Bigotry and the human-animal divide: (Dis)belief in human evolution and bigoted attitudes across different cultures.

The current investigation tested if people's basic belief in the notion that human beings have developed from other animals (i.e., belief in evolution) can predict human-to-human prejudice and intergroup hostility. Using data from the American General Social Survey and Pew Research Center (Studies 1-4), and from three online samples (Studies 5, 7, 8) we tested this hypothesis across 45 countries, in diverse populations and religious settings, across time, in nationally representative data (N = 60,703), and with more comprehensive measures in online crowdsourced data (N = 2,846). Sickle-cell trait in human biological and cultural evolution. Development of agriculture causing increased malaria is bound to gene-pool changes causing malaria reduction.

The particular agricultural adaptation we have been considering is the ultimate determinant of the presence of malaria parasites in the intracellular environment of the human red blood cell. This change in the cellular environment is deleterious for normal individuals, but individuals with the sickle-cell gene are capable of changing their red-cell environment so that intense parasitism never develops. Normal individuals suffer higher mortality rates and lower fertility rates in a malarious environment than individuals with the sickle-cell trait do, so the latter contribute proportionately mor

Metagenomics of culture isolates and insect tissue illuminate the evolution of Wolbachia, Rickettsia and Bartonella symbionts in Ctenocephalides spp. fleas.

While fleas are often perceived simply as a biting nuisance and a cause of allergic dermatitis, they represent important disease vectors worldwide, especially for bacterial zoonoses such as plague (transmitted by rodent fleas) and some of the rickettsioses and bartonelloses. The cosmopolitan cat (Ctenocephalides felis) and dog (Ctenocephalides canis) fleas, as well as Ctenocephalides orientis (restricted to tropical and subtropical Asia), breed in human dwellings and are vectors of cat-scratch fever (caused by Bartonella spp.) and Rickettsia spp., including Rickettsia felis (agent of fle

Trichloroethene dechlorination and H2 evolution are alternative biological pathways of electric charge utilization by a dechlorinating culture in a bioelectrochemical system.

Recently, the proof-of-principle of an innovative bioelectrochemical process fortrichloroethene (TCE) bioremediation was presented. In this newly developed process, a solid-state electrode polarized to -450 mV (vs SHE), in the presence of a low-potential redox mediator (methyl viologen), is employed as an electron donor for the microbial reductive dechlorination of TCE to lower or nonchlorinated end products. In the present study, we investigated the influence of methyl viologen and TCE concentrations on process performance. Using a highly enriched hydrogenotrophic dechlorinating culture, as a

The impact of excitotoxic blockade on the evolution of injury following combined mechanical and hypoxic insults in primary rat neuronal culture.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) involves alterations in neuronal physiology, often complicated by secondary hypoxic or hypotensive events. Excitotoxicity is an important process induced in both TBI and hypoxic or ischemic insults to the brain. We investigated two hypotheses: (1) excitotoxicity is more prominent following combined mechanical and hypoxic injury than either alone; (2) both AMPA and NMDA receptor activation mediate combined mechanical and hypoxic injury. Media in primary mixed neuronal cultures were replaced with conditioned media containing MK801 (NMDA antagonist) and/or NBQX (AMPA/

Comprehensive analyses of a large human gut Bacteroidales culture collection reveal species and strain level diversity and evolution.

Species of the Bacteroidales order are among the most abundant and stable bacterial members of the human gut microbiome with diverse impacts on human health. While Bacteroidales strains and species are genomically and functionally diverse, order-wide comparative analyses are lacking. We cultured and sequenced the genomes of 408 Bacteroidales isolates from healthy human donors representing nine genera and 35 species and performed comparative genomic, gene-specific, mobile gene, and metabolomic analyses. Families, genera, and species could be grouped based on many distinctive features. However,

Evolution of a cell culture-derived genotype 1a hepatitis C virus (H77S.2) during persistent infection with chronic hepatitis in a chimpanzee.

UNLABELLED: Persistent infection is a key feature of hepatitis C virus (HCV). However, chimpanzee infections with cell culture-derived viruses (JFH1 or related chimeric viruses that replicate efficiently in cell culture) have been limited to acute-transient infections with no pathogenicity. Here, we report persistent infection with chronic hepatitis in a chimpanzee challenged with cell culture-derived genotype 1a virus (H77S.2) containing 6 cell culture-adaptive mutations. Following acute-transient infection with a chimeric H77/JFH1 virus (HJ3-5), intravenous (i.v.) challenge with 10(6) FFU H7

Volatile evolutions during solid-state fermentation of oats by mono- and co-cultures: A Flavoromic approach using classical chemometric and machine learning techniques.

