[Processing mechanism of social cues in faces].

The purpose of the present paper was to review the processing mechanisms of social cues in faces. We summarized researches relative to social cues in faces and discussed the processing mechanism of these cues from the aspects of facial expression, facial attractiveness, gaze and face direction, and lipreading. First, we discussed the general neural mechanism of face information processing and summarized the functions of face areas in the fusiform gyrus, posterior superior temporal sulcus and inferior occipital gyrus. Next, the neural mechanism of emotional face perception was discussed. The pr

Interpreting ambiguous social cues in unpredictable contexts.

Unpredictable environments can be anxiety-provoking and elicit exaggerated emotional responses to aversive stimuli. Even neutral stimuli, when presented in an unpredictable fashion, prime anxiety-like behavior and elicit heightened amygdala activity. The amygdala plays a key role in initiating responses to biologically relevant information, such as facial expressions of emotion. While some expressions clearly signal negative (anger) or positive (happy) events, other expressions (e.g. surprise) are more ambiguous in that they can predict either valence, depending on the context. Here, we sought

Incidental fear cues increase monetary loss aversion.

In many everyday decisions, people exhibit loss aversion-a greater sensitivity to losses relative to gains of equal size. Loss aversion is thought to be (at least partly) mediated by emotional--in particular, fear-related--processes. Decision research has shown that even incidental emotions, which are unrelated to the decision at hand, can influence decision making. The effect of incidental fear on loss aversion, however, is thus far unclear. In two studies, we experimentally investigated how incidental fear cues, presented during (Study 1) or before (Study 2) choices to accept or reject mixed

Reactivity to interoceptive cues in nocturnal panic.

In this study, patients with panic disorder (PD) who suffered nocturnal panic (NP) attacks were compared with PD patients who never experienced NP attacks and healthy controls. Three tasks were chosen to evaluate attention to cardiac cues, reactivity to induction of respiratory cues, and reactivity to relaxation cues. Relative to healthy controls, PD groups reported more fear of all three tasks and showed more physiological arousal in response to the hyperventilation task. The only task on which the two PD groups differed was the relaxation task, where nocturnal panickers were significantly mo

Phentermine+fenfluramine produce cocaine-like discriminative cues.

Drug discrimination studies were conducted in six male Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate the interoceptive cues produced by 10 mg/kg cocaine in an effort to investigate if there is stimulus generalization to phentermine or phentermine + fenfluramine. Once having reached criterion performance, these rats were tested with lower doses of cocaine and generated a typical dose-response curve allowing for calculation of an ED50 value: 2.798 mg/kg. Testing of phentermine in doses of 1.25-5.0 mg/kg indicated generalization with the highest dose producing 80% cocaine-appropriate responding and

The effects of pre-cue alpha and cueing strategy on age-related deficits in post-cue alpha activity and target processing during visual spatial attention.

Electroencephalography alpha-band (8-13 Hz) activity during visual spatial attention declines in normal aging. We recently reported the impacts of pre-cue baseline alpha and cueing strategy on post-cue anticipatory alpha activity and target processing in visual spatial attention (Wang et al., Cerebral Cortex, 2023). However, whether these factors affected aging effects remains unaddressed. We investigated this issue in two independent experiments (n = 114) with different cueing strategies (instructional vs. probabilistic). When median-splitting young adults (YA) by their pre-cue alpha power, w

Alcohol Cues Invigorate Aversion-Resistant Alcohol Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is characterized by continued alcohol use despite negative consequences, also known as aversion-resistant drinking. Alcohol related cues can invigorate motivation to seek and consume alcohol. It is currently unknown whether alcohol related cues can invigorate drinking despite negative consequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Long-Evans rats were trained in a discriminative stimulus (DS) task with cues predicting the available of alcohol reward. They were then tested in the task for aversion-resistant drinking by measuring consumption of alcohol adulterated with in

Detection of Environmental Cues by TAAR Family.

