The critical period for ocular dominance plasticity in the Ferret's visual cortex.

Microelectrode recordings and optical imaging of intrinsic signals were used to define the critical period for susceptibility to monocular deprivation (MD) in the primary visual cortex of the ferret. Ferrets were monocularly deprived for 2, 7 or >14 d, beginning between postnatal day 19 (P19) and P110. The responses of visual cortical neurons to stimulation of the two eyes were used to gauge the onset, peak, and decline of the critical period. MDs ending before P32 produced little or no loss of response to the deprived eye. MDs of 7 d or more beginning around P42 produced the greatest effects.

Effects of interaction of an early experience of reward through maternal contact or its denial with social stress during adolescence on the serotonergic system and the stress responsiveness of adult female rats.

Experiences during critical periods, such as the neonatal and adolescence, play a critical role in determining adult stress-coping behavior. Based on the aforementioned we developed an experimental protocol, which included a neonatal experience and a social stress during adolescence. The serotonergic system is known as an important modulator of coping ability and, in general, emotional balance in both normal and pathological states, such as depression and anxiety, for which females are more vulnerable. Thus in the present work we used female rats and determined 5-HT, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid

Physiological stress response of young adults exposed to bullying during adolescence.

Peer victimization in the form of bullying is a chronic social stressor experienced by many humans during development. Exposure to bullying has been associated with a variety of mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Participants pre-selected for the presence or absence of a history of being bullied were brought into a laboratory and placed in a stressful situation. Blood pressure, heart rate, and salivary cortisol levels were measured before the introduction of the stressor (Time 1), at the end of the stressor (Time 2), and after its removal (Time 3). Men with a history of exposure

Mastering self-care: a qualitative exploration of the psychological and behavioral experiences of older heart failure patients living alone during hospital discharge preparation.

BACKGROUND: The transition from hospital to home presents significant psychological and practical challenges for older heart failure patients living alone (OHELP), who must navigate complex self-care needs within a socially isolated context. Although discharge preparation is a critical period for adapting to solitary living, the psychological and behavioral coping mechanisms of this vulnerable population remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the psychological experiences during the pre-discharge period regarding self-care readiness, and to describe the behavioral strate

Whisker maps in marsupials: nerve lesions and critical periods.

In the wallaby, whisker-related patterns develop over a protracted period of postnatal maturation in the pouch. Afferents arrive simultaneously in the thalamus and cortex from postnatal day (P) 15. Whisker-related patterns are first seen in the thalamus at P50 and are well formed by P73, before cortical patterns first appear (P75) or are well developed (P85). This study used the slow developmental sequence and accessibility of the pouch young to investigate the effect of nerve lesions before afferent arrival, or at times when thalamic patterns are obvious but cortical patterns not yet formed.

Effects of prenatal stress on sexual partner preference in mice.

Three-month old, male Swiss Webster mice were born to either control dams or dams who had been prenatally stressed with light, heat, noise and handling during the last week of gestation. As adults, male offspring were tested on sexual partner preference and sexual behavior (mounting, intromissions and lordosis) with a sexually experienced male stimulus animal and a stimulus estrous female. In comparison to males born to control dams, prenatally stressed males showed a sexual partner preference for the sexually active male as demonstrated by a negative partner preference score, more and longer

Implementing a Cold Debrief Program in the Emergency Department: A Framework for Reflection and System Improvement.

The aims of debriefing can be diverse and may include psychological support, departmental quality improvement or an educational focus. There has been increased attention on 'hot debriefs', however, competing clinical and departmental demands can limit the ability of response teams to meaningfully reflect on critical cases. 'Cold debriefs' are a delayed form of debriefing, occurring days to weeks after the critical event. This article reflects on the implementation of a cold debriefing model within a tertiary emergency department in Australia utilising Lewin's Theory of planned change. Over a 1

Heat, menstruation, and mental health in adolescence and young adulthood: Understudied in climate-health research.

Ambient heat is an escalating climate-related hazard, yet its implications for menstruation and adolescent and young adult mental health remain understudied. Menstruating individuals face unique physiological and psychosocial challenges that may be intensified in the presence of heat stress. These challenges can be further shaped by stigma, period poverty, and developmental vulnerability, with potential implications for depression, anxiety, and psychological wellbeing. Heat exposure may disrupt thermoregulation, exacerbate menstrual symptoms, and heighten psychological stress, but the combined

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), genetic polymorphisms and neurochemical correlates in experimentation with psychotropic drugs among adolescents.

Epidemiological and clinical data show frequent associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance abuse susceptibility particularly in adolescents. A large body of evidences suggests that the possible dysregulation of neuroendocrine responses as well as neurotransmitters function induced by childhood traumatic experiences and emotional neglect could constitute one of the essential biological changes implementing substance abuse vulnerability. Moreover, genotype variables and its environment interactions have been associated with an increased risk for early onset substance

Age- and experience-dependent expression of dynamin I and synaptotagmin I in cat visual system.

