Neuroimaging predictors of creativity in healthy adults.

Neuroimaging has revealed numerous neural predictors of individual differences in creativity; however, with most of these identified in only one study, sometimes involving very small samples, their reliability is uncertain. To contribute to a convergent cognitive neuroscience of creativity, we conducted a pre-registered conceptual replication and extension study in which we assessed previously reported predictors of creativity using a multimodal approach, incorporating volumetric, white matter, and functional connectivity neuroimaging data. We assessed sets of pre-registered predictors against

The poet syndrome: opiates, psychosis and creativity.

For some people, heroin is a self-medicating tool used to control innate psychic sensitivity. The habitual use of heroin provides the sensitive addict with a definition of consciousness by containment, psychic buffering, and psychic marking. This article is an examination of the political and social history of opiates, opiates as antipsychotics, "drug of choice" as a determinant of self-medication, and the connection between creativity, spirituality, psychosis and addiction. Using clinical observation, the article explores the poet syndrome hypothesis and offers direction for an alternative dr

Increased creative thinking in narcolepsy.

Some studies suggest a link between creativity and rapid eye movement sleep. Narcolepsy is characterized by falling asleep directly into rapid eye movement sleep, states of dissociated wakefulness and rapid eye movement sleep (cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and lucid dreaming) and a high dream recall frequency. Lucid dreaming (the awareness of dreaming while dreaming) has been correlated with creativity. Given their life-long privileged access to rapid eye movement sleep and dreams, we hypothesized that subjects with narcoleps

Proteasome: a Nanomachinery of Creative Destruction.

In the middle of the 20th century, it was postulated that degradation of intracellular proteins is a stochastic process. More than fifty years of intense studies have finally proven that protein degradation is a very complex and tightly regulated in time and space process that plays an incredibly important role in the vast majority of metabolic pathways. Degradation of more than a half of intracellular proteins is controlled by a hierarchically aligned and evolutionarily perfect system consisting of many components, the main ones being ubiquitin ligases and proteasomes, together referred to as

Reclaim your creative confidence.

Most people are born creative. But over time, a lot of us learn to stifle those impulses. We become warier of judgment, more cautious more analytical. The world seems to divide into "creatives" and "noncreatives," and too many people resign themselves to the latter category. And yet we know that creativity is essential to success in any discipline or industry. The good news, according to authors Tom Kelley and David Kelley of IDEO, is that we all can rediscover our creative confidence. The trick is to overcome the four big fears that hold most of us back: fear of the messy unknown, fear of jud

Orpheus and Eurydice: a creative agony.

The archaic story of the Thracian musician Orpheus and his bride Eurydice is heard first as an ancient myth of marriage and death, wedding and separation. The mixture of expectation and dread in its sentiments is sounded still today in the contemporary wedding songs and funeral laments of the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Similar sequences of engagement and withdrawal, ascent and descent, change and metamorphosis are found in the adventures and vicissitudes of other mythic figures. Its premise of the soul's transmigration and its promise of psychic transformation inspired the religious rumina

Creatively tiding over the crisis.

BACKGROUND: A patient with a retained intraocular metallic foreign body post-trauma was taken up for vitrectomy and intraocular foreign body removal. Unfortunately, the intraocular magnet was not available at the moment on the table! How a little bit of creativity and innovative thought helped us tide over this crisis is the content of this video. PURPOSE: To demonstrate magnetization of a metallic surgical instrument for temporary use in the event of unavailability of the intraocular magnet for intraocular foreign body removal. SYNOPSIS: A ferromagnetic substance can be magnetized temporari

Build the co-creative enterprise.

UNLABELLED: These days more companies are inviting customers to help them design products. Now a few are taking things further and including their other stakeholders--employees, suppliers, distributors, and even regulators--in "co-creation" efforts, too. By focusing on improving the experiences of everyone involved, such firms are achieving breakthrough insights, lower costs, new revenues, and new business models. Consider how this worked at France's La Poste, which wanted to expand package delivery and banking services in light of a decline in its mail business. La Poste had three obstacles:

Brain Structural Signatures and Functional Networks in Creativity.

Creativity constitutes an essential component of higher-order cognitive abilities in humans. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigations have increasingly delineated the neural correlates underlying creative processes. Nevertheless, the structural architecture of the brain provides the foundational substrate for these functions, and variations in morphology can substantially influence cognitive capabilities. To date, systematic reviews and quantitative syntheses specifically targeting the structural correlates of creativity remain sparse. Consequently, this study utilized activ

Creativity and Bipolar Disorder: A Shared Genetic Vulnerability.

Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings between mania and depression. Despite fitness costs associated with increased mortality and significant impairment, bipolar disorder has persisted in the population with a high heritability and a stable prevalence. Creativity and other positive traits have repeatedly been associated with the bipolar spectrum, particularly among unaffected first-degree relatives and those with milder expressions of bipolar traits. This suggests a model in which large doses of risk variants cause illness, but mild to moderate doses

Creativity related to dopaminergic treatment: A multicenter study.

Impulse control disorder (ICD), including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive shopping has been linked to dopaminergic treatment, especially treatment with dopamine agonists (DAs). However, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may experience enhanced creativity during DA therapy, often manifesting as newfound artistic pursuits. Though ICD is very well recognized in the literature, enhanced creativity remains underreported, probably because, unlike ICD, enhanced creativity is often positive and rarely disruptive for patients and relatives. We studied 21 patients (20 patients

Verbal creativity in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Emergence of visual and musical creativity in the setting of neurologic disease has been reported in patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), also called semantic dementia (SD). It is hypothesized that loss of left anterior frontotemporal function facilitates activity of the right posterior hemispheric structures, leading to de novo creativity observed in visual artistic representation. We describe creativity in the verbal domain, for the first time, in three patients with svPPA. Clinical presentations are carefully described in three svPPA patients exhibiting verbal

Creativity and imagination in autism and Asperger syndrome.

Three studies are reported that address the often described impoverished creativity in autism. Using the Torrance Creativity Tests, Experiment 1 found that children with autism and Asperger syndrome (AS) showed impairments. Experiment 2 tested two explanations of these results: the executive dysfunction and the imagination deficit hypotheses. Results supported both hypotheses. Children with autism and AS could generate possible novel changes to an object, though they generated fewer of these relative to controls. Furthermore, these were all reality-based, rather than imaginative. Experiment 3

Unleashing creativity in people with Parkinson's disease: a pilot study of a co-designed creative arts therapy.

BACKGROUND: Conventional medical management, while essential, cannot address all multifaceted consequences of Parkinson's disease (PD). This pilot study explores the potential of a co-designed creative arts therapy on health-related quality of life, well-being, and pertinent non-motor symptoms. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory pilot study with a pre-post design using validated questionnaires. Eight individuals with PD participated in the program. The investigated intervention was a 10-week creative arts therapy with weekly 90-120-min sessions, guided by three creative therapists. Particip

Do real or hypothetical rewards facilitate creative performance? The effect of reward on creative problem solving.

While reward cues have long been considered to enhance creative performance, little is known about can rewards affect creative problem solving by manipulate the flexibility and persistence state. Real and hypothetical rewards and two creative problem-solving tasks were used to answer this question. We tested the hypothesis that real rewards would positively affect creativity tasks that benefit from a persistence state (e.g., compound remote associate, CRA), while hypothetical rewards would positively impact tasks that benefit from a flexibility state (e.g., chunk decomposition, CD). Additional