The trace amine-associated receptor (TAAR) family is a chemosensory system dedicated to the detection of volatile and water-soluble amine odorants. Unlike canonical odorant receptors (ORs), TAARs function as highly tuned evolutionary sensors that assign innate behavioral valence to critical ecological cues. In this chapter, we examine how TAARs decode the environmental amine landscape to drive survival and social behaviors, focusing on predator avoidance triggered by 2-phenylethylamine, as well as conspecific attraction and social hierarchy formation mediated by trimethylamine. We trace the bi

Temporal dynamics of coarticulatory cues to prediction.

The temporal dynamics of the perception of within-word coarticulatory cues remain a subject of ongoing debate in speech perception research. This behavioral gating study sheds light on the unfolding predictive use of anticipatory coarticulation in onset fricatives. Word onset fricatives (/f/ and /s/) were split into four gates (15, 35, 75 and 135 milliseconds). Listeners made a forced choice about the word they were listening to, based on the stimulus gates. The results showed fast predictive use of coarticulatory lip rounding during /s/ word onsets, as early as 15 ms from word onset. For /f/

Molecular and Mechanical Cues for Somite Periodicity.

Somitogenesis refers to the segmentation of the paraxial mesoderm, a tissue located on the back of the embryo, into regularly spaced and sized pieces, i.e., the somites. This periodicity is important to assure, for example, the formation of a functional vertebral column. Prevailing models of somitogenesis are based on the existence of a gene regulatory network capable of generating a striped pattern of gene expression, which is subsequently translated into periodic tissue boundaries. An alternative view is that the pre-pattern that guides somitogenesis is not chemical, but of a mechanical orig

Infant Clinical Pain Assessment: Core Behavioral Cues.

UNLABELLED: Diverse behavioral cues have been proposed to be useful cues in infant pain assessment, but there is a paucity of evidence on the basis of formal psychometric evaluation to establish their validity for this purpose. We aimed to examine 2 widely used coding systems, the Neonatal Facial Coding System (NFCS) and the Modified Behavior Pain Scale (MBPS), by examining their factor structures with confirmatory factor analysis using a large archival data set. The results indicated that an item-reduced NFCS scale with 3 items produced a 1-factor pain model that maintained the good psychomet

Cognitive cues and visually induced motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The importance of cognitive processing of orientation cues in visually induced motion sickness and vection is often overlooked. Upright versus inverted visual scenes containing cues of different levels of salience were compared. METHODS: Panoramic scenes of 360 degrees were projected in the visual equivalent to the nauseogenic situation of rotating about an axis tilted from the vertical with a field of view of 84 degrees rotating at 0.2 Hz (72 degrees x s(-1)). Exposures were for 10 min or until moderate nausea developed. The design was counterbalanced repeated measures. Pilot Stu

Time-to-Collision Estimation With Age-Related Macular Degeneration Using Visual and Auditory Cues: Which Cues are Most Important?

We measured time-to-collision (TTC) judgments from participants with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and normal vision (NV) controls, with an audiovisual virtual reality system that simulated vehicles approaching in a 3D traffic environment. The vehicle was presented visually only, aurally only, or both simultaneously, allowing us to determine the relative importance of visual and auditory cues with psychophysical reverse correlation. Results indicated that TTC judgments were based on both auditory and visual cues in the AMD and NV groups; the AMD group relied, at least in part, on the

Odor is more effective than a visual cue or a verbal cue for the recovery of autobiographical memories in AD.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with an impairment of autobiographical memories, leading to the production of nonspecific memories. Recent research has demonstrated that odor can serve as a powerful cue for the retrieval of autobiographical memories in AD. Moreover, studies conducted in young adults have showed that odor-evoked autobiographical memories are evoked with more details compared with memories triggered by other sensory modalities. Building on the latter research, we compared specificity, subjective experience, emotional characteristics and retrieval time of autobiographical

Nipping cue reactivity in the bud: baclofen prevents limbic activation elicited by subliminal drug cues.

Relapse is a widely recognized and difficult to treat feature of the addictions. Substantial evidence implicates cue-triggered activation of the mesolimbic dopamine system as an important contributing factor. Even drug cues presented outside of conscious awareness (i.e., subliminally) produce robust activation within this circuitry, indicating the sensitivity and vulnerability of the brain to potentially problematic reward signals. Because pharmacological agents that prevent these early cue-induced responses could play an important role in relapse prevention, we examined whether baclofen-a GAB
