[Epidemiology of arterial hypertension in Croatia in 2000].

Arterial hypertension is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Treatment of hypertension has been shown to decrease the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, end-stage renal disease and peripheral vascular disease. It is apparent from some results that blood pressure should be lowered in all patients having other cardiovascular risk factors regardless whether they are hypertensive or non-hypertensive persons. However, complete information considering awareness, treatment and control of arterial hypertension is still missing. Th

[The development of third molars in the children of Croatia].

The objective of this research was to investigate the prevalence of third molars in children in Istria aged 7 to 18. There are 2350 panoramic radiographs of children in Istria that have been analysed and then divided into 7 age groups. In each of these groups there was the same number of boys and girls. It can be expected that over 50% of examinees have third morals at ages between 10-11. The development of third morals starts earlier in the mandible, and it is statistically significant that there are more third morals in the mandible before the age of 12 than in the maxilla (p < 0.01). Occurrence of hereditary bullous epidermolyses in Croatia.

To determine the occurrence of hereditary bullous epidermolyses (EB) in Croatia, Yugoslavia, from 1960 to 1987, cases were gathered from the hospital files of dermatologic and pediatric clinics and departments throughout the area. The diagnosis of EB type was made on the basis of clinical features, patients' histories, and light microscopy and electron microscopy findings. Fifty families with 58 patients were registered; 44 patients were examined personally by one of the authors. The most frequent type of EB in Croatia was recessive dystrophic EB Hallopeau-Siemens, occurring in 35 of the 58 in

[Usutu virus: a novel flavivirus in Croatia].

Usutu virus (USUV) belongs to the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, Japanese encephalitis serocomplex. The virus was discovered in 1959 in South Africa and has emerged since 1996 causing epizootics with high avian mortality in Europe. The importance of USUV in humans is not fully understood. However, several human clinical cases of USUV infection described so far indicate the role of this virus as an antropozoonotic agent. In Croatia, serologic evidence of USUV was first documented in 2011 in two horses from Zagreb and Sisak-Moslavina County. In 2012, USUV neutralizing antibodies were fou

Depression and suicidality in the adolescents in Osijek, Croatia.

Mood disorders in children and adolescents and their treatments have received increasing attention and clinical investigation over the last few decades. The core features of mood disorders are essentially the same across the life span. Developmental level, however, appears to influence the expression of certain mood symptoms with greater frequency than other within the framework of depressive disorders. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in children between the ages of 10 and 15 years and the third leading cause of death among the adolescents and young adults 15-25 years. In this art

[Epidemiology of hepatitis B and C in Croatia].

The incidence of HBV and HCV infection is hard to determine because of the high number of asymptomatic infections. According to data of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, there are 200 newly infected persons with hepatitis B and approximately the same number of newly identified HBsAg carriers occur each year. Accordingly, Croatia is among the countries with less than 2% of HBsAg carriers in the general population. In these circumstances, HBV infection is most often spread among adolescents and younger adults. The route of transmission is most often sexual (semen) or through the skin in h

The benzodiazepine nation of Croatia: an observational, comparative study of psychotropic drug utilization between Croatia and Sweden 2014-2015.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of psychotropic drugs (PD) is increasing worldwide with a significant variation between countries. We sought to compare the utilization of PD between Croatia and Sweden to identify areas for improvement in rational use of drugs. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using national databases to assess utilization of PD (ATC N05, N06) in Croatia and Sweden in 2014 and 2015. RESULTS: Presc

Enuresis in school children from eastern Croatia.

The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of nocturnal incontinence (NI) in 6-to-7-year-old children from eastern Croatia, to determine the factors associated with NI and to evaluate parental perception of the problem. From May to September 2004, the parents of 3,011 children were asked to complete an anonymous validated questionnaire. The overall prevalence of reported NI was 1.2% (35/3011). All of the cases were cases of secondary NI. NI was significantly more frequent in boys than in girls. Family history of enuresis was present in 68.6% (24/35) of enuretic children. Only 17.1%
