A cross-cultural study of gambling disorder: a comparison between women from Brazil and the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a cross-cultural comparison of gambling disorder (GD) in women from Brazil and the United States, two countries with pronounced social and cultural differences. We hoped to produce insight into the impact of cultural influences on the presentation of GD in women, which may be useful for the development of culturally-sensitive interventions. METHOD: We assessed 681 women with GD: 406 from a Brazilian sample and 275 from a U.S. SAMPLE: We assessed demographic and gambling behavior variables in addition to co-occurring psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: Fewer Brazilian parti

A cross-cultural comparison of verbal learning and memory functions in reading disabled American and Norwegian adolescents.

The present study reports the results of a cross-cultural analysis of the role of phonetic and semantic cues in verbal learning and memory. A newly developed memory test procedure, the Bergen-Tucson Verbal Learning Test (BTVLT), expands earlier test procedures as phonetic cues are applied in addition to semantic cues in a cued recall procedure. Samples of reading disabled and typically developed adolescents from the US and from Norway were recruited as voluntary participants. The results indicate that the stimulus materials chosen for the memory test are working well in both American and in No

Self-esteem, depression and eating disordered attitudes: a cross-cultural comparison between Cypriot and British young women.

The evidence suggests that eating disorders in countries that fall outside the Western template are not immune to eating disturbance as previously thought. This cross-cultural study investigated self-esteem, depression in relation to eating disordered attitudes across similarly constituted samples from two different cultures, Cyprus and Great Britain. Results revealed higher rates of eating disordered attitudes and depressive tendencies in Cypriot women. For both samples, a positive relationship was found between depression and eating disordered attitudes and this relationship was found to be

The content and characteristics of auditory hallucinations in Saudi Arabia and the UK: a cross-cultural comparison.

This study investigated the content and characteristics of auditory hallucinations reported by 75 patients in Saudi Arabia (SA) and the UK. Each patient was asked to report on the content and characteristics of their hallucinations with regard to several dimensions, including loudness, frequency, clarity and perceived validity. In general, the characteristics of the voices did not vary between the SA and UK patients, but the content differed between cultures. Much of the content of the hallucinations of SA patients was religious and superstitious in nature, whereas instructional themes and run

A cross-cultural comparison on perception for extended reality (XR) learning environmental simulation of animal drug administration.

BACKGROUND: The integration of Extended Reality (XR) technologies into animal-handling training provides science students working with animals in experimental research with an innovative platform for developing practical and ethical skills that contribute to medical advancement. As laboratory practices become increasingly globalized and guided by the 3Rs principle of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement, understanding cross-cultural perceptions of animal-handling protocols has become increasingly important. METHODS: A single-player XR platform with an immersive one-in-one virtual reality (V

Efficacy of two integrated geriatric care pathways for the treatment of hip fractures: a cross-cultural comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have focussed on the implementation and outcomes of geriatric care pathways (GCPs); however, little is known about the possible impact of clinical practices on these pathways. A comparison was made between two traumageriatric care models, one Swiss (CH) and one Dutch (NL), to assess whether these models would perform similarly despite the possible differences in local clinical practices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study included all patients aged 70 years or older with a unilateral hip fracture who underwent surgery in 2014 and 2015. The primary outcomes wer

A cross-cultural clinical comparison between subjects with obsessive-compulsive disorder from the United States and Brazil.

Although OCD is a global problem, the literature comparing, in a direct and standardized way, the manifestations across countries is scarce. Therefore, questions remain as to whether some important clinical findings are replicable worldwide, especially in the developing world. The objective of this study was to perform a clinical comparison of OCD patients recruited in the United States (U.S.) and Brazil. Our sample consisted of 1187 adult, treatment-seeking OCD outpatients from the U.S. (n=236) and Brazil (n=951). With regards to the demographics, U.S. participants with OCD were older, more l

Coping with auditory hallucinations: a cross-cultural comparison between western (British) and non-western (Saudi Arabian) patients.

The majority of schizophrenic patients from Western backgrounds develop strategies to cope with the positive symptoms of their condition. However, there is little evidence to indicate how these coping mechanisms are affected by cultural background. Seventy schizophrenic patients from Saudi Arabia (SA) and the United Kingdom (UK) who reported auditory hallucinations were interviewed to explore the ways in which they coped with their voices and sounds. Patients from both cultures had several coping mechanisms, but these varied between cultures. The majority of SA patients used strategies associa

Alexithymia, Prior Trauma, Alcohol Use, and Sexual Aggression Perpetration: A Cross-Cultural Comparison of a Moderated Mediation Model.

In this study, we examined the relationships between prior trauma, alexithymia, and sexual aggression perpetration among 610 U.S. college students and 107 college students from the Philippines utilizing a cross-sectional retrospective design. We tested a moderated mediation model with alexithymia as the mediator between prior trauma and sexual aggression perpetration, and alcohol use as a moderator of the alexithymia-sexual aggression link. Moreover, given that cultural norms may influence these relationships, we also examined the structural invariance of the proposed moderated mediation model

A cross-cultural comparison of psychological distress among individuals living with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia, and Eldoret, Kenya.

Elevated psychological distress during HIV infection has been consistently correlated with negative HIV-related health outcomes in studies conducted in various regions of the world. This study was conducted to compare the nature and range of psychological distress among HIV-infected individuals who had sought mental health care as part of their HIV care in Kenya and the United States. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was completed by 234 individuals with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and 284 in Eldoret, Kenya. The US-based sample expressed markedly higher levels of psychological distress symp

Understanding bowel cancer screening behaviour and intention across British, Indian, and Indian-Immigrant populations: A qualitative cross-cultural comparison.

Bowel cancer screening reduces mortality, yet uptake remains suboptimal across many populations. While disparities in participation are well documented, limited qualitative research has explored how cultural and healthcare contexts shape attitudes towards screening and preventive healthcare. This study examined beliefs, experiences, and screening-related decision-making among White British individuals, Indian immigrants living in the UK, and individuals residing in India. A cross-cultural qualitative design was employed, with 30 participants taking part in semi-structured interviews. Data were

Cross-Cultural Differences in Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Sensory Responses in Individuals with Autism: A Comparison Between Spain and Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Between 40 and 70% of the population with autism have been found to suffer from functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). The emergence of FGIDs is related to lower quality of life and greater medical resources, somatization and emotional instability. There is a paucity of research available that examines gastrointestinal symptoms and sensory responses in individuals with autism in different countries and cultures. The aim of the present study is to compare the possible differences between gastrointestinal symptoms and sensory reactivity between two samples of individuals with

ASQ-3 developmental outcomes at six months in a Bulgarian infant cohort: a cross-cultural comparison with U.S. norms.

BACKGROUND: Early developmental screening relies heavily on U.S.-standardized normative benchmarks, raising questions about cross-cultural stability and the relative influence of biological vs. contextual factors during infancy. This study examined Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) outcomes at six months in a Bulgarian infant cohort in comparison with established U.S. norms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 155 infants (six months chronological or corrected age) were assessed using the ASQ-3 during routine pediatric visits. One-sample t-tests were used to compare domain scores with
