2-Hydroxymelatonin induced nutritional orchestration in Cucumis sativus under cadmium toxicity: modulation of non-enzymatic antioxidants and gene expression.

2-Hydroxymelatonin (2-OHMT) is an important metabolite produced through melatonin interaction with oxygenated compounds. 2-OHMT pretreated seeds (50 µM, 100 µM, and 150 µM) were grown in soil contaminated with 50 mg kg-1 cadmium. Cadmium imposed stress reduced seed germination, growth, biomass production, and chlorophyll (Chl) content in Cucumis sativus seedlings. 2-OHMT application emphatically revamped germination, shoot length, root length, and plant biomass production. The 2-OHMT pretreatment modulated expression levels of plasma membrane H+-ATPase genes of C. sativus including CsHA2, CsHA

Upregulation of Caspase-3 and TNF-α in a rat model of cerebellar motor disorder: role of Cucumis sativus (cucumber).

Cerebellar Motor Disorders (CMDs) are characterized by unsteady gait and uncoordinated movements. Reports indicate that CMDs are caused by congenital malformations, hereditary ataxia, and heavy metal exposure, such as Lead. The antioxidant-rich nature of plants, such as Cucumis sativus (Cucumber), has been well-documented. Accordingly, this study investigated the protective activity of aqueous Cucumis sativus fruit extract (CS) in a lead acetate (Pb) rat model of CMD. Forty Wistar rats (n = 8) were randomly assigned into five groups and treated for twenty-eight days as follows: Group A served

Variation in herbivory-induced volatiles among cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) varieties has consequences for the attraction of carnivorous natural enemies.

In response to herbivory by arthropods, plants emit herbivory-induced volatiles that attract carnivorous enemies of the inducing herbivores. Here, we compared the attractiveness of eight cucumber varieties (Cucumis sativus L.) to Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites after infestation of the plants with herbivorous spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) under greenhouse conditions. Attractiveness differed considerably, with the most attractive variety attracting twice as many predators as the least attractive variety. Chemical analysis of the volatiles released by the infested plants revealed si

Comparative Effects of High-Molecular-Weight Chitosan and Chitosan Oligosaccharide Lactate on Metabolic Adjustment and Salinity Tolerance in Cucumis sativus L.

Salinity is one of the most harmful abiotic factors limiting crop productivity. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide biostimulant able to alleviate salt stress, but its efficiency depends on its physicochemical properties, which remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to determine whether two chemically distinct forms of chitosan, i.e., high-molecular-weight chitosan (ChT) and chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChL), differentially mitigate the adverse effects of NaCl-induced salinity in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown hydroponically under control conditions o

The inoculation with Pseudomonas simiae WCS417 strain promotes growth and the induction of iron-deficiency responses in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

Inoculation with Pseudomonas simiae WCS417 improves cucumber growth under Fe deficiency conditions and induces iron-deficiency responses, making it a promising candidate for sustainable biofertilization strategies in dicot plants. Iron (Fe) deficiency poses a significant agronomic challenge in calcareous soils, particularly affecting dicot plants. Conventional production methods rely heavily on high-yielding varieties and the application of substantial amounts of agrochemicals, leading to considerable environmental concerns. In this context, leveraging the potential of beneficial rhizosphere m

Expression profiling of the gibberellin 2-oxidase gene CsGA2ox2 (Cucumis sativus L.) reveals stage- and tissue-specific transcript accumulation during fruit development.

BACKGROUND: Gibberellins (GAs) regulate fruit set and expansion, and their endogenous levels are controlled in part through catabolic inactivation. GA2ox enzymes convert bioactive GAs into inactive forms, but the expression of GA2ox genes during cucumber fruit development has not been characterised in a tissue-resolved manner. METHODS: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) '9930' fruit were sampled at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pollination. The inner fleshy tissue (pulp) and the outer fruit wall (pericarp) were separated, and CsGA2ox2 transcript abundance was quantified by quantitative real-time

β-Aminobutyric Acid and Powdery Mildew Infection Enhanced the Activation of Defense-Related Genes and Salicylic Acid in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Powdery mildew disease, caused by Sphaerotheca fusca, is a major disease affecting cucumbers cultivated in greenhouses. This study was conducted to find defense genes induced by β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) and powdery mildew in cucumber. Disease severities of 25% and 5% were exhibited by the 2000 and 5000 mg/L BABA-treated cucumber, respectively. BABA did not affect the spore germination of the powdery mildew pathogen, showing that BABA is not an antifungal agent against the pathogen. In quantitative real-time PCR analysis, BABA-treated cucumber upregulated the transcriptional levels of the def

The Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 positively regulates Cucumis sativus resistance against Bemisia tabaci by activating the plant defense system.

BACKGROUND: Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) are globally invasive agricultural pests that currently lack effective control measures. Cys2/His2-type zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) are ubiquitous transcription factors that play critical roles in regulating plant resistance to various stresses. However, it remains unclear whether these proteins modulate plant defense responses during whitefly infestation. This study investigates the function and mechanisms of the Cys2/His2-type zinc finger transcription factor CsZAT10 in regulating cucumber resistance to B. tabaci. RESULTS: CsZAT10 contains two zinc fi

Glutathione is required for nitric oxide-induced chilling tolerance by synergistically regulating antioxidant system, polyamine synthesis, and mitochondrial function in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

In this paper, we discussed the physiological mechanism of enhanced chilling tolerance with combined treatment of nitric oxide (NO) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in cucumber seedlings. With prolonged low temperature (10 °C/6 °C), oxidative stress improved, which was manifested as an increase the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA), causing cell membrane damage, particularly after 48 h of chilling stress. Exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO donor) enhanced the activity of nitric oxide synthase NOS-like, the contents of GSH and polyamines (PAs), and the cellular redox state, t
