Granular straw amendment in improving soil structure and crop productivity in saline soil.

Soil salinization represents a significant global threat to agricultural sustainability and the quality of arable land worldwide. This study systematically evaluated the effects of wheat straw applied in different forms-chopped (CW), granular (GW), and biochar (BW)-on soil structure and wheat growth across mild (S1), moderate (S2), and severe (S3) salinity levels in a pot experiment using saline soil from the Yellow River Basin in Inner Mongolia. Results showed that straw amendments, particularly GW and BW, markedly improved soil physical properties: GW most effectively increased the content o

Reducing pesticide use while preserving crop productivity and profitability on arable farms.

Achieving sustainable crop production while feeding an increasing world population is one of the most ambitious challenges of this century1. Meeting this challenge will necessarily imply a drastic reduction of adverse environmental effects arising from agricultural activities2. The reduction of pesticide use is one of the critical drivers to preserve the environment and human health. Pesticide use could be reduced through the adoption of new production strategies3-5; however, whether substantial reductions of pesticide use are possible without impacting crop productivity and profitability is d

Assessment of by-products of bioenergy systems (anaerobic digestion and gasification) as potential crop nutrient.

Alternative fertilizer resources have drawn attention in recent times in order to cope up with ever increasing demand for fertilizer. By-products of bioenergy system are considered favourable as organic fertilizer due to their ability to recycle plant nutrients. Present study evaluates fertilizer suitability of by-products of two bioenergy systems viz. 3 types of anaerobic digestion by-products (digestate) from local surplus biomass such as cowdung, Ipomoea carnea:cowdung (60:40) and ricestraw:green gram stover:cowdung (30:30:40) and one gasification by-product (biochar) from rice husk. Incineration of biomass and utilization of product gas as a CO2 source for crop production in closed systems: gas quality and phytotoxicity.

This study addressed the recycle of carbon from inedible biomass to CO2 for utilization in crop production. Earlier work identified incineration as an attractive approach to resource recovery from solid wastes because the products are well segregated. Given the effective separation of carbon into the gaseous product stream from the incinerator in the form of CO2 we captured the gaseous stream produced during incineration of wheat inedible biomass and utilized it as the CO2 source for crop production. Injection rate was based on maintenance of CO2 concentration in the growing environment. The c

Harnessing biocompatible bio-based nanoprotectants for phytohormone modulation and heavy metal detoxification in sustainable crop production.

Bio-based nanomaterials (BNMs) have emerged as promising modulators of plant growth hormone (phytohormone) signaling pathways under combined heavy metal (HM) stress conditions. This review investigates how BNMs influence hormone-regulated stress signaling networks to improve plant tolerance to HM stress at biochemical, molecular and physiological levels. Plant extract and microbial-mediated synthesis strategies use biological metabolites as reducing and stabilizing agents, providing environmentally compatible routes for agricultural nanomaterials. BNMs may influence phytohormone-regulated stre

Biosynthesized metal oxide nanoparticles for sustainable agriculture: next-generation nanotechnology for crop production, protection and management.

The current agricultural sector is not only in its most vulnerable state but is also becoming a threat to our environment due to expanding population and growing food demands along with worsening climatic conditions. In addition, numerous agrochemicals presently being used as fertilizers and pesticides have low efficiency and high toxicity. However, the rapid growth of nanotechnology has shown great promise to tackle these issues replacing conventional agriculture industries. Since the last decade, nanomaterials especially metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) have been attractive for improving ag

Cynara cardunculus L. as a Multipurpose Crop for Plant Secondary Metabolites Production in Marginal Stressed Lands.

Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) is a Mediterranean crop, member of the Asteraceae family, characterized by high production of biomass and secondary metabolites and by a good adaptation to climate change, usable in green chemistry, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical sectors. Recent studies demonstrated the ability of cardoon to grow up in a stressful environment, which is associated with enhanced biosynthesis of biologically active compounds in these plants, and this effect is increased by abiotic stresses (salt, heat, pollution, and drought stress) that characterize many world marginal areas, a

Post-harvest cleaning, sanitization, and microbial monitoring of soilless nutrient delivery systems for sustainable space crop production.

Bioregenerative food systems that routinely produce fresh, safe-to-eat crops onboard spacecraft can supplement the nutrition and variety of shelf-stable spaceflight food systems for use during future exploration missions (i.e., low earth orbit, Mars transit, lunar, and Martian habitats). However, current space crop production systems are not yet sustainable because they primarily utilize consumable granular media and, to date, operate like single crop cycle, space biology experiments where root modules are sanitized prior to launch and discarded after each grow-out. Moreover, real-time detecti

Refined crop modelling reveals intensifying impacts of droughts and heatwaves on global wheat productivity.

