Curvularia fungi presenting as a large cranial base meningioma: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Fungal infections are emerging as a growing threat to human health, especially in immunocompromised patients. Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus are a few of the commonly encountered organisms leading to brain abscesses. In this report, we describe Curvularia geniculata as the causative agent in central nervous system infection. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Our review of the literature did not reveal a similar published case of central nervous system infection with this organism. A 35-year-old African-American man presented with obstructive hydrocephalus from a large cranial base les

Pigmented Curvularia Keratitis Adjacent to a Bifid Pterygium: A Case Report.

Fungal keratitis remains a major cause of corneal morbidity in the tropics, with dematiaceous fungi such as Curvularia representing an important subset. We report a case of Curvularia keratitis in a 55-year-old woman who presented with post-traumatic keratitis and prior use of topical corticosteroids. Examination revealed a bifid pterygium and a grayish-white stromal infiltrate with feathery margins located just anterior to the pterygium head. KOH mount and culture confirmed Curvularia species. The patient responded well to topical natamycin. This case underscores the importance of initiating

Curvularia lunata-Induced Onychomycosis in an Unlikely Host: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nail apparatus, presents with various manifestations, including subungual hyperkeratosis, onycholysis, and nail plate destruction. Established risk factors include trauma, advanced age, and comorbidities such as diabetes and immunosuppression. Trichophyton rubrum, classified as a dermatophyte, is the primary causative agent, with dermatophytes contributing to 60-70% of cases. Nondermatophyte molds (NDM) account for 30-40% of onychomycosis with Candida species being the most commonly identified, while Curvularia species are rarely encounter

Fatal cerebral phaeohyphomycosis due to Curvularia lunata in an immunocompetent patient.

Curvularia infections in humans are relatively uncommon despite the ubiquitous presence of this soil-dwelling dematiaceous fungus in the environment. Originally thought to be solely a pathogen of plants, Curvularia has been described as a pathogen of humans and animals in the last half-century, causing respiratory tract, cutaneous, and corneal infections. Only three previous cases of central nervous system involvement by Curvularia have been documented in the medical literature. We report a fatal case of cerebral Curvularia infection in which there was no known history of immunocompromise or p

Phylloplane fungus Curvularia dactyloctenicola VJP08 effectively degrades commercially available PS product.

Polystyrene (PS), a widely produced plastic with an extended carbon (C-C) backbone that resists microbial attack, is produced in enormous quantities throughout the World. Naturally occurring plasticizers such as plant cuticle and lignocelluloses share similar properties to synthetic plastics such as hydrophobicity, structural complexity, and higher recalcitrance to degradation. In due course of time, phytopathogenic fungi have evolved strategies to overcome these limitations and utilize lignocellulosic waste for their nutrition. The present investigation focuses on the utilization of phyllopla

[Fungal Keratitis Associated with Curvularia lunata: First Case Report from Türkiye].

Fungal keratitis is a medical emergency that is among the most common causes of blindness in developing countries. The type of the agent may vary depending on the geographical conditions under which the patient lives, trauma exposure, the use of contact lenses and profession. Curvularia spp. is a saprophytic genus that rarely causes systemic disease in humans and has 250 species identified to date. They proliferate in soil and plants and spread to the environment with their spores and the formation of blackish and fluffy colonies is its most well-known morphological feature. There may be diffi

Curvularia keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis from a feline source.

Fungal keratitis following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is extremely rare. Except in cases that follow trauma, the source of fungal organisms is unknown in published reports. We report a case of keratitis following LASIK that could be directly traced to a fungal skin infection of the patient's pet cat.

[First report of a case of fungal keratitis due to Curvularia hominis in Spain].

BACKGROUND: Dematiaceous fungal genus Curvularia is a causal agent of keratitis, onychomycosis, and skin infections. In 2014, using DNA sequencing techniques, five new species, including Curvularia hominis, were described. In this article, a report is presented on the first clinical case of C.hominis infection in Spain. It concerns a corneal ulcer caused by this recently described species. CASE REPORT: A 46 year-old male patient with a corneal ulcer in his left eye went to the Emergency Department. Specimens were obtained from the lesion, and the patient was admitted due to the risk of cornea

Enhancement of emulsifier production by Curvularia lunata in cadmium, zinc and lead presence.

The influence of cadmium, zinc and lead on fungal emulsifier synthesis and on the growth of filamentous fungus Curvularia lunata has been studied. Tolerance to heavy metals established for C. lunata was additionally compared with the sensitivity exhibited by strains of Curvularia tuberculata and Paecilomyces marquandii-fungi which do not secrete compounds of emulsifying activity. Although C. lunata, as the only one out of all studied fungi, exhibited the lowest tolerance to heavy metals when grown on a solid medium (in conditions preventing emulsifier synthesis), it manifested the highest tole

Solid state cultivation of Curvularia lunata for transformation of rifamycin B to S.

