The structure of the aesthetascs has been investigated in the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (larvae and juveniles), the opossum shrimp Neomysis integer, the euphausid Meganyctiphanes, and in the water-fleas Daphnia magna and D. longispina. The aesthetascs, that are thought to represent olfactory receptors, exhibit a considerable structural variation, ranging from the well known aesthetascs of higher crustaceans (lobster, crab, crayfish) to the corresponding sensilla found in the water-fleas and the males of opossum shrimps. The two following morphological characteristics of the aesthetascs a

When in genetic females external male characters differentiate, the phenomenon is called "male pseudohermaphroditism." This male differentiation occurs in terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, suborder Oniscoidea) and sometimes involves only some epithelial areas (gynandromorphous mosaics). It is not induced by male hormones or by abnormal ovary function. This intersexuality is transmitted maternally (by the intersex females) or paternally (by the brothers of intersex females) to between 30% and 60% of their offspring. Although it occurs at 20 degrees C, the male differentiation disappears when bree

With 53 formally described species, the genus Cypretta is one of the most common freshwater ostracod genera in the world. It has a mainly circumtropical distribution. The type species, Cypretta tenuicauda (Vávra, 1895), was described from Zanzibar (Africa) in a superficial way. Therefore, the morphology and identity of this species and of the genus remained problematic until today. Here, we redescribe Cypretta tenuicauda from the original type material and discuss the morphology of the species and the diagnosis of the genus. The species is characterized by the presence of anterior marginal sep

Despite the co-occurrence of metals in aquatic environments, their joint effects are generally not considered during risk assessments. Data on the combined effects of zinc (Zn) and aluminum (Al) on aquatic animals are extremely scarce in the literature, although these metals are commonly used in domestic and industrial activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mixtures of Zn and Al on the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. We evaluated immobility (at 48 h) and ingestion rates (at 24 h). We also performed chronic toxicity tests for single metals. The environmental risks

Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. H

OBJECTIVE: To test Candonocypris novaezelandiae (Baird) (C. novaezelandiae), sub-class Ostracoda, obtained from the Nile, Egypt for its predatory activity on snail, Biomphalaria alexandrina (B. alexandrina), intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) and on the free-living larval stages of this parasite (miracidia and cercariae).
METHODS: The predatory activity of C. novaezelandiae was determined on B. alexandrina snail (several densities of eggs, newly hatched and juveniles). This activity was also determined on S. mansoni miracidia and cercariae using different volumes of water a

Mystacocarida is a species-poor group of minute crustaceans with unclear phylogenetic affinities. Previous studies have highlighted the putative "primitiveness" of several mystacocarid features, including the architecture of the nervous system. Recent studies on arthropod neuroarchitecture have provided a wealth of characters valuable for phylogenetic reconstructions. To permit and facilitate comparison with these data, we used immunohistochemical labeling (against acetylated alpha-tubulin, serotonin and FMRFamide) on the mystacocarid Derocheilocaris remanei, analyzing it with confocal laser-s

The Bicornucythere bisanensis complex is a species group of trachyleberidid Ostracoda found in shallow-sea sediments along the margin of the East China Sea, which contains three members, namely Bicornucythere bisanensis, B. misumiensis, and Form G. In this study, we analyzed the ontogenetic changes in carapace morphology of B. bisanensis and Form G from the East China Sea and compared them with the specimens of the B. bisanensis complex from the South Yellow Sea, the Leizhou Peninsula, and those in the published literatures, in order to reveal the similarities and differences between the three

The brachyuran fauna of the large southern Philippine island of Mindanao is poorly known, with only a few freshwater and estuarine crab species described or recorded in the last 30 years. Renewed interest in crab biodiversity has led to recent, small-scale surveys (2016-2019) of freshwater and estuarine habitats in various localities in Mindanao, which have yielded a good diversity of brachyuran crabs. As a result, a total of 26 species of brachyuran crab, representing 6 families (Hymenosomatidae, Oziidae, Gecarcinidae, Sesarmidae, Varunidae, and Ocypodidae), are reported here. Of these, 15 sp

