OVATE family gene CmOFP6-19b negatively regulates fruit size in melon (Cucumis melo L.).

OVATE family proteins (OFPs) constitute a class of transcription factors regulating various developmental processes in plants. Nevertheless, their precise regulatory functions in melon (Cucumis melo L.) fruit development remain elusive. In this study, we identified expression profiling of melon OFP genes and revealed the molecular function of CmOFP6-19b gene mediating fruit size variation. Quantitative analysis revealed predominant CmOFP expression in reproductive organs (female/male flowers and ovaries), with distinct differential expression patterns observed among paralogs. Through melon gen

Signaling function of NH4+ in the activation of Fe-deficiency response in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

NH4+ is necessary for full functionality of reduction-based Fe deficiency response in plants. Nitrogen (N) is present in soil mainly as nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). Although the significance of a balanced supply of NO3- and NH4+ for optimal growth has been generally accepted, its importance for iron (Fe) acquisition has not been sufficiently investigated. In this work, hydroponically grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Maximus) plants were supplied with NO3- as the sole N source under -Fe conditions. Upon the appearance of chlorosis, plants were supplemented with 2 mM NH4Cl by roots o

CmERF1 acts as a positive regulator of fruits and leaves growth in melon (Cucumis melo L.).

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is an important horticultural and economic crop. ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR1 (ERF1) plays an important role in regulating plant development, and the resistance to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, developmental biology, molecular biology and biochemical assays were performed to explore the biological function of CmERF1 in melon. Abundant transcripts of CmERF1 were found in ovary at green-yellow bud (GYB) and rapid enlargement (ORE) stages. In CmERF1 promoter, the cis-regulatory elements for indoleacetic acid (IAA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), salicylic aci

Bioactivity-guided isolation of aurone derivatives with hepatoprotective activities from the fruits of Cucumis bisexualis.

Bioactivity-guided phytochemical investigation of Cucumis bisexualis has led to the isolation of three new coumarin-aurone heterodimers (1-3), along with six aurone derivatives (4-9) were isolated from C. bisexualis for the first time. Their structures were determined by their extensive spectroscopic data and comparison with the values reported in the references. All isolated compounds (1-9) were evaluated for their hepatoprotective activities on human L-O2 cells, which compared with positive control of Bifendatatum. Among them, compounds 1, 2, and 7 exhibited moderate hepatoprotective activit

Impact of a snail pellet on the phytoavailability of different metals to cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

FePO4 based molluscicides (snail pellets) also contain a chelating agent. The influence of the chelating agent, which is intrinsically present in the molluscicide, on the phytoavailability of other metals present in the growth medium was investigated in the present study. Cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus) were grown in a hydroponic nutrient solution and exposed for one week to different metals in combination with a chelating agent containing molluscicide. Oven dried roots and shoots of plants were HNO 3/H2O2 microwave digested and analysed regarding total Fe, stable isotopic (54)Fe, Cd, Pb, an

Integrated omics reveal phenylpropanoid biosynthesis as a key defense pathway against Meloidogyne incognita in Cucumis metuliferus.

The southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita, M. incognita) poses a severe threat to cucurbit production, yet no resistant germplasm exists among cultivated species. Although Cucumis metuliferus (C. metuliferus), a wild Cucurbitaceae species, exhibits resistance to M. incognita and prior transcriptomic studies have identified key responsive genes and signaling pathways, an integrated understanding of the dynamic transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming is still lacking. Here, an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis was performed on resistant (CM064) and susceptible (

Gamma-aminobutyric acid enhances tolerance to iron deficiency by stimulating auxin signaling in cucumber (Cucumis sativusL.).

Iron deficiency severely affects crop yield and quality. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays a vital role in plant responses to multifarious stresses. However, the role of GABA in Fe deficiency responses and the potential mechanisms remain largely unknown in cucumber. Here, we found that Fe deficiency raised the GABA levels in leaves and roots of cucumber. To probe the role of GABA in Fe deficiency, the seedlings were subjected to five levels of GABA concentrations (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mmol L-1) for 7 days under Fe deficiency. The results demonstrated that 20 mM GABA in alleviating the Fe def

Facilitating Seed Iron Uptake through Amine-Epoxide Microgels: A Novel Approach to Enhance Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) Germination.

Enhancing the initial stages of plant growth by using polymeric gels for seed priming presents a significant challenge. This study aimed to investigate a microgel derived from polyetheramine-poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) and a bisepoxide (referred to as micro-PPO) as a promising alternative to optimize the seed germination process. The micro-PPO integrated with an iron micronutrient showed a positive impact on seed germination compared with control (Fe solutions) in which the root length yield improved up to 39%. Therefore, the element map by synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence shows that the F

Fine mapping of a novel QTL CsFSG1 for fruit skin gloss in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important vegetable crop that is popular with many people. Peel gloss is a highly valued external quality trait that affects the market value of cucumbers, and it directly influences the purchasing psychology of consumers. Nonetheless, the candidate genes and underlying genetic mechanism for this important cucumber trait are not well understood. In this study, we successfully mapped a fruit skin gloss QTL interval to chromosome 3 (26.04-26.14 Mb) using BSA and GWAS methods. Among the eleven candidate genes in the interval, the cytochrome P450 family gene CsC

Metabolic Reprogramming in Cucumis metuliferus Roots and Rhizosphere Identifies Candidate Metabolites That Reduce Meloidogyne incognita Infection.

Root-knot nematode causes severe yield losses in cucumber and other cucurbits. The wild relative Cucumis metuliferus exhibits strong resistance, but the metabolic basis of this resistance and the potential of resistance-associated metabolites to protect susceptible crops remains poorly understood. Here, we compared host status, phenolic content, and untargeted metabolomes of roots and rhizosphere soils of C. metuliferus and C. sativus upon Meloidogyne incognita infection. C. metuliferus showed delayed nematode development, fewer galls, and a lower reproduction factor compared with C. sativus,
