Wastewater substrate disinfection for cyanobacteria cultivation as tertiary treatment.

Cultivation of microalgae or/and cyanobacteria in nutrient-rich wastewaters offers an opportunity for enhancing sustainability of tertiary wastewater treatment processes via resources/energy recovery/production, mitigation of emitted GHGs and provision of added value products. However, maintaining a monoculture in wastewater-media constitutes a significant challenge to be addressed. In this regard, the present work assesses the efficiency of the low-cost wastewater substrate disinfection techniques of filtration, use of NaClO, H2O2 or Fe(VI), as a preliminary treatment stage upstream a cyanoba

Climate change: links to global expansion of harmful cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria are the Earth's oldest (∼3.5 bya) oxygen evolving organisms, and they have had major impacts on shaping our modern-day biosphere. Conversely, biospheric environmental perturbations, including nutrient enrichment and climatic changes (e.g. global warming, hydrologic changes, increased frequencies and intensities of tropical cyclones, more intense and persistent droughts), strongly affect cyanobacterial growth and bloom potentials in freshwater and marine ecosystems. We examined human and climatic controls on harmful (toxic, hypoxia-generating, food web disrupting) bloom-forming cy

Diversity in Rubisco kinetics and CO2-concentrating mechanisms in Cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria are the most ancient oxygenic photosynthetic organisms on Earth and play a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle. Despite their ecological and evolutionary significance, the mechanisms of carbon acquisition and fixation in this phylum remain largely unexplored beyond a few model species. Here, we examined representative taxa spanning the full phylogenetic breadth of Cyanobacteria, assessing in vivo carbon acquisition pathways, the role and effectiveness of CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs), as well as conducting in vitro biochemical characterizations of the kinetic traits and

On the trail of iron uptake in ancestral Cyanobacteria on early Earth.

Cyanobacteria oxygenated Earth's atmosphere ~2.4 billion years ago, during the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE), through oxygenic photosynthesis. Their high iron requirement was presumably met by high levels of Fe(II) in the anoxic Archean environment. We found that many deeply branching Cyanobacteria, including two Gloeobacter and four Pseudanabaena spp., cannot synthesize the Fe(II) specific transporter, FeoB. Phylogenetic and relaxed molecular clock analyses find evidence that FeoB and the Fe(III) transporters, cFTR1 and FutB, were present in Proterozoic, but not earlier Archaean lineages of C

Cyanobacteria and Eukaryotic Microalgae as Emerging Sources of Antibacterial Peptides.

Cyanobacteria and microalgae are oxygen-producing photosynthetic unicellular organisms encompassing a great diversity of species, which are able to grow under all types of extreme environments and exposed to a wide variety of predators and microbial pathogens. The antibacterial compounds described for these organisms include alkaloids, fatty acids, indoles, macrolides, peptides, phenols, pigments and terpenes, among others. This review presents an overview of antibacterial peptides isolated from cyanobacteria and microalgae, as well as their synergism and mechanisms of action described so far.

Investigation of the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of marine cyanobacteria in Bohai Bay: Cyanobacteria may be important hosts of antibiotic resistance genes in marine environment.

Marine cyanobacteria, as widely distributed and photosynthetically autotrophic bacteria in the ocean, may contribute to the global dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and develop a different antimicrobial susceptibility pattern from heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria from freshwater environments. However, studies on antimicrobial susceptibility and the carriage of ARGs in marine cyanobacteria are still very limited. In this study, the antibiotic resistance characteristics of cyanobacteria in nearshore waters were examined through field monitoring and laboratory investigat

Obligate Brominating Enzymes Underlie Bromoform Production by Marine Cyanobacteria.

Marine algae are prolific producers of bromoform (CHBr3 ). This naturally produced molecule is a potent environmental pollutant as it volatilizes into the atmosphere and contributes to depletion of the ozone layer in a manner akin to, and in magnitude similar to, man-made chlorofluorocarbons. While phototrophs such as seaweeds, diatoms, and dinoflagellates are known sources of bromoform, additional as yet unknown biogenetic sources of bromoform exist in the oceans. Here, using halogenating enzymes as diagnostic genetic elements, we demonstrate that marine cyanobacteria also possess the enzymol

DNA extraction from benthic Cyanobacteria: comparative assessment and optimization.

