patients had straight sinuses. In one, both the transverse and sigmoid sinuses were hypoplastic and the patient had an acquired Chiari I malformation. The other patient had no other venous anomalies and had a normal posterior cranial fossa.
CONCLUSION: The coexistence of falcine and occipital sinuses can lead to an acquired Chiari I malformation. These cases suggest the importance of che

Patients with multisutural craniosynostosis can develop anomalous venous connections between the intracranial sinuses and cutaneous venous system through enlarged emissary veins. Cranial vault remodeling in this subset of patients carries the risk of massive intraoperative blood loss and/or occlusion of collateral draining veins leading to intracranial venous hypertension and raised intracranial pressure, increasing the morbidity of cranial expansion. The authors report the use of spring-mediated expansion as a technique for cranial reconstruction in which the collateral intracranial venous dr
