BackgroundSnakebite envenomation is a global health problem, though rarely encountered in Europe outside captive settings. The Western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is one of the most medically important North American pit vipers, with venom capable of provoking profound coagulation disorders and systemic toxicity. Respiratory complications are exceedingly rare, and the role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in this context has not been previously described.Case presentationWe report the case of a 36-year-old man who sustained a facial bite from a captive Crotalus atrox.

BACKGROUND: The Western diamondback rattlesnake ( Crotalus atrox ) is a medically important venomous snake in the Southwestern United States, injuring humans, and their companion animals. The goals of this investigation were to utilize a rabbit model of subcutaneous envenomation to assess Crotalus atrox venom coagulopathy and determine the efficacy of a ruthenium-containing antivenom (RA) in attenuating it.
METHODS: Sedated New Zealand White rabbits had viscoelastic measurements of whole blood coagulation kinetics obtained from ear artery samples. Crotalus atrox venom (4 mg/kg) was injected s

Accidents involving snakebites constitute a serious public health problem in many regions around the world. However, there are no study about a possible action of snake venom on the reproductive system. Herein we show that Crotalus durissus sp. (Linnaeus) rattlesnake venom (25 μg/kg of body weight) affected chromatin condensation, and increased the number of sperm with abnormal morphology and the sperm count. In conclusion, besides the known hazards of the C. durissus sp. venom to animal health, this study was the first to show its effect also on male germ cells.

Snakes demonstrate a great deal of variation in the amount of venom injected in both predatory and defensive strikes. There is some evidence that snakes can adaptively meter venom dosage. An underlying assumption in the evolution of venom metering is that the production of venom is energetically costly. To date there has been very little research that has quantified the metabolic costs associated with venom production. We used open-flow respirometry to test for significant differences between Prairie Rattlesnakes (Crotalus v. viridis) that had venom extracted and control snakes that did not. A

Chemicals left by organisms moving through the environment are used by other organisms to mediate interspecific interactions. Most studies of chemical eavesdropping focus on prey responding to chemical cues from predators, despite the fact that chemical cues are frequently used by predators as a source of information about prey. Crotalus horridus uses a foraging strategy that is widespread among sedentary predators: the snake chooses a site where it is likely to encounter prey and remains immobile for many hours. I investigated this ambush hunting behavior in captive-raised timber rattlesnakes

An 18-year-old man was bitten on the hand by a snake he believed to be a Southern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri). Within minutes he developed generalized weakness, difficulty breathing, diplopia, dysphagia, and dysphonia. Neurological examination revealed ptosis and decreased motor strength. These symptoms partially improved after administration of Antivenin (Crotalidae) Polyvalent, but the patient continued to have difficulty walking for several days due to weakness. In addition to neurological symptoms, the patient also experienced pain immediately after the bite occurred and

Snake toxins are widely studied owing to their importance in snakebite accidents, a serious public health issue in tropical countries, and their broad therapeutic potential. Isolated fractions from venom produced by snakes of the genus Crotalus sp. present a wide variety of pharmacological uses such as antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor properties, among other therapeutic potentialities. Given the direct effect of this venom on tumor cells, isolation of its compounds is important for the characterization of its anticarcinogenic actions. Crotalus durissus terrificus venom and i

Crotalus durissus rattlesnakes are responsible for the most lethal cases of snakebites in Brazil. Crotalus durissus collilineatus subspecies is related to a great number of accidents in Southeast and Central West regions, but few studies on its venom composition have been carried out to date. In an attempt to describe the transcriptional profile of the C. durissus collilineatus venom gland, we generated a cDNA library and the sequences obtained could be identified by similarity searches on existing databases. Out of 673 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) 489 produced readable sequences comprising

Hemostatic changes were observed in mongrel dogs (N = 5, 18.6 26.7 kg) following and i.v. LD20 (50 microgram/kg) of rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri) venom. Venom produced thrombocytopenia within 5 min and fibrinogen was significantly reduced at 240 min. In addition, the presence of fibrin split products, a positive protamine sulfate test and a decrease in the euglobulin lysis time, suggest that fibrinogenolysis and fibrinolysis are initiated shortly after venom. Prothrombin and partial thromboplastin times were little affected. Examination of bone marrow revealed vacuolization and a redu