The activity of the 14 neuron network which organizes the pyloric motor rhythm in the stomatogastric ganglion of the lobster, Homarus gammarus, is controlled by neuromodulatory inputs which have been described as having mainly 'permissive' effects. By contrast, here we identify a neuron, the pyloric suppressor (PS) neuron which exerts a 'suppressive' effect on the pyloric activity. We show that PS neuron discharge can terminate in a long-lasting manner, spontaneous pyloric rhythmic activity. Its effect results from a direct suppression of the endogenous ability of the pyloric pacemaker neurons

The Atyidae is a diverse and old freshwater shrimp family distributed across all continents bar Antarctica. It is particularly speciose in the Indo-Pacific, the domain of its most diverse group, the so-called Caridella group, which includes the largest and taxonomically challenging genus, Caridina. By using a time-calibrated genomic framework, we reconstructed the biogeographic history of the Caridella group. We show that although their evolution is intimately tied to the geological history of the Tethys Ocean, a slow periodic expansion westward provided multiple invasions of Africa. The knowl

The morphology of juveniles of Mithraculus forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, raised in the laboratory, is described. The larvae were obtained from ovigerous females collected in the wild, maintained in the rearing system for culture of crabs (400 L). A total of 229 larvae (zoea I), from 7 females were distributed in lots of 20 larvae kept in glass flasks (500 ml), with seawater circulation and temperature and salinity constants, which were checked daily for molts or deaths. After the larvae reached the juvenile stage, exuviae and dead specimens were deposited in a scientific collection. We analy

Removal of deposited eggs could be a useful control strategy for the damaging fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus, but focused control requires knowledge of egg-laying patterns. Here, we investigated diel changes in the egg-laying behaviour of a natural population of A. foliaceus. Data were collected from 17-28 May 2004. Days were divided into 3 time periods: 06:00-14:00, 14:00-22:00 and 22:00-06:00 h. Significantly more egg clutches were laid from 06:00-14:00 h than during the other 2 time periods, which were not significantly different from each other. Significantly more egg clutches per hou

Three mysid species showed differences in chemosensory feeding as judged from stereotyped food capturing responses to dissolved mixtures of feeding stimulant (either betaine-HCl or glycine) and suppressant (ammonium). The strongest responses were to 50:50 mixtures of both betaine-ammonium and glycine-ammonium solutions. In general, the response curve to the different mixtures tested was bell-shaped. Anisomysis mixta australis only showed the normal curve in response to the glycine-ammonium mixture. The platykurtic curve for Tenagomysis tasmaniae suggests a less optimal response to the betaine-

Adverse reactions to ingested crustacea are common and may be life-threatening. We studied 14 individuals with histories of such reactions to shrimp by immediate skin tests and RAST with extracts of shrimp, crab, crayfish, and lobster. Nine of these subjects (8/8 atopics and 1/6 nonatopics) had positive immediate skin tests (wheal greater than or equal to 2 mm) and RAST (ratios greater than 3.0) to shrimp. Their skin tests and RAST ratios to the other crustacea were also frequently positive even, in several cases, in the absence of prior exposure. In contrast, only 1/10 volunteers with no hist

Two new species of pedunculate cirripede are described from lower Campanian basinal limestones of Höver and Misburg (Hannover area), northern Germany. These are the myolepadid Bosquetlepas schneiderisp. nov. and the large cretiscalpellid Jagtscalpellum kaeckei sp. nov. The occurrence of Bosquetlepas in basinal limestones is remarkable, as the genus was largely confined to shallow-marine and coastal habitats.

A new microsporidian species was described from the hypoderm of Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum sampled from a eutrophic water body of Changshu city, Jiangsu province, China. Infected daphnia generally appeared opaque due to numerous spores accumulated in the host integument. The earliest developmental stages observed were uninucleate meronts which were in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmodia developed into uninucleate sporoblasts by plasmotomy. Mature spores were ovoid and monokaryotic, measuring 4.65 ± 0.21 (4.28-5.24) µm long and 2.49 ± 0.15 (2.12-

The gastric mill is a prominent structure in the digestive system of brachyuran crabs, consisting of a median tooth plate and a pair of lateral tooth plates. Among crab species that are deposit feeders, the morphology and size of the gastric mill teeth are correlated with the preferred substrate types and food spectrum. In this study, we provide a detailed description of the morphology of the median and lateral teeth of the gastric mills in eight species of dotillid crabs from Indonesia, and compare them in relation to habitat preferences and molecular phylogeny.