Dynamin I (Dyn I) and Synaptotagmin I (Syt I) are essential for endocytosis-exocytosis processes, thus for neurotransmission. Despite their related function at presynaptic terminals, Dyn I and Syt I displayed opposite expression patterns during visual cortex maturation in the cat. Dyn I was more abundantly expressed in adults, while Syt I exhibited higher levels in kittens of postnatal day 30 (P30). In area 17 this developmental difference was most obvious in layers II/III. Layer VI displayed a strong hybridization signal for both molecules, independent of age. In addition, Syt I levels were h

'Nurturing the brain' as an emerging research field involving child neurology.

'Nurturing the brain' is an emerging research field integrating brain science, child care and education, which also involves child neurology. It has emerged from the recent remarkable progress in brain science and strong social demands for improvements in child care and education. This article reviews the current status of three major research themes in this field. First, developmental disorders represented by attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism and Asperger syndrome often introduce difficulties in child care and education, which are to be addressed by appropriate assessment and t

Gaze-stabilizing deficits and latent nystagmus in monkeys with brief, early-onset visual deprivation: eye movement recordings.

The normal development and the capacity to calibrate gaze-stabilizing systems may depend on normal vision during infancy. At the end of 1 yr of dark rearing, cats have gaze-stabilizing deficits similar to that of the newborn human infant including decreased monocular optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) in the nasal to temporal (N-T) direction and decreased velocity storage in the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR). The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent restricted vision during the first 2 mo of life in monkeys affects the development of gaze-stabilizing systems. The eyelids of both eyes w

Environmental Enrichment Partially Repairs Subcortical Mapping Errors in Ten-m3 Knock-Out Mice during an Early Critical Period.

Environmental enrichment (EE) has been shown to improve neural function via the regulation of cortical plasticity. Its capacity to induce functional and/or anatomical repair of miswired circuits is unknown. Ten-m3 knock-out (KO) mice exhibit a highly stereotyped and profound miswiring of ipsilateral retinogeniculate axons and associated deficits in binocularly-mediated visual behavior. We determined whether, and when, EE can drive the repair of subcortical wiring deficits by analyzing Ten-m3 KO and wild-type (WT) mice that were enriched for six weeks from adulthood, weaning or birth in compari

Effects of transient auditory deprivation during critical periods on the development of auditory temporal processing.

OBJECTIVES: The central auditory pathway matures through sensory experiences and it is known that sensory experiences during periods called critical periods exert an important influence on brain development. The present study aimed to investigate whether temporary auditory deprivation during critical periods (CPs) could have a detrimental effect on the development of auditory temporal processing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve neonatal rats were randomly assigned to control and study groups; Study group experienced temporary (18-20 days) auditory deprivation during CPs (Early deprivation study

Dynamic analysis of protracted withdrawal symptoms, neurotransmitters, cytokine content and psychological status of heroin addicts in Yunnan Province.

BACKGROUND: Yunnan Province, adjacent to the "Golden Triangle," a notorious drug trafficking region, faces a severe public health challenge due to high rates of heroin addiction. Despite existing interventions, protracted withdrawal symptoms (PWS) remain a significant barrier to recovery and a primary cause of relapse. This study investigates the dynamic changes in neurotransmitter and cytokine levels and their correlation with PWS and psychological status in heroin addicts undergoing detoxification. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 136 voluntary heroin detoxification pa

Study protocol: home-based physical rehabilitation for survivors of a critical illness [ACTRN12605000166673].

INTRODUCTION: Numerous primary studies and several review papers have highlighted delayed physical and psychological recovery for survivors of critical illness, often beyond 6 months after discharge. This randomized controlled trial with blinded assessment aims to test the effects of an 8-week, home-based, individually tailored physical rehabilitation programme on physical and psychological recovery for survivors of a critical illness after discharge from hospital. METHOD: Participants are survivors of a critical illness discharged from nine intensive care units (ICUs) in Australia, who are a

Associations between psychological needs satisfaction, humor styles, and psychological distress in emerging adults.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging adulthood is a developmental period marked by increased psychological vulnerability due to rising demands related to autonomy, identity development, and social relationships. Self-determination theory (SDT) posits that satisfaction of the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness is essential for psychological adjustment, whereas unmet needs are associated with psychological distress. While the direct association between needs satisfaction and distress is well documented, less is known about the psychological processes that may account for this

Prepartum and postpartum regulation of maternal behaviour in the rat.

Maternal behaviour in the rat consists of four principal components: nursing or crouching over the young, retrieving pups to the nest, body and genital licking of pups, and nest-building. Normally the onset of maternal behaviour occurs at parturition but studies reveal that the true onset is somewhat earlier, around 24 hours pre partum. The onset of maternal behaviour is hormonally determined and it is most likely that the ovarian hormone oestradiol plays a major role under the specific conditions that exist pre partum. The onset of maternal behaviour requires the resolution of tendencies of f