Crotalus snakebites induce various toxicological effects, encompassing neurological, myotoxic, and cytotoxic symptoms, with potentially fatal outcomes. Investigating venom toxicity is essential for public health, and developing new tools allows for these effects to be studied more comprehensively. The research goals include the elucidation of the physiological consequences of venom exposure and the assessment of toxicity using animal models. Chicken embryos serve as valuable models for assessing venom toxicity through the chick embryotoxicity screening test (CHEST) and the chick chorioallantoi

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) envenomation is a medical emergency encountered in the Southeastern United States. The venom contains a snake venom thrombin-like enzyme (SVTLE) that is defibrinogenating, causing coagulopathy without effects on platelets in humans. This investigation utilized thrombelastographic methods to document this coagulopathy kinetically on the molecular level in a rabbit model of envenomation via the analyses of whole blood samples without and with platelet inhibition. Subsequently, the administration of a novel ruthenium compound containing site-d

A decerebrate rattlesnake, Crotalus durissus, has previously been used as a model Squamate for cardiovascular studies. It enabled instrumentation for concomitant recordings of diverse variables that showed autonomic responses. However, to validate the preparation and its scope for use, it is necessary to assess how close its cardiovascular variables are to non-decerebrate snakes and the effectiveness of its autonomic responses. Similarly, it is important to analyze its recovery profile after instrumentation and observe if it maintains stability throughout the duration of experimental protocol.

Rattlesnake venoms may be classified according to the presence/absence and relative abundance of the neurotoxic phospholipases A 2 s (PLA 2 s), such as Mojave toxin, and snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs). In Mexico, studies to determine venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus) are limited and little is known about the biological and proteolytic activities in this species. Tissue (34) and venom (29) samples were obtained from C. s. scutulatus from different locations within their distribution in Mexico. Mojave toxin detection was carried out at the genomic (b

From January, 1984 to March, 1999, 31 children under 15 y old (ages 1-14 y, median 8 y) were admitted after being bitten by rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus ssp). One patient was classified as "dry-bite", 3 as mild envenoming, 9 as moderate envenoming and 18 as severe envenoming. Most patients had neuromuscular manifestations, such as palpebral ptosis (27/31), myalgia (23/31) and weakness (20/31). Laboratory tests suggesting rhabdomyolysis included an increase in total blood creatine kinase (CK, 28/29) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, 25/25) levels and myoglobinuria (14/15). The main local signs

In this ultrastructural study we examined skeletal muscle fibres from mice intraperitoneally inoculated with a sublethal dose of Crotalus vegrandis (rattlesnake) venom. The group of mice inoculated presented neurological symptoms characterised by respiratory failure and hind limbs paralysis. Skeletal muscle fibres showed different degrees of alterations. Most of them presented the characteristic pattern of necrosis in progress. Atrophied and hypercontracted fibres were frequently seen. Some atrophied and necrotic fibres showed several nucleoli-like bodies in the nucleus. In the atrophic and hy

Venoms from adult and newborn Central American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus durissus) were compared for lethal, proteolytic, hemorrhagic, myonecrotic, edematigenous and in vitro hemolytic activities. Electrophoretic and immunoelectrophoretic patterns showed some differences between these venoms. Venom from newborn snakes was devoid of hemorrhagic and edematigenous activities, whereas the venom from adult specimens induced these effects. On the other hand, newborn snake venom showed higher lethality and indirect hemolytic activity, and lower proteolytic activity, than venom from adult specim

A case of envenomation by the Mexican lance-headed rattlesnake, Crotalus polystictus, resulted in local swelling and muscle fasciculation, which abated after i.v. antivenin and an area of necrosis healed. A mild thrombocytopenia and hypofibrinogenemia with elevation of fibrin split products was noted.

BACKGROUND: In the late nineties, Bond and Burkhardt described a severe thrombocytopenic phenomenon from envenomation by Crotalus horridus. This thrombocytopenia persisted despite administration of platelets and antivenom. Questions remain regarding the clinical significance and time to resolution of this thrombocytopenia. In addition, as new antivenoms are available in North America, the response to current treatment is not well reported. The purpose of this study is to provide further insight into the approach to treatment of Crotalus horridus envenomation.
METHODS: This is a retrospective

Snakebite envenoming is a serious medical problem in different areas of the world. In Latin America, the major prevalence is due to snakes of the family Viperidae, where rattlesnakes (Crotalus) are included. They produce hemotoxic venom which causes bleeding, tissue degradation and necrosis. Each venom has several enzymatic activities, producing different effects in the envenoming, doing its clinical effects difficult to study. Comparison between venom molecules is also difficult when different techniques are used, and therefore, their identification/characterization using the same methodology
