Factors that influence critical care nurses' management of sedation for ventilated patients in critical care: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Optimising sedation use is key to timely extubation. Whilst sedation protocols may be used to guide critical care nurses' management of sedation, sedation management and decision-making is complex, influenced by multiple factors related to patients' circumstances, intensive care unit design and the workforce. AIM: To explore (i) critical care nurses' experiences managing sedation in mechanically ventilated patients and (ii) the factors that influence their sedation-related decision-making. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed

Virtual reality and critical care education in nursing: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The nursing care of a critically ill patient in the intensive care unit requires specific training. Virtual reality can facilitate the nursing assessment of critically ill patients. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of virtual reality as a tool for teaching nursing assessment of critically ill patients. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. SETTING: University of the Balearic Islands (Spain) during the 2022 academic year. PARTICIPANTS: Third-year nursing students. METHODS: A specific environment was designed for virtual reality immersion using a BNEXT head-mounted display.

Issues in preparedness for biologic terrorism: a perspective for critical care nursing.

Although the use of microorganisms as weapons is as old a practice as war itself, the sense of our collective vulnerability to these agents has seldom been as great. The events of late 2001 demonstrated that the United States is vulnerable to terrorist attack carried out by highly motivated, organized, funded, and trained individuals. It is our collective good fortune that the perpetrator of the anthrax mailings was not bent on destruction of the scale witnessed on September 11, 2001. Because acute care and critical care nurses are on the forefront of community disease surveillance, they must

Compassion fatigue among critical care nurses: a literature review.

Providing compassionate care continually can result in nurses developing compassion fatigue - a state of physical, emotional and psychological exhaustion. Critical care nurses are particularly at risk of compassion fatigue, in part due to their constant exposure to patients with life-threatening conditions and patient deaths. This article details a literature review that aimed to explore compassion fatigue among critical care nurses, with a view to identifying interventions and coping strategies to enhance their well-being as well as to guide nurse managers in protecting staff well-being. Orthopedic Pain Management: Tools for Practicing Critical Care Nurses.

Nurses practicing in critical care units manage all forms of traumatic, acute, and chronic pain. Chronic pain must be managed in critical care scenarios to facilitate patient comfort and eventual recovery and healing. Patients with orthopedic injuries and conditions have distinct care needs that require specialized knowledge on the provider's part. Critical care nurses manage orthopedic traumatic injuries while simultaneously managing underlying acute orthopedic conditions. Pain experiences are individual to the person experiencing pain. The Internet is a rich source for pain-management materi

Nurse practitioner/physician assistant staffing and critical care mortality.

BackgroundICUs are increasingly staffed with nurse practitioners/physician assistants (NPs/PAs), but it is unclear how NPs/PAs influence quality of care. We examined the association between NP/PA staffing and in-hospital mortality for patients in the ICU.MethodsWe used retrospective cohort data from the 2009 to 2010 APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) clinical information system and an ICU-level survey. We included patients aged ≥ 17 years admitted to one of 29 adult medical and mixed medical/surgical ICUs in 22 US hospitals. Because this survey could not assign NPs/PAs to

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: implications for critical care nurses.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is being used increasingly in the treatment of malignant and nonmalignant diseases. The treatment modality has been proven effective but is not without risks. Studies consistently have identified the need for advanced supportive care (e.g., multiple organ dysfunction, vasopressor use, mechanical ventilation) as a negative prognostic indicator in patients who have received HSCT. Among patients who have received HSCT, 15%-40% require critical care monitoring or advanced support. Nurses on intensive care units can positively impact outcomes for trans

Nurse practitioners in pediatric critical care: results of a national survey.

The nurse practitioner in pediatric critical care is a distinct advanced practice nursing role that has seen a tremendous increase in development and implementation over the past 10 years. There is a paucity of literature on this unique and valuable role. A total of 74 nurse practitioners practicing in pediatric critical care were surveyed. Part I of the survey solicited descriptive information of the nurse practitioner including background, work environment, reporting structure, and salary. The respondents also identified their role responsibilities that included direct patient management, nu

Patient with coronary artery spasm and role of the critical care nurse.

Review of the literature reveals that coronary artery spasm exhibits a wide variation in clinical presentation. This variation makes accurate diagnosis and management difficult; however, precise diagnosis is essential so that appropriate therapy can be given. Critical care nurses are in an excellent position to assess patient findings that may help suggest or exclude the presence of coronary artery spasm as the cause of the myocardial ischemia. Critical care nurses also can play an important part in suggesting and carrying out appropriate management of coronary artery spasm.