Biotransformation of rifamycin B to rifamycin S using two strains of C. lunata namely NCIM 716 and NMU grown on various solid substrates viz., grass, paper, jowar/wheat straw, bran and bagasse was studied. Almost complete biotransformation efficiency of rifamycin B at 0. 06 mM concentration was observed within 24 hr. Among these two strains, C. lunata NMU showed 90% of biotransformation and higher rate of cellulose utilization on solid substrates vis-à-vis reference strain. Cellulase activity of both strains was also studied for exoglucanase, endoglucanase and beta-glucosidase. Column bioreact

Fungal peritonitis caused by Curvularia species in a child undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

We report the first case of peritonitis caused by Curvularia species in a child undergoing peritoneal dialysis. He presented with gray-black proteinaceous material obstructing the lumen of his Tenckhoff catheter. Although the peritoneal fluid was cloudy, the patient suffered neither significant abdominal tenderness nor systemic symptoms. Catheter removal and treatment with amphotericin B allowed complete recovery and return to peritoneal dialysis within 7 days. Outdoor play in a wooded environment may have allowed contact of this saprophytic fungus with the child's indwelling catheter transfer

Two Cases of Curvularia geniculata Keratitis Successfully Treated with Natamycin-Based Therapy.

This report describes two cases of Curvularia geniculata keratitis, a rare form of fungal keratitis successfully managed with natamycin-based therapy. Both patients presented with characteristic feathery corneal infiltrates following ocular trauma. In vivo confocal microscopy and direct microscopy revealed septate filamentous fungi, and the isolates were definitively identified as C. geniculata through sequence analysis of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) gene. Antifungal susceptibility testing showed sensitivity to natamycin at 2 μg/mL for both isolates, with variable sensit

First report of Curvularia alcornii causing leaf spot of quinoa in Bangladesh.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a nutritionally valuable pseudo-cereal with growing cultivation potential in Bangladesh; however, its productivity is increasingly constrained by foliar diseases, particularly leaf spot. During field surveys at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, quinoa plants exhibiting typical leaf spot symptoms were observed. The present study aimed to identify and characterize the causal agent using an integrated morphological, molecular, phylogenetic, and pathogenicity-based approach. A fungal isolate (SMM-CaQSAU-1) was consistently recovered from infected l

DERMATITIS AND RHINOSINUITIS CAUSED BY CURVULARIA SPECIES IN A CHINESE GORAL (NAEMORHEDUS GRISEUS).

Curvularia spp. are globally distributed saprophytic fungi, classified in the literature as dematiaceous, or darkly pigmented fungi. These fungi have been increasingly recognized as causing cutaneous, ocular, respiratory, and central nervous system infections in humans, but have been infrequently documented as pathogens in the veterinary literature. A 5-yr-old male Chinese goral (Naemorhedus griseus) presented with bilateral fungal dermatitis of the pinnae, and subsequent pyogranulomatous rhinosinusitis. Clinical signs included epistaxis, mucosanguineous nasal discharge, and dyspnea. Sequentia

Curvularia spicifera in Non-Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis: Case Reports and Diagnostic Insights.

The clinical cases described in this text add to the limited literature on chronic and allergic rhinosinusitis caused by dematiaceous fungi, particularly Curvularia spicifera. These cases highlight the growing recognition of fungal infections as a significant factor in the etiology of rhinosinusitis, a condition traditionally attributed to bacterial causes It has become evident that a comprehensive clinical approach, involving diagnostic imaging and laboratory examinations, particularly culture-based analysis, has been crucial in identifying the specific fungal pathogen responsible for the inf

Severe influenza A virus pneumonia complicated with Curvularia lunata infection: Case Report.

Human infection with Curvularia lunata (C. lunata) is exceptionally rare. A 23-year-old female patient contracted both bacterial and Curvularia lunata infections during influenza A virus infection. Multiple etiological tests were performed repeatedly during hospitalization due to fluctuations in condition. On the 17th day after hospital admission, mold hyphae were discovered in the pathogen culture of the patient's bronchoalveolar lavage fluid during one of these examinations. The patient was suspected to have a filamentous fungal infection. Consequently, we further obtained sputum samples for

Iron redistribution induces oxidative burst and resistance in maize against Curvularia lunata.

ΔClnps6 induced iron redistribution in maize B73 leaf cells and resulted in reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst to enhance plant resistance against Curvularia lunata. Iron is an indispensable co-factor of various crucial enzymes that are involved in cellular metabolic processes and energy metabolism in eukaryotes. For this reason, plants and pathogens compete for iron to maintain their iron homeostasis, respectively. In our previous study, ΔClnps6, the extracellular siderophore biosynthesis deletion mutant of Curvularia lunata, was sensitive to exogenous hydrogen peroxide and virulence reducti