While solid-state fermentation (SSF) can enhance the bioactive potential of oats, the temporal dynamics of volatile compound formation, particularly in mixed microbial systems, remain poorly characterized. Such volatiles contribute not only to sensory attributes but also reflect underlying metabolic interactions during fermentation. This study investigated volatile evolution in oat SSF with Rhizopus oligosporus in mono-culture and co-culture with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum over 120 h. Fifty-five volatile compounds spanning ten chemical classes were identified. With the exception of aldehyde

Comparative virulence and evolution analysis of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) isolated from cultured Oncorhynchus mykiss in three different regions of China.

During the period of 2021-2023, infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) was investigated on Oncorhynchus mykiss in the Shandong (SD), Chongqing (CQ) and Yunnan (YN) regions of China. Comparatively, there were more serious clinical signs in the diseased fishes of SD than these of YN and CQ. On the whole, tissue distribution showed that kidney and spleen have high virus loads in the diseased fishes of three regions. In SD, the golden trouts were more susceptible to IHNV than rainbow trouts. Ultrastructural analysis of YN sample showed that the bullet-shaped virions located in the intercel

Clonal evolutions during long-term cultures of bone marrow from de novo acute myeloid leukaemia with trilineage myelodysplasia and with myelodysplastic remission marrow.

We previously established a long-term bone marrow culture (LTBMC) system in which novel abnormal karyotypes could emerge in vitro prior to the appearance of the same karyotypes in vivo in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We extended our study to examine whether acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) transformed from MDS (MDS/AML) and de novo AML with trilineage myelodysplasia (AML/TMDS) show clonal evolution in LTBMC similar to that of typical AML or MDS. We also analysed the cytogenetic changes in cultures with bone marrows from AML with myelodysplastic remission marrow (AML/MRM) as well

Cell Culture Evolution of a Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1)/Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) UL34/ORF24 Chimeric Virus Reveals Novel Functions for HSV Genes in Capsid Nuclear Egress.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are both members of the alphaherpesvirus subfamily but belong to different genera. Substitution of the HSV-1 UL34 coding sequence with that of its VZV homolog, open reading frame 24 (ORF24), results in a virus that has defects in viral growth, spread, capsid egress, and nuclear lamina disruption very similar to those seen in a UL34-null virus despite normal interaction between ORF24 protein and HSV pUL31 and proper localization of the nuclear egress complex at the nuclear envelope. Minimal selection for growth in cell culture resulted

Cultural complexity is multifaceted: Variations in social tinkering.

Chater and Christiansen propose a 6-stage sequence through which social tinkering drives cultural evolution and cultural complexity. We highlight that people's selectivity of information uptake from social others and top-down social changes results in variations in social tinkering. We argue that the process of cultural evolution and the path to cultural complexity is less linear than proposed.

Acculturation orientations affect the evolution of a multicultural society.

The migration of people between different cultures has affected cultural change throughout history. To understand this process, cross-cultural psychologists have used the 'acculturation' framework, classifying 'acculturation orientations' along two dimensions: the willingness to interact with culturally different individuals, and the inclination to retain the own cultural identity ('cultural conservatism'). Here, using a cultural evolution approach, we construct a dynamically explicit model of acculturation. We show that the evolution of a multicultural society, where immigrant and resident cu

Deconstructing Eurocentrism in skin pigmentation research via the incorporation of diverse populations and theoretical perspectives.

The evolution of skin pigmentation has been shaped by numerous biological and cultural shifts throughout human history. Vitamin D is considered a driver of depigmentation evolution in humans, given the deleterious health effects associated with vitamin D deficiency, which is often shaped by cultural factors. New advancements in genomics and epigenomics have opened the door to a deeper exploration of skin pigmentation evolution in both contemporary and ancient populations. Data from ancient Europeans has offered great context to the spread of depigmentation alleles via the evaluation of migrati

Gradual is not always so gradual.

Although we agree with the view of cultural evolution as mainly a gradual process, we show that rapid evolution is also supported by the same criteria. Abrupt cultural changes take place through coercion, leadership, institutional interventions, or mass contagion, and these are assisted by the unique cognitive equipment of humans, especially in our globalized era that boosts fast spread.