Extreme weather events, including heatwaves and droughts, are becoming more frequent and intense, yet their impact on crop productivity remain highly uncertain. Here we jointly improve the structure and parameterization of a crop model to enhance its ability to reproduce climate impacts on global wheat productivity at 10-km resolution. Compared with a multimodel ensemble, the improved parameterization increases model skill by 30%, 20% and 7% in simulating global wheat yield losses from droughts, heatwaves and their compound events, respectively, during 1981-2015. Over the same period, the impr

Co-Benefits of Intercropping on Crop Productivity, Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration and N2O Mitigation.

Intercropping is a promising sustainable agriculture practice, but its adoption is hindered by the potential reduction in benefits when shifting from monoculture to intercropping, especially if there are trade-offs between yield, soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In this study, we synthesized 3843 paired observations from 510 field-based studies that compared the yields, SOC and N2O emissions of intercropping systems (only crop-crop intercropping for grain yield and including crop-tree agroforestry in addition to crop-crop intercropping for SOC and N2O) with monocult

Global meta-analysis of plasma-activated water for improving crop establishment, productivity, and health.

Plasma-activated water (PAW) has emerged as a promising eco-friendly technology and a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers in agriculture due to its role in plant growth, nutrition, and disease suppression. To comprehensively evaluate its effectiveness, a meta-analysis was conducted using published studies comprising diverse crops, experimental conditions, and PAW generation chemistry. Log response ratios (LnRR) and pooled estimates with 95% confidence intervals were calculated, and forest plots were generated for each response variable. Results revealed that PAW application signifi

Addition of longer wavelength absorbing chlorophylls into crops could increase their photosynthetic productivity by 26.

Crop leaves absorb approximately 90% of visible photons (400 - 700 nm) but transmit or reflect most far-red (FR) photons (700 - 800 nm). However, some cyanobacteria use FR photons up to 800 nm by incorporating chlorophyll (Chl) d or/and f into their photosystems. Here, we use a 3D canopy model to evaluate whether introducing these pigments could improve photosynthetic performance of field grown soybean. We simulate photon absorption and CO2 assimilation show that the introduction of Chl d and f would significantly enhance photosynthesis, especially in the lower canopy, where visible light is d

Microbial Food Safety in Small-Scale and Commercial Integrated Crop and Pig Production Environments in South Africa.

Integrated farming systems (IFSs) combining crop and livestock production are globally promoted for enhancing resource recycling and food security. However, the interconnectedness of these food production systems may create pathways for transmission of bacterial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) between animals, crops, and the surrounding environment, potentially compromising food safety. This study determined the level of microbial contamination using indicator microorganisms (total coliforms and Escherichia coli). In addition, the presence and prevalence of foodborne pathogens (Sh

Pathogenic invasive microbes Trichoderma pleuroticola transform bacterial and fungal community diversity in Auricularia cornea crop production system.

Pathogenic invasion of Trichoderma pleuroticola profoundly altered microflora in the Auricularia cornea crop production system, impacting diversity and composition in both artificial bed-log and fruiting bodies. A more complex ecological network between the diseased and healthy bodies. Researchers still have poor knowledge about how the important agricultural relationship between the composition of the microbiome of the artificial bed-log and the fruiting bodies is infected by the pathogenic invasive microbes T. pleuroticola, but this knowledge is crucial if we want to use or improve it. Salt-Tolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria for Enhancing Crop Productivity of Saline Soils.

Soil salinity has emerged as a serious issue for global food security. It is estimated that currently about 62 million hectares or 20 percent of the world's irrigated land is affected by salinity. The deposition of an excess amount of soluble salt in cultivable land directly affects crop yields. The uptake of high amount of salt inhibits diverse physiological and metabolic processes of plants even impacting their survival. The conventional methods of reclamation of saline soil which involve scraping, flushing, leaching or adding an amendment (e.g., gypsum, CaCl2, etc.) are of limited success a

Rehabilitating acid soils for increasing crop productivity through low-cost liming material.

Productivity of red and lateritic soils is low because of their acidity and deficiencies in few essential nutrients viz., nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, boron, molybdenum etc. We compared the effectiveness of basic slag, a low-cost liming material, with that of calcite as an ameliorant for these soils using mustard followed by rice as test crops. Experiments were conducted with three levels of each of basic slag and calcite along with a control on farmers' fields at 14 different locations. Influence of farmyard manure (FYM) and poultry manure (PM) on the effectiveness of the slag was als
