BLACK-ARTS: a qualitative study exploring the insights of black young people with psychiatric disorders and the uses of creative arts therapies to improve mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population. OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura

Investing in Group Psychedelic Therapy for Latinx Immigrants.

Despite increasing interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT), there remains a critical gap in extending these treatments to marginalized and vulnerable populations, including Latinx immigrants. This underrepresentation in both research and clinical practice exacerbates disparities in mental health care access for racial and ethnic minorities, who already face systemic barriers. The Latinx population, despite experiencing mental health challenges at rates similar to their white counterparts, has lower treatment engagement due to factors like cultural stigma, language barriers, and limite

Why do Thoracic Radiologists Need to Know About Cultural Competence (and What Is it Anyway)?

Thoracic radiologists meet patients when performing procedures such as transthoracic computed tomography-guided biopsy and during shared decision-making required for lung cancer screening. Both patients and thoracic radiologists are influenced by their cultures, which affect their health care interactions. While culture may relate to religion or ethnicity of individuals, it also includes multiple additional characteristics such as gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, education, occupation, age, disability, and more. Patients from different cultures undergo similar medical procedur

Healthcare Providers' Strategies to Improve Breast Cancer Screening Among South Asian Women in Victoria.

OBJECTIVE: To explore communication and health education strategies used by healthcare providers to encourage breast cancer screening among culturally diverse South Asian women living in Victoria. METHODS: A qualitative study involving semi-structured

The power of representation in health care: Examining the effect of physician's race on interest in seeking medical care.

OBJECTIVE: Most U.S. physicians are White, creating racially/ethnically discordant patient-physician interactions for Latine Americans, the largest U.S. racial/ethnic minority group and the least likely to receive preventive care. Signaling in-group representation can increase use of medical services, so we examined whether Latine Americans perceive a Latine physician (minoritized ingroup) or a Black physician (minoritized outgroup) as more culturally competent and elicit greater interest in seeking care than a White physician (privileged outgroup). METHOD: Across two studies, participants (N

The use of care home environments to meet culture-specific needs of culturally and linguistically diverse residents with dementia: an integrative review using the ICF framework.

BACKGROUND: Increasing global migration creates new challenges for multicultural societies in providing equitable care. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people who move into care homes find themselves in an environment where health professionals do not speak their language and the access to cultural activities is limited. This may increase loneliness and social isolation. When designing care home environments for CALD residents with dementia, culture is a key consideration. The aim of this integrative review is to highlight what elements of the care home environment are reported to

Policy and Organizational Factors that Affect the Utilization of Health Services for Alzheimer's Disease Among the Latino Community - The Primary Care Provider Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Latino individuals bear a disproportionate burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), with higher risk, underdiagnosis, and limited access to quality care. Primary care providers (PCPs) are crucial for early detection and management. However, organizational and policy factors significantly impact their ability to provide culturally competent and equitable ADRD care for this community. This study explores PCP perspectives on these organizational and policy factors to inform the development of accessible models that improve early diagnosis, preventive care, and quali

Medical Pluralism in the Use of Sobadores among Mexican Immigrants to North Carolina.

Mexican immigrants have a rich history of traditional healers. This analysis describes the conditions for which Mexican immigrants seek treatment from sobadores, and delineates factors that influence seeking treatment from a sobador or a biomedical doctor. This systematic qualitative analysis uses interview data collected with 24 adult Mexican immigrants to North Carolina who had been treated by a sobador in the previous 2 years. Immigrants are engaged in medical pluralism, seeking care from sobadores and biomedical doctors based on the complaint and patient's age. Using a hierarchy of resort,

Parkinson's research with inclusion, diversity, and equity: exploring the experiences of LGBTQ+ caregivers of people living with Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) caregivers often face significant challenges, including worsening anxiety and depression, declining physical health, reduced quality of life, and a high level of caregiver burden. Research shows lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and additional identity (LGBTQ+) caregivers also experience poorer health, greater financial strain, higher stress and depression, more disability, and barriers to care, yet little is known about the experiences of LGBTQ+ PD caregivers. This study explored the knowledge, perceptions, and care experiences of LGBTQ+ PD careg

Purpose: This service evaluation explored barriers and enablers to providing culturally competent lymphoedema care, as reported by health professionals. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was distributed to lymphoedema practitioners across the UK. The survey combined self-rating scales of cultural awareness, knowledge and skills wit

Rehumanizing Holistic Nursing Education: From Mindfulness and Spiritual Care to Transformative Clinical Formation.

Holistic nursing education is increasingly important in preparing nurses who are not only clinically competent, but also reflective, compassionate, spiritually sensitive, and culturally responsive. This commentary argues that mindfulness and spiritual care should not be positioned as isolated curricular additions, but as central elements of transformative clinical formation. Drawing on recent scholarship in holistic nursing, nursing education and spiritual care, the article highlights three critical issues: the risk of reducing mindfulness to a stress-management technique, the persistent gap b
