Beyond Psychological Trauma: Associations of Nutritional Status with Depression in Child and Adolescent Victims of Crime.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children and adolescents exposed to criminal victimization are at increased risk for depression; however, the contribution of nutritional status to depressive symptom severity in this vulnerable population remains poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to examine the associations between depression severity and nutritional parameters in child and adolescent victims of crime. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 72 children and adolescents (aged 10-16 years) referred to a forensic medicine department in Türkiye. Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometri

Rape Crimes in the Brazilian Federal District: A Four-Year Analysis of Vulnerabilities and Victimization Pattern.

Rape is a multidimensional public health and human rights concern with profound and lasting effects. This census-based, cross-sectional study examined 3,375 police-reported cases of rape crimes in the Brazilian Federal District (2018-2021), assessing victim profiles, perpetrator characteristics, contextual factors, and spatial distribution. Vulnerable victims, predominantly children under 14 years (82.1%), comprised 67.3% of cases. Most events occurred indoors (81.0%) and were perpetrated by family members or acquaintances (83.5%). Regions with higher rape crimes rates generally exhibited lowe

DNA analysis of dental pulp to link incinerated remains of homicide victim to crime scene.

Teeth endure postmortem degradation and extreme changes in ambient temperature and pressure better than most human tissues. This ability to resist deterioration allows the teeth to be studied as a method of establishing the identity of a decedent. Additionally, dental hard tissues, and in some instances soft tissues, may provide investigators with other sources of forensic data. In this case, a female homicide victim was transported to a location where her remains were burned. The high temperatures of a gasoline fire effectively incinerated the body precluding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analy

Beyond fear: the role of peritraumatic responses in posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms among female crime victims.

This study examines peritraumatic (and posttrauma) responses in a sample of female crime victims who had been sexually or physically assaulted within the previous 2 months. Women were interviewed about their emotional and behavioral responses during the trauma and assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptomatology. Results indicate that women experience a wide range of behavioral and emotional responses during a traumatic event and that these responses have implications for posttrauma adjustment. Women who experienced behaviors typical of a freeze response are more likely

Radiological evidence in legal contexts: forensic versus clinical reporting in cases involving living victims of violent crime.

PURPOSE: Forensic medical examinations are essential for evaluating victims of potential crimes. Radiology, particularly computed tomography (CT), has become a valuable tool in postmortem and clinical forensic contexts. However, when assessing living victims, forensic evaluations often face challenges due to reliance on clinical records, which primarily focus on medical treatment rather than forensic interpretation. Clinical radiology (CR) reports frequently omit forensically relevant findings. In contrast, forensic radiological (FR) reports may provide more relevant insights into such details

[Physical and gynecological examinations in female victims of sexual violence with special emphasis on crime-reporting behaviour].

Sexual abuse of females is a common form of violence with a high dark figure. While part of the victims decide to report the event to the police, many women are embarrassed to do so for a number of reasons. Retrospectively, examinations performed in Berne (Switzerland) between 2006 and 2008 in cases with and without report to the police were analyzed. Altogether, 207 examinations were carried out during that period (65.2% reported to the police, 34.8% without report to the police). 20% of the incidents were reported to the police after the examination. One third of the victims in both groups c

Special testimony of children and adolescents who are victims or witnesses of sexual crimes: the perspective of the professionals involved.

The Special Testimony (ST) is a judicial procedure designed to protect victims of sexual violence. This study examined the perspectives of professionals involved in ST (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, psychologists, social workers) through semi-structured interviews. Inductive thematic analysis revealed ten key categories: (1) professionals' concerns; (2) procedural benefits; (3) perspectives of the defence; (4) procedural aspects; (5) overall professional perceptions; (6) benefits for the victims; (7) strategies to facilitate testimony; (8) weaknesses of ST; (9) suggestions for improvement; and

A novel person-reported measure of safety-seeking behaviours: a preliminary study in older victims of community crime.

BACKGROUND: Community crime against older people is of increasing concern but the relationship between safety-seeking behaviours and continued psychological distress has not been examined. As existing assessment tools have limited validity, we aimed to investigate this by designing a novel person-reported safety-seeking behaviour measure (PRSBM) and conducting preliminary evaluation of its wider applicability. METHOD: We collected mixed-methods data from n=100 initially distressed older victims at 3 months post-crime, using the PRSBM. This asked older victims how often they engaged in six beh

Memory bias for faces that are perceived as hostile by crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder.

The present study tested, and found support for, the hypotheses that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder have: (i) a general memory impairment for faces; and (ii) a memory bias for faces that they perceive as hostile, even when these faces are not arranged to show any hostile face expressions. It is suggested that crime victims with acute post-traumatic stress disorder perform worse on recognition memory due to impaired concentration, and that they allocate their limited attentional resources to the detection of hostility in others in order to avoid being victimized again.

