A New Protocol for Molecular Detection of Cyclospora cayetanensis as Contaminants of Berry Fruits.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian parasite that is associated with foodborne outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses. Raspberries have been implicated as a vehicle of infection in some of these outbreaks. Most of the molecular techniques used for the detection of parasites commonly use the 18s rRNA as a target gene, which is highly conserved. The conserved nature of the 18s rRNA gene among coccidia means that there is potential for cross-reactivity from primers intended to target this gene in C. cayetanensis with the same gene in related coccidia. This provides an additional challenge in

Simultaneous Molecular Detection of Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora from Raw Vegetables in Korea.

Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora are well-known coccidian protozoa that can cause waterborne and foodborne diarrheal illnesses. There have been a few reports regarding contamination in different vegetables with Cryptosporidium, but no data are available regarding the sources of Cyclospora infections in Korea. In the present study, we collected 6 kinds of vegetables (perilla leaves, winter-grown cabbages, chives, sprouts, blueberries, and cherry tomatoes) from July 2014 to June 2015, and investigated contamination by these 2 protozoa using multiplex quantitative real-time PCR. Among 404 vegetable

[Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium parvum coinfection in a pregnant woman with prolonged diarrhoea].

Cyclospora cayetanensis which is a recently described pathogen, is associated with prolonged diarrheae and history of travelling to tropical regions and intake of suspicious food and water. Cryptosporidium parvum is another pathogen that causes severe diarrhea defined initially in especially AIDS patients since 1980's. Cases of cyclosporiasis are frequently missed, since it is difficult to detect the parasite in human fecal samples, despite an increasing amount of data regarding this parasite. To identify both of these coccidian protozoa, faeces should be examined by modified acid-fast stain.

Comparative sequence analysis of Cyclospora cayetanensis apicoplast genomes originating from diverse geographical regions.

BACKGROUND: Cyclospora cayetanensis is an emerging coccidian parasite that causes endemic and epidemic diarrheal disease called cyclosporiasis, and this infection is associated with consumption of contaminated produce or water in developed and developing regions. Food-borne outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have occurred almost every year in the USA since the 1990s. Investigations of these outbreaks are currently hampered due to lack of molecular epidemiological tools for trace back analysis. The apicoplast of C. cayetanensis, a relict non-photosynthetic plastid with an independent genome, provides

Chronic Cyclospora infection in a heart transplant patient with intestinal malabsorption: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporiasis is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption in immunosuppressed patients. CASE SUMMARY: We report an unusual case of chronic Cyclospora infection in a heart transplant patient with a five-month history of watery diarrhea and weight loss. Initial stool testing failed to discover a causative pathogen. Duodenal biopsy showed histologic findings of intraepithelial lymphocytosis and partial villous blunting, raising the possibility of celiac disease. A repeat duodenal biopsy five months later revealed intracellular parasites with gametocyte, meront, and schizon

Enteric parasites Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium hominis in domestic and wildlife animals in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Enteric parasitic infections remain a major public health problem globally. Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora spp. and Giardia spp. are parasites that cause diarrhea in the general populations of both developed and developing countries. Information from molecular genetic studies on the speciation of these parasites and on the role of animals as vectors in disease transmission is lacking in Ghana. This study therefore investigated these diarrhea-causing parasites in humans, domestic rats and wildlife animals in Ghana using molecular tools. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from

Cyclospora cayetanensis and other intestinal parasites associated with diarrhea in a rural area of Jordan.

Cryptosporidium spp. and Cyclospora cayetanensis have emerged as important causes of epidemic and endemic diarrhea in immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. The exact modes of transmission in certain rural areas are still unclear. Reports of water-borne and food-borne outbreaks suggest that fecally contaminated water or food acts as a vehicle of transmission. Two hundred stool samples of patients with gastroenteritis from four health centers in a rural area of Jordan were examined using formalin-ethyl acetate concentration, wet preparation, and modified acid-fast staining methods. Oocyst

Migrating Anatidae as Sources of Environmental Contamination with Zoonotic Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora and Microsporidia.

Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and microsporidia are gastrointestinal pathogens that can cause various disease symptoms in both animals and humans. Numerous studies worldwide have confirmed the presence of these eukaryotic pathogens in nesting and migrating wild geese, ducks, and swans. Migration spreads these zoonotic enteric pathogens to distant locations, which could have public health implications. Soils and water bodies (lakes, ponds, rivers and wetlands) in urban and suburban areas have been shown to be vulnerable to contamination by waterfowl droppings. This review addresses the

Contamination of fresh produce sold on the Italian market with Cyclospora cayetanensis and Echinococcus multilocularis.

To investigate the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis, Toxoplasma gondii and Echinococcus spp. in fresh produce sold in Italy, 324 locally produced 'ready-to-eat' (RTE) mixed-salad packages belonging to three brands and 324 berries packages (blueberries and blackberries imported from Peru and Mexico, respectively, and raspberries grown in Italy) were purchased at retail. Nine individual packages from each of the six types of fresh produce were collected monthly for one year, and with the same produce pooled, this resulted in a total of 72 pools for the whole year. Using microscopy (FLOTAC), a

A report case of Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium mixed infection in a HIV-negative child in Thailand.

The first case of cyclosporosis in a non HIV-infected child in Thailand, co-infected with Cryptosporidium, was reported. The patient was a 3 year-old malnourished orphan who presented with fever, abdominal distension and relapsing diarrhea. There was no leukocyte in her stool, however, numerous Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified by modified acid-fast staining. The illness was cured by co-trimoxazole and fluid therapy. More coccidial infections in Thailand may be detected if modified acid-fast staining is routinely performed.

Outbreaks of pseudo-infection with Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium--Florida and New York City, 1995.

Efforts to expand the scope of surveillance and diagnostic testing for emerging infectious diseases also may increase the potential for identifying pseudo-outbreaks (i.e., increases in incidence that may result from enhanced surveillance) and outbreaks of pseudo-infection (i.e., clusters of false-positives for infection). This report describes the investigations of outbreaks of pseudo-infection with Cyclospora in Florida and Cryptosporidium in New York City in 1995 after health departments in those jurisdictions had initiated surveillance for these emerging organisms. These investigations emph
