Accumulation of As, Cd and selected trace elements in tubers of Scirpus maritimus L. from Doñana marshes (South Spain).

The collapse of a pyrite-mining, tailing dam on 1998 contaminated an area of 4286 ha along the Agrio and Guadiamar river valleys in southern Spain. Over 2700 ha of the Doñana marshes, an important wintering area for wetland European birds, were contaminated. This study reports analyses of the tubers of Scirpus maritimus (an important food for greylag geese, Anser anser) collected in 2000 in the "Entremuros" (spill-affected area) and in nearby unaffected Doñana marshes (control areas). In the spill-affected area mean tuber tissue concentrations of Cd (0.25 mg kg-1) and Zn (61 mg kg-1) were grea

Role of ectomycorrhizal colonization in enhancement of nutrients for survival of plants collected from mountainous cold stress areas.

BACKGROUND: Ectomycorrhizal (ECM and ECM-like) structures associated with plant root systems are a challenge for scientists. The dispersion pattern of roots within the soil profile and the nutritional conditions are both favourable factors to motivate the plants to make ECM associations. RESULTS: This study discusses the colonization of mycorrhizal associations in Kobresia and Polygonum species including Polygonum viviparum, Kobresia filicina, K. myosuroides, Alnus nitida, Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris, and Trifolium repens grown naturally in cold stressed soils of Gilgit-Baltistan (high-a

Investigating uptake and translocation of mercury species by sawgrass ( Cladium jamaicense ) using a stable isotope tracer technique.

The role of macrophytes in mercury (Hg) cycling in the Florida Everglades ecosystem has not been fully understood. In this study, a stable isotope ((199)Hg(2+)) addition technique was used to trace the methylation, uptake, and translocation of Hg by sawgrass ( Cladium jamaicense ) and quantitatively evaluate the contribution of atmospheric and soil Hg to Hg in sawgrass leaves and below-ground biomass. The results showed that spiked (199)Hg(2+) could be rapidly methylated to monomethylmercury (Me(199)Hg) in the soil of the sawgrass pots. Only small portions of total Hg (THg) and monomethylmercu

Cytological and Ploidy Analyses Revealing Fertility Defects of Cultivar Cyperus esculentus L. in China.

Cyperus esculentus L., commonly known as Yellow Nutsedge or Tiger Nut, belongs to the Sedge family (Cyperaceae), which is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions around the world. The species is particularly noted for its underground tuber, which is rich in starch and oil, and can be used for both food and industrial purposes. However, cultivated C. esculentus rarely flowers in the field, and when it does, flowering is often accompanied by sterility, significantly hindering the development of superior varieties through sexual hybridization. Our investigation into the causes of pol

Dominant plant functional groups outperform diversity in regulating biomass under yak seasonal grazing in an alpine meadow on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Seasonal grazing is a practice for alpine meadows that involves rotating pastures with the seasons. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which seasonal grazing affects the aboveground biomass (AGB) of plant communities and functional groups in the alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau remain unclear. Based on a long-term seasonal grazing management experiment established in an alpine meadow since 2010, this study investigated the effects of spring, summer, autumn, and winter grazing on plant diversity, functional group species richness, climate, soil nutrients, and soil enzyme activity in a

Ammonium tolerance and toxicity of Actinoscirpus grossus--a candidate species for use in tropical constructed wetland systems.

Actinoscirpus grossus, a native species in tropical wetlands of South-East Asia, North Australia and the Pacific islands, has been reported to perform well in experimental scale constructed wetland (CW) systems. However, little is known about how high NH4(+) concentrations prevailing in wastewater affect growth and performance of this species. We examined growth, morphological and physiological responses of A. grossus to NH4(+) concentrations of 0.5, 2.5, 5, 10 and 15mM under hydroponic growth conditions. The relative growth rates (RGR) of the plants were highest at 2.5mM NH4(+) but significan

Transcriptional insights into molecular events occurring during tuber maturation of tigernut (Cyperus esculentus L.).

Tigernut (Cyperus esculentus L. var. sativus Boeck., Cyperaceae), an emerging oilcrop, is unique for producing desiccation-tolerant tubers. However, thus far, the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. To gain insights into molecular events occurring during tuber maturation, deep sequencing was used to investigate gene expression profiles of two representative tuber stages of Reyan3, i.e., immature and mature, whose tubers were characterized by light and dark brown in color and with the moisture content of 74.80% and 48.30%, respectively. A total of 16,499 genes were shown to be expressed,

Self-Strengthened PDT Coupling ROS Precise Regulation High-Penetration Microneedle for Adaptive Treatment of Pathological Scar.

Pathological scars are fibrotic disorders arising from aberrant wound healing. PDT is effective but limited by a dense matrix, hypoxia, and post-PDT excessive ROS-induced secondary inflammation. To address this, a NIR-switchable ROS-regulatory liposome (ICC@Lip) with CaO2 NPs (oxygenation to strengthen PDT) and Cu5.4O nanozymes (ROS scavenging) was developed. In addition, inspired by Cyperaceae stems and triangular arrows, a highly penetrable biomimetic microneedle platform loaded with ICC@Lip and collagenase I (ICC@Lip/HPMN) was constructed to realize efficient transdermal cargo delivery and

Culture-based inventory and functional guild analysis of root-invading fungi associated with grassland plants across multiple regions in China.

Grassland ecosystems harbor diverse plant-associated fungal communities that contribute to ecosystem functioning and plant health. However, large-scale culture-based inventories of root-invading fungi across multiple grassland regions in China remain scarce. In this study, we conducted a multi-region survey of culturable root-invading fungi isolated from surface-sterilized, discolored root and basal stem tissues in contact with the soil. We sampled 33 herbaceous plant species, representing 19 genera and 9 families, across 17 counties in Qinghai, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Xizang. A total of

Enrichment culture and identification of endophytic methanotrophs isolated from peatland plants.

Aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) are an environmentally significant group of microorganisms due to their role in the global carbon cycle. Research conducted over the past few decades has increased the interest in discovering novel genera of methane-degrading bacteria, which efficiently utilize methane and decrease the global warming effect. Moreover, methanotrophs have more promising applications in environmental bioengineering, biotechnology, and pharmacy. The investigations were undertaken to recognize the variety of endophytic methanotrophic bacteria associated with Carex nigra, Vac

Methylmercury concentrations in a degrading lithalsa field: Effects of thermokarst development and revegetation.

Organic matter sequestered in permafrost environments contains mercury (Hg) which can be exposed via permafrost thaw to conditions that favour its microbial conversion into its organic and neurotoxic form, methylmercury (MeHg). Permafrost thaw affects landscapes unevenly, creating a patchwork of conditions controlled by ground ice distribution and time since degradation. However, little is known about the relationship between the evolution of thaw features and net MeHg production in thawing landscapes. Near Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Québec), the degradation of permafrost mounds, such as litha
