The association of reflex sympathetic dystrophy in one or more extremities with vertebral crush fracture syndrome is reported in six cases. In two of them the reflex sympathetic dystrophy preceded the vertebral crush fractures. The 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate scintigraphy results of the skeletons of 42 consecutive patients suffering from vertebral collapse and of 30 matched controls without osteoporosis have been evaluated by three independent observers for abnormal uptakes in the extremities. An abnormal radioactive bone tracer uptake in the extremities has been observed in 15 osteoporotics

Eight patients with crush syndrome were treated in our department during the Lebanon War, 1982. They arrived after having been trapped under fallen masonry for 4 to 28 h. They all had injuries of the lower limbs, with neurological deficiency and myoglobinuria. The local and general aspects of the syndrome are presented and discussed and a successful treatment protocol outlined.

From June 1992 to October 1995, 224 patients were operated on carpal tunnel syndrome. We treated 71 male and 153 female patients. During our investigations, we found that one third of the patients suffered from a double crush syndrome. 84% of the patients suffered from one or more predisposing accompanying diseases. In most of them (42%) we found rheumatic diseases, 19% diabetes mellitus, 8% hyperuricaemia, and 6% hypothyreosis. In 33%, we observed a very short history and a bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. According to the preoperative tests, four different groups of patients regarding elect

Traumatic rhabdomyolysis is a systemic manifestation of muscle injury and can occur from various traumatic etiologies, including crush syndrome (CrshS) and compartment syndrome (CS). Although historically described in natural disaster survivors trapped under collapsed structures, the frequency of CrshS has increased in the setting of 'found down' patients from opioid overdoses. Signs and symptoms of the injured limb in CrshS may range from pressure-induced skin changes to neurologic deficits and paralysis. Although its pathophysiology differs from CS, severe injuries may lead to an associated

Crush syndrome (CS), also known as traumatic rhabdomyolysis, is a syndrome with a wide clinical spectrum; it is caused by external compression, which often occurs in earthquakes, wars, and traffic accidents, especially in large-scale disasters. Crush syndrome is the second leading cause of death after direct trauma in earthquakes. A series of clinical complications caused by crush syndrome, including hyperkalemia, myoglobinuria, and, in particular, acute kidney injury (AKI), is the main cause of death in crush syndrome. The early diagnosis of crush syndrome, the correct evaluation of its sever

INTRODUCTION: Primary disasters may result in mass casualty events with serious injuries, including crush injury and crush syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review provides a focused overview of crush injury and crush syndrome for emergency clinicians.
DISCUSSION: Millions of people worldwide annually face natural or human-made disasters, which may lead to mass casualty events and severe medical issues including crush injury and syndrome. Crush injury is due to direct physical trauma and compression of the human body, most commonly involving the lower extremities. It may result in asphyxia

BACKGROUND: Crush trauma to the extremities, even if not involving vital organs, can be life threatening. Crush syndrome, the systemic manifestation of the breakdown of muscle cells with release of contents into the circulation, leads to metabolic derangement and acute kidney injury. Although common in disaster scenarios, emergency physicians also see the syndrome in patients after motor-vehicle collisions and patients "found down" due to intoxication.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this review are to discuss the pathophysiology of crush syndrome, report on prehospital and emergency department

OBJECTIVE: To investigate pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of crush syndrome of chest and arm.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and January 2015, 5 cases of crush syndrome of chest and arm caused by pressing oneself in a coma after CO poisoning or alcoholic intoxication were treated. There were 4 males and 1 female with an average age of 36.7 years (range, 28-46 years). Two patients involved left upper limb and chest, while the other three patients involved right upper limb and chest. The crushed time ranged from 4 to 12 hours (mean, 7 hours). All 5 cases received emergency decompression a

A 48-year-old male with a symptomatic 2:1 atrio-ventricular block and a dual-chamber pacemaker, implanted one year previously, was admitted due to a syncopal episode. Pacemaker malfunction was identified as the cause of syncope. Subclavian crush syndrome was the cause of the pacemaker malfunction. Its incidence, consequences and management are discussed in this report.

Clinicobacteriological examination was carried out in 31 patients with the crush syndrome (CS) and extensive damage to the soft tissues in combination with bone fractures complicated by wound infection. Inadequate surgical treatment in the early periods after the trauma (complete closure of the wound, making small incisions of the involved skin and subcutaneous fat) is particularly hazardous in such cases because it leads to the development of severe wound infection. This disease is marked by a complex polymicrobial structure of the causative agents, massive dissemination of aerobic and opport

BACKGROUND: Double crush syndrome (DCS) of the ulnar nerve, including cubital tunnel syndrome with ulnar tunnel syndrome (UTS), is uncommon. This study compares the postoperative outcomes of patients with isolated ulnar tunnel syndrome versus those with double crush syndrome of the elbow and ulnar tunnel.
METHODS: This study enrolled 22 patients: 12 underwent cubital tunnel surgery and ulnar tunnel surgery (double crush group); and 10 underwent only ulnar tunnel decompression (isolated UTS group). Postoperative effect evaluation of patients in both groups after at least 2.6 years (mean, 5.1 y

Double crush syndrome (DCS), as it is classically defined, is a clinical condition composed of neurological dysfunction due to compressive pathology at multiple sites along a single peripheral nerve. The traditional definition of DCS is narrow in scope because many systemic pathologic processes, such as diabetes mellitus, drug-induced neuropathy, vascular disease and autoimmune neuronal damage, can have deleterious effects on nerve function. Multifocal neuropathy is a more appropriate term describing the multiple etiologies (including compressive lesions) that may synergistically contribute to

Upton and McComas first proposed the existence of the "double crush syndrome." Their hypothesis was that neural function could be impaired when single axons, having been compressed in one region, become especially susceptible to damage in another. A case report of a man with both cervical radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome, i.e., "double crush syndrome" is presented. Conservative management consisting of chiropractic manipulative therapy as well as ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation, traction and a wrist splint is outlined. The experimental basis, clinical evidence, etiology, sympt

The hypothesis, "double crush syndrome (DCS)", is that neural function could be impaired when single axons, having been compressed in one region, become especially susceptible to damage in another. We retrospectively review our surgical cases with both cervical lesion and carpal tunnel syndrome, i.e., DCS. From January 2001 to January 2005, we have treated 7 patients (Male-4, Female-3, average age-59.9 years old) under the diagnosis of DCS. Cervical lesions were cervical spondylosis in 4 and cervical narrow canal in 3 patients. Peripheral entrapment neuropathy was carpal tunnel syndrome in all

Earthquakes are among the most devastating natural disasters, often resulting in significant loss of life and widespread injuries. Crush syndrome (CS), a systemic manifestation of muscle injury due to prolonged compression, is a critical condition commonly seen in earthquake survivors. This study examines the clinical outcomes of patients with crush syndrome (CS) and acute kidney injury (AKI) following the 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake in Turkey. Of the 321 survivors hospitalized, 143 required intensive care. The study found that children were more likely to develop CS, while adults had longer
