Between 2012 and 2017, N = 2814 youth between the ages of 4 and 20 were in child protective services (CPS) custody in Hamilton County, Ohio, and placed in out-of-home care. Child welfare administrative records were extracted and linked to electronic health records for all encounters at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, with n = 2787 (99.1%) of records successfully linked prior to de-identifying the data for research purposes. Child welfare administrative data fields in the dataset include demographics, dates of entry into and exit from protective custody and out-of-home care, reas

UNLABELLED: This study examines the influence of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers. Two types of custody loss are examined: informal custody loss (child living apart from mother but courts not involved), and official loss (child removed from mother's care by authorities).
METHODS: Using data from 339 African American women, longitudinal random coefficient models analyzed the effects of each type of custody loss on subsequent drug use and crime.
RESULTS: indicated that both informal and official custody loss predicted increased drug use, and i

IMPORTANCE: Prisons and jails are high-risk environments for COVID-19. Vaccination levels among workers in many such settings remain markedly lower than those of residents and members of surrounding communities. The situation is troubling because prison staff are a key vector for COVID-19 transmission.
OBJECTIVE: To assess patterns and timing of staff vaccination in California state prisons and identify individual-level and community-level factors associated with remaining unvaccinated.
DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from December 22, 2020, through June 30, 2021

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Deaths in custody represent a critical intersection between health care, law enforcement and human rights. By depriving an individual of liberty, the State assumes an enhanced duty to protect life and ensure access to adequate medical care. Any death occurring in custodial settings must therefore be regarded as potentially suspicious until clarified through a prompt, independent and technically robust investigation.
METHODS: This systematic review synthesizes and critically examines scientific evidence on deaths in police and prison custody, with particular emphasis on

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the mediating effect of child-grandparent conflict on the relationship between child trauma exposure and grandparenting stress.
METHODS: Data was collected from a sample of custodial grandparents who participated in kinship care or relative caregiving programs (n = 251). Grandparenting stress was measured with Parenting Stress Scale (Berry & Jones, 1995 ) modified for grandparents. A series of regression models and structural equation models (SEM) were used to test the relationship between the number of different types of child trauma exposures and grandparenti

OBJECTIVE: Custody conditions in police cells are often demeaning and considered inappropriate for human beings. The detention of young adolescents in police custody has received little attention. Our study aimed to describe the characteristics of adolescents under 18 detained in custody.
METHODS: We studied all arrestees aged 13-17 examined in 1 year (January 01-December 31, 2014) in a suburban district near Paris. We evaluated the proportion of adolescents under 18 among all arrestees detained in custody and their medical history, addictive behaviors, perceived health status, and opinion on

People in custody are at high risk of developing depression. Accessing psychological treatments in a prison setting is a particular challenge, in part, due to difficulties accessing specialist mental health workers. Behavioural Activation (BA) may be helpful in improving health outcomes for people in custody experiencing depressive symptoms. The aim of this study is to establish the feasibility and acceptability of custodial health nurses delivering BA to improve depressive symptoms of people in custody. We will conduct a pilot randomised controlled trial with process observation examining the

The procedure of involuntary hospitalization in France has been recently modified by the law of 5 July 2011. Since that time, a liberty and custody judge has been appointed to guarantee the rights of psychiatric inpatients and to prevent abusive hospitalizations. Currently, for one involuntary hospitalization in ten a release is decided by the liberty and custody judge although psychiatrists consider that psychiatric care is necessary. In order to improve our understanding of the role of liberty and custody judges, and how they make their decisions, we conducted a qualitative survey of liberty

BACKGROUND: Little is known about access to primary care either prior to or following incarceration in Canada. International data demonstrate that the health of people in prisons and jails is poor, and access to primary care in the community may be inadequate for incarcerated persons. We aimed to describe the primary care experience of adults in custody in a provincial correctional facility in Ontario in the 12 months prior to admission.
METHODS: We conducted a written survey, and invited all persons in the institution to participate, excluding those in segregation.
RESULTS: One hundred and

BACKGROUND: Improving the quality of care for people detained in police custody requires careful measurement and monitoring. However, a standardized and endorsed set of quality indicators for healthcare in police custody settings is lacking. This study aimed to develop a core set of quality indicators to monitor and evaluate police custody healthcare in the Netherlands.
METHODS: A four-phase modified Delphi process was conducted between February 2024 and September 2025: (1) identification of candidate quality indicators ethrough expert brainstorming; (2) rating of indicators on relevance and

Correctional nurses are trained to care for prisoners in a controlled security environment; however, when a convict is transferred to a noncorrectional health care facility, the nurses there are often unfamiliar with custody requirements or how to safely care for these patients. The care of prisoners outside of prison has not been adequately investigated, and a gap exists between research and nursing education and practice. Nurses rarely have to consider how providing care for a prisoner in custody affects their practice, the potential dissonance between routine nursing care and the requiremen

The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dental disease among children in protective custody (eg, foster care) and associations with foster placement characteristics. We analyzed data from 778 patients ≥12 months of age who received oral health examinations by a pediatrician at a foster care clinic in a large urban setting, including 37 who were additionally examined by a dental resident. Examination findings were classified as routine, in need of urgent referral, or in need of emergent referral. Overall, 53% of children in protective custody had at least 1 abnormal dental

Similar to other institutions, the Swiss prison system faces a growing number of elderly prisoners, trends toward securitization, and, in consequence, more prisoners who will spend the end-of-life (EOL) period of time in prison. By law, prisoners should have the same access to care as the rest of the population. However, custody makes meeting the demands of medical and palliative care difficult. This article focuses on the organizational challenges related to EOL care. Based on ethnographic and documentary research, it examines the institutional logic of the prison and the competing "new" logi

In this essay, an infant with multiple fractures is removed from the custody of her parents because of suspected child abuse. Subsequently studies reveal that the child has osteogenesis imperfecta, type III. Though the child is eventually returned to the mother's custody, her entire first year has been spent in foster care. The essay illustrates the toll taken on families when a diagnosis of OI is missed or delayed.

This contribution explores the associations between suicide attempts; bullying; and the familial, educational, legal, and institutional characteristics of young offenders in custody. The sample was 152 randomly selected male young offenders aged 16-21 years (M = 18.9, SD = 1.3) years from the largest young offenders' institution in Scotland, who completed structured personal interviews. Rates of reported suicide attempts were significantly higher in the population of young offenders than reported rates from general population samples. Being in residential care, the presence of a social worker

BACKGROUND: Nurses provide healthcare in prisons worldwide. Working within security restraints, in environments not designed for nursing care, custodial health nurses (CHNs) use specialist nursing skills and knowledge to do essential work. Rapid increases in prisoner age, infirmity and ill-health of prisoners mandate their access to these nurses.
AIM: To raise awareness of the CHNs struggle for specialty status within the nursing profession, public health frameworks and prisons.
SOURCES OF EVIDENCE: Publicly available information is organised and analysed through the author's lens of 20 year

BACKGROUND: Low levels of medical care engagement have been noted for HIV-positive people leaving systems of incarceration in the United States. Substance misuse frequently co-occurs with criminal justice involvement in individuals who are living with HIV.
METHODS: We analyzed data from in-depth interviews with 19 HIV-positive individuals who were currently or formerly incarcerated in order to elucidate challenges faced in accessing care and maintaining HIV treatment regimens when cycling out of (and often back into) custody. Our thematic analysis used an ecosocial framework to describe parti
