BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver fibrosis is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins, including collagen, which occurs in most types of chronic liver diseases. Advanced liver fibrosis results in cirrhosis, liver failure, and portal hypertension. Activated hepatic perivascular stellate cells, portal fibroblasts, and myofibroblasts of bone marrow origin have been identified as major collagen-producing cells in the injured liver. These cells are activated by fibrogenic cytokines, such as TGF-β1. The inhibition of TGF-β1 function or synthesis is a major target for the development of

Orostachys japonicus has traditionally been used as a food product and a fork medicine in Asia to treat various diseases. Angiogenesis is a critical process that contributes to various chronic diseases via excessive delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Common anti-angiogenic drugs have serious problems related to high costs and side effects; thus, natural products with low costs and no cytotoxicity have garnered increasing interest. In this study, we evaluated and compared the anti-angiogenic effects and phenolic compound contents between wild (WOEs) and cultivated O. japonicus extracts (COEs) pr

Islands constitute excellent models to disentangle the effect of different biotic and abiotic factors generating plant size variation. However, plant size variation in terrestrial habitat islands remains unexplored. This is a meaningful gap as these insular systems are expected to have both similarities (e.g. isolation defined by habitat contrast and permeability against the surrounding matrix) as well as differences (e.g. large herbivores' presence). Here, we address this gap by examining size-related plant trait differences between specialist species of terrestrial habitat islands (quartz is

Ninety-five wild forage plants (belonging to 22 species of 18 families) and their corresponding rhizosphere soil samples were collected from wastelands of a large-scale abandoned Hg mining region for total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) analysis. The forage plant communities on the wastelands were dominated by the Asteraceae, Crassulaceae, and Polygonaceae families. The THg and MeHg concentrations in the forage plants varied widely and were in the range of 0.10 to 13 mg/kg and 0.19 to 23 μg/kg, respectively. Shoots of Aster ageratoides showed the highest average THg concentration of 12 ± 1.

INTRODUCTION: Rhodiola is one of the few genera in Crassulaceae that includes both dioecious and hermaphroditic species. However, previous studies have mainly relied on representative individuals or limited plastid fragments, which may not fully resolve evolutionary relationships within the genus, especially lineage divergence associated with sexual-system differentiation.
METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the complete chloroplast genomes of 89 newly sequenced samples representing 35 Rhodiola species. A batch-processing pipeline was used to integrate raw-read processing, automated chloropla

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: In traditional Mexican medicine, Echeveria gibbiflora DC has been used as a vaginal post-coital rinse to prevent pregnancy. The aqueous crude extract (OBACE) induces sperm immobilization/agglutination and a hypotonic-like effect, likely attributed to the high concentration of calcium bis-(hydrogen-1-malate) hexahydrate [Ca2+ (C4H5O5)2•6H2O]. Likewise, OBACE impedes the increase of [Ca2+]i during capacitation.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Evaluate the effect of OBACE on sperm energy metabolism and the underlying mechanism of action on sperm-specific channel.