AIMS: Benthic Cyanobacteria produce toxic and odorous compounds similar to their planktonic counterparts, challenging the quality of drinking water supplies. The biofilm that benthic algae and other micro-organisms produce is a complex and protective matrix. Monitoring to determine the abundance and identification of Cyanobacteria, therefore, relies on molecular techniques, with the choice of DNA isolation technique critical. This study investigated which DNA extraction method is optimal for DNA recovery in order to guarantee the best DNA yield for PCR-based analysis of benthic Cyanobacteria.

Two-piece tmRNA in cyanobacteria and its structural analysis.

tmRNA acts to rescue stalled bacterial ribosomes while encoding a peptide tag added trans-translationally to the nascent peptide, targeting it for proteolysis. The permuted gene structure found in a group of cyanobacteria is shown to produce a two-piece mature tmRNA, as had been observed previously for the independently permuted gene of alpha-proteobacteria. The pieces have been mapped onto the gene sequence and aligned for the permuted cyanobacterial tmRNA sequences, including four novel sequences. Structural probing and base pair co-variations support a secondary structure model in which two

Mutations in the circadian cycle drive adaptive plasticity in cyanobacteria.

Circadian clocks allow organisms to anticipate daily fluctuations in light and temperature, but how this anticipatory role promotes adaptation to different environments remains poorly understood. Here, we subjected the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 to a long-term evolution experiment under high light, high temperature, and elevated CO2 levels. After 1,200 generations, we obtained a strain exhibiting a 600% increase in growth rate. Whole-genome sequencing revealed three mutations fixed in the evolved population, two of which were sufficient to recapitulate the fast-growing phe

Microalgae and cyanobacteria as biological agents of biocathodes in biofuel cells.

Biofuel cells (BFCs) are an environmental friendly technology that can simultaneously perform wastewater treatment and generate electricity. Peculiarities that hinder the widespread introduction of this technology are the need to use artificial aeration and chemical catalysts, which make the technology expensive and cause secondary pollution. A possible solution to this issue is the use of biocathodes with microalgae and cyanobacteria. Microalgae in the biocathodic chamber produce oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Various BFC technologies with algal biocathode (microbial fuel cells, mi

Aerosolization of cyanobacteria as a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with no known cause. There are many clues to suggest an environmental trigger for the disease, including reports of conjugal couples and co-localized employees that developed sALS. On the island of Guam,a very high incidence of sALS occurred among the Chamorro natives back in the 1940s and 1950s and has been linked to the neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) that is produced by cyanobacteria that live symbiotically in the roots of the cycad plant, the seeds from which were a staple of the Chamorro diet

Lysine butyrylation modulates central carbon metabolism and photosynthesis in cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria, evolutionarily ancient photoautotrophs, serve as key model organisms for studying diverse biological processes. Lysine butyrylation (Kbu) is an emerging post-translational modification implicated in diverse biological processes from bacteria to mammals. However, the distribution and functional significance of Kbu in cyanobacteria have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we present the first proteome-wide analysis of Kbu in the model cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 using peptide pre-fractionation, butyrylation antibody enrichment and high-accuracy mass spectrome

Resilience and Mitigation Strategies of Cyanobacteria under Ultraviolet Radiation Stress.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) tends to damage key cellular machinery. Cells may adapt by developing several defence mechanisms as a response to such damage; otherwise, their destiny is cell death. Since cyanobacteria are primary biotic components and also important biomass producers, any drastic effects caused by UVR may imbalance the entire ecosystem. Cyanobacteria are exposed to UVR in their natural habitats. This exposure can cause oxidative stress which affects cellular morphology and vital processes such as cell growth and differentiation, pigmentation, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism,

Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle-Driven Metabolic and Molecular Reprogramming in Cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria are promising platforms for bioenergy, carbon sequestration, and bioproduct synthesis, but their photosynthetic efficiency is limited by suboptimal light utilization, electron transport constraints, and environmental stress. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO2) have emerged as powerful photocatalytic materials that can enhance light absorption, modulate electron transport, and influence the redox balance in biological systems. This review advances the concept of photocatalytic-biological coupling, in which n-TiO2 functions as artificial light amplifiers that augment cyanobacte

Life Course Exposure to Cyanobacteria and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Survival.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) occur worldwide and can cause ingestion and inhalation exposure to microcystin and other potent toxins. This study develops life course exposure measures for cyanobacteria for application in population studies and then associates these measures with the survival of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The exposure measures utilize an individual's residence history, date of disease onset, and satellite data from the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network. Residence duration for selected exposure windows referenced to disease onset date
