The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) derive from its rich nutritional composition making it interesting for medicinal uses, besides being used as spice in cooking. To complete the picture on the composition of turmeric, not only the organic compounds need to be known, but also the elemental composition covering essential and potentially toxic elements. The samples were digested in a microwave assisted digestion system using different reagent mixtures. The best digestion mixture was semi-concentrated nitric acid combined with hydrogen perox

Obesity is not only an aesthetic problem but also an important comorbidity in metabolic syndrome and other types of pathologies. Currently discussed adjuvants are turmeric and curcumin, used as food supplements. Starting from synthesis in turmeric plant up to the use of turmeric as a spice, a significant amount of turmeric and its derivatives are lost during the processing procedure. In oral administration, the reduced bioavailability of these compounds must be taken into account, an aspect that can be improved by using different combinations and dosages. As for their pharmacodynamic effects,

BACKGROUND: Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to conventional antibacterial chemotherapy. This has prompted the application of antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in bacteria-related diseases due to its excellent biocide effects. However, few studies have attempted to develop a novel photosensitizer based on natural components. The aim of the present study was to compare the aPDT effects of curcumin and Curcuma xanthorrhiza extract (CXE) against Streptococcus mutans.
METHODS: A planktonic suspension containing an S. mutans strain was treated in three separate groups: aPDT wit

Curcuma longa has been commonly used as a traditional remedy for a variety of symptoms such as inflammation, gastritis and gastric ulcer. When C. longa extract was administered per os to pylori-ligated rat stomachs, it reduced gastric acid secretion and protected against the formation of gastric mucosal lesions. We therefore tested whether C. longa extract inhibits gastric ulcers by blocking the H(2) histamine receptor. Dimaprit, a H(2) histamine receptor agonist, induced intracellular cAMP production in U937 and HL-60 promyelocytes. Pretreatment with C. longa extract significantly blocked dim

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a major spice crop in India, where foliar diseases such as leaf blotch (Taphrina maculans) and leaf spot (Colletotrichum capsici) cause substantial yield losses. A ready-mix formulation of azoxystrobin (18.2%) and difenoconazole (11.4%) is effective against these diseases, but no residue data are available for the agro-climatic conditions of South Gujarat. This two-year field study investigated the persistence, dissipation kinetics, and harvest-time residues of both fungicides in turmeric leaves, soil, and rhizomes using a validated QuEChERS-based LC-MS/MS method

Much uncertainty exists in science and herbal products referencing turmeric (T), turmeric extract (TE), curcuminoid-enriched turmeric extract (CTE), further processed curcuminoid-enriched materials (CEM), or curcumin as a single-chemical entity. To facilitate the rational chemical and biological assessment of turmeric-derived NPs, we introduced the DESIGNER approach of Depleting and Enriching Select Ingredients to Generate Normalized Extract Resources to Curcuma longa preparations. Countercurrent separation of a commercial CTE yielded four key materials-lipophilic metabolites; purified curcumi
