From Floral By-Product to Bioactive Resource: Phytochemical Profiling and Antioxidant Potential of Crocus sativus Stamens.

The production of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) generates large quantities of floral by-products, particularly stamens, which are often discarded despite their potential as sources of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to provide, for the first time, a comprehensive and comparative characterization of C. sativus stamen extracts and fractions using a multianalytical approach (UHPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS, ICP-OES, and spectrophotometry), in order to reveal their nutritional, phytochemical, and antioxidant potential. Elemental analyses revealed high levels of essential macro- and micronutrients such as p

Comparative study between two types of Crocus sativus L. corms: chemical composition, antioxidant, genotoxic, and cytotoxic effects.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) corms, often discarded due to their small size, represent a valuable by-product with potential health benefits. This study aims to enhance the value of saffron corms by comparing stored corms (HEES) and fresh corms (HEEF) in terms of chemical composition, antioxidant, genotoxic, and cytotoxic effects. Both corm types were macerated in 50% ethanol, and levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, lycopene, anthocyanins, saponins, and sugars were quantified. Their antioxidant capacity was assessed through DPPH, FRAP, and β-carotene assays, while genotoxicity was ev

Exploring the Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Saffron (Crocus sativus) Tepals Extract within the Circular Bioeconomy.

Repurposing saffron (Crocus sativus) waste presents a sustainable strategy for generating high-value products within the bioeconomy framework. Typically, flower components are discarded after stigma harvest, resulting in significant waste-350 kg of tepals per kilogram of stigmas. This research employed a comprehensive approach, integrating bioactivity studies (in vitro and in silico) with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluations, to extract and assess bioactive compounds from C. sativus tepals sourced in Tuscany, Italy. Phytochemical characterization using UPLC-MS/MS revealed a high abundance a

Alleviation of viper venom induced platelet apoptosis by crocin (Crocus sativus): implications for thrombocytopenia in viper bites.

Viper envenomations are characterized by prominent local and systemic manifestations including hematological alterations. Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) plays crucial role in the pathophysiology of hemorrhage by targeting/altering the platelets function which may result in thrombocytopenia. Platelets undergo the classic events of mitochondria-mediated apoptotic pathway due to augmented endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The observed anticoagulant effects during viper envenomations could be due to exacerbated platelet apoptosis and thrombocytope

Application of the relative molar sensitivity method using GC-FID to quantify safranal in saffron (Crocus sativus L.).

Safranal is one flavor component of saffron, which is used as a spice, food additive, and crude drug. In ISO3632, safranal is defined as the compound that contributes to the quality of saffron, and many quantitative determination methods for safranal have been reported. However, safranal is volatile and degrades easily during storage, and an analytical standard with an exact known purity is not commercially available, making it difficult to quantify accurately the content of safranal in saffron. Here, we developed a method for quantifying safranal using relative molar sensitivity (RMS), called