Complex insomnia: insomnia and sleep-disordered breathing in a consecutive series of crime victims with nightmares and PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance in posttraumatic stress disorder is very common. However, no previous posttraumatic stress disorder studies systematically examined sleep breathing disturbances, which might influence nightmares, insomnia, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. METHODS: Forty-four consecutive crime victims with nightmares and insomnia underwent standard polysomnography coupled with a nasal pressure transducer to measure airflow limitation diagnostic of obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome. RESULTS: Forty of 44 participants tested positive on objectiv

Twice Harmed: A Descriptive Analysis of Illinois Crime Victim Compensation After Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma centers are often the first access portal for victims of sexual assault (SA) and domestic violence (DV), with many requiring surgery or long-term follow-up. In Illinois, crime victim compensation (CVC) offers up to $45,000 to cover victim medical expenses. We hypothesized that CVC claims in Illinois following SA and DV result in significant delays, high rejection rates, and small rewards. METHODS: Illinois CVC data (2012-2024) was obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request. CVC data related to SA and DV, including claim types and awards, was compared between gender

Geocoding child sexual abuse: An explorative analysis on journey to crime and to victimization from French police data.

BACKGROUND: For several years, the link between mobility, human behavior and crime have highlighted by criminologists. Nevertheless, due to the difficulty of compiling sensitive geographical data, the spatial behavior of extrafamilial child abusers has received little empirical attention. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore the spatial mobility of victims and offenders of extrafamilial child abuse under the lens of the crime mobility triangle methodology. The main objective is to analyze the distribution of the spatial mobility patterns and determine which factors are associate

An open-label trial of evidence-based cognitive behavior therapy for nightmares and insomnia in crime victims with PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia and nightmares are perceived as secondary phenomena in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Scant treatment research has targeted these two sleep disturbances. This study reports on an open-label trial of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia and disturbing dreams in crime victims with PTSD. The relationship among nightmares, sleep disturbances, and PTSD symptoms is discussed. METHOD: Sixty-two participants completed a 10-hour group treatment consisting of imagery rehearsal for nightmares and sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and sleep restriction for insomnia. Nightmare

The Clinical and Cost-Effectiveness of a Victim Improvement Package (VIP) for the Reduction of Chronic Symptoms of Depression or Anxiety in Older Victims of Community-Crime: the VIP RCT Synopsis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the psychological impact of community crime in older victims, whether signposting to their general practitioner is helpful, or the barriers and facilitators to help-seeking. Previous pilot work suggested that a 'cognitive-behavioural therapy'-informed Victim Improvement Package showed promise for treating psychological distress in older victims, but further evaluation was needed. METHODS: The study was undertaken between June 2017 and June 2023 in selected areas of a United Kingdom city using Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Safer Neighbourhood Teams consist of a g

A ten-year analysis of drug-facilitated crimes: Prevalence and characteristics at a tertiary hospital victim protection center.

Drug-Facilitated Crimes (DFCs) involve criminal offenses where the victim's intoxicated state plays a central role. The substances used, often central nervous system depressants, are challenging to detect, leading to a high rate of undiagnosed cases. As a result, DFCs remain a form of violence that is weakly characterized. This cross-sectional study analyzed 1104 violence-related cases presented to the Children and Victim Protection Center (CAVPC) at a tertiary hospital. Of these, 12.2 % were suspected to be DFCs between 2014 and 2019, while 38.5 % were suspected to be DFCs between 2020 and 20

Careful When You Click? How the Dark Triad of Personality Can Influence the Likelihood of Online Crime Victimization.

Cybercrime is a growing problem, with increasing numbers of people reporting they have been a victim. However, the literature has tended to focus on the characteristics of the perpetrator and has often neglected to examine how the individual differences of victims may have an impact. This paper investigates how the Dark Triad - Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy - may increase the chances of being a victim of online crime. To do this, the Cyber Routine Activities Theory was applied, which suggests victimization is a result of two things: 1) a user's routine online activity which may

The effect of victimization, mental health, and protective factors on crime and illicit drug use among homeless young adults.

Although research has found high rates of child maltreatment, widespread victimization, and other negative outcomes among homeless youth and young adults, resiliency among this population has largely been understudied. Specifically, a gap remains in terms of how protective factors such as self-efficacy, low deviant beliefs, and religiosity operate among homeless youth and young adults. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between various forms of victimization, mental health, and protective factors with property and violent crime and illicit drug use among homeless young ad
