Discogobio acutusirostris, a new species of cyprinids (Teleostei: Cypriniformes) from the middle Chang-Jiang basin in Guizhou Province, China.

Discogobio acutusirostris, a new species, is here described from the Yuanjiang River of the middle Chang-Jiang basin in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. It can be assigned to the species group of Discogobio diagnosed by having a large mental adhesive disc with its edge margin extending to or beyond the vertical through the anterior edge of eye and a snout covered with small tubercles. The new species is separated from all other species of this group by having many rows of dark brown spots along scale rows on the flank, an unscaled region of the abdomen adjacent to the ventral mid-line restri

Morphological characterisation of Dactylogyrus spp. (Platyhelminthes: Monopisthocotylea) from Enteromius spp. (Cypriniformes) in Cameroon, with description of a new species.

Monogeneans are fish ectoparasites which infested commonly gill filament. They are characterised by their sclerotized haptoral and genital structures. Morphological study of gill monogeneans was conducted at Lebamzip, Center Region of Cameroon. Fish were caught along Cesala River. Each monogenean was mounted between slide and coverslip in a drop of GAP mixture. Drawings of the sclerotized structures were made using Corel Draw and measurements were taken on Amscope. Four monogeneans species belonging to the genus Dactylogyrus were identified. One new species is described Dactylogyrus cesalaensi

Magnischistura khaokrajom, a new genus and species of loach (Cypriniformes: Nemacheilidae) from the Pachi River drainage in Western Thailand.

Magnischistura khaokrajom, new genus and species, is described from a small tributary of the Pachi River in the Suan Phueng region of the Tenasserim Hills in western Thailand. Magnischistura shares with several recently described genera of nemacheilids a globulous suborbital flap with tubercles at its extremity and a highly modified pectoral fin on mature males, but molecular data failed to support a close relationship to any of them. Morphologically, the new genus is distinguished by the presence of a suborbital flap in the female. The highly modified pectoral fin of males is hypothesized to

Histopathology of the Haplorchis taichui infection in the freshwater fish, Tigris kingfish, and Tigris barb (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Iran.

Flukes can cause severe and lethal diseases in various animals, including fish. Both adult and larval stages of flukes are found in fish. Haplorchiasis is an infection of fish gills by heterophyid trematodes such as Haplorchis taichui. To detect this parasite, the gills of 30 Tigris kingfish and Tigris barb collected from the Shapour River in Kazerun, Fars province were found to be parasitized with metacercarial cysts of a heterophyid trematode identified as H. taichui. Histopathological examination of the infected fish gills revealed cartilage proliferation, severe hyperplasia, fusion, S-form

Using the whole body as a sucker: combining respiration and feeding with an attached lifestyle in hill stream loaches (Balitoridae, Cypriniformes).

Small fishes living in fast-flowing rivers face a harsh environment as they can easily be swept away by the rapid currents. To survive such circumstances, teleosts evolved a wide variety of attachment mechanisms, based on friction, negative pressure or both. Balitorinae (Balitoridae, Cypriniformes) are exceptional in using their whole body as an adhesive apparatus. We investigated the morphological adaptations of Balitorinae by studying the osteology and myology of four species (Beaufortia leveretti, Sewellia lineolata, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, and Gastromyzon punctulatus) using clearing and

Genotoxic effects and gene expression in Danio rerio (Hamilton 1822) (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) exposed to mining-impacted tributaries in Manizales, Colombia.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is one of the most studied aquatic organisms for water biomonitoring, due to its sensitivity to environmental degradation and resistance to toxic substances. This study determined the presence of micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities in peripheral blood erythrocytes, and assessed the gene expression of caspase-3 (CASP-3) and metallothionein 1 (MT-1) in the gills and liver of D. rerio. The study fish (n = 45) were exposed to water collected from two stations with mining impact (E2 and E3) and a reference station without evident mining contamination (E1), all located

Taxonomic revision and phylogenetic study of the tribe Gobionini in China (Actinopteri, Cypriniformes, Gobionidae), with the discussion on the generic character of the genus Mesogobio.

The tribe Gobionini, comprising three genera, is widely distributed across Eurasia, with China representing one of the distribution hotspots. Despite numerous species descriptions over the past decades, a comprehensive taxonomic study of this tribe is still lacking. Both morphological comparisons and molecular phylogenetic analysis based on Cytochrome-b gene have been included in this study. Our results indicate that the previously reported species diversity within this tribe may have been overestimated, with 12 species from two genera identified in China: Mesogobio lachneri, Gobio cynocephalu

Asexual Reproduction Does Not Apparently Increase the Rate of Chromosomal Evolution: Karyotype Stability in Diploid and Triploid Clonal Hybrid Fish (Cobitis, Cypriniformes, Teleostei).

Interspecific hybridization, polyploidization and transitions from sexuality to asexuality considerably affect organismal genomes. Especially the last mentioned process has been assumed to play a significant role in the initiation of chromosomal rearrangements, causing increased rates of karyotype evolution. We used cytogenetic analysis and molecular dating of cladogenetic events to compare the rate of changes of chromosome morphology and karyotype in asexually and sexually reproducing counterparts in European spined loach fish (Cobitis). We studied metaphases of three sexually reproducing spe

[Composition of leucocytes of the head kidney of the crucian carp Carassius auratus gibelio (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) as affected by invasion of cestode Digramma interrupta (Cestoda; Pseudophyllidea)].

The composition of leucocytes of the head kidney is studied in the crucian carps (Carassius auratus) either contaminated or uncontaminated with Digramma interrupta. The composition of leucocytes in the pronephros of the crucian carp from Lake Baikal basin has a lymphoid character. Compared to the crucian carp from the European part of Russia, in the fish from Baikal the granulocytopoetic processes are more pronounced. This is proved by the high content of young forms of granulocytes. In the fish infected with digramma, the immune suppression of proliferation of blasts and young forms of eosino

Revealing the hidden diversity of Gyrodactylus communities (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae) from Nearctic Catostomidae and Leuciscidae fish hosts (Teleostei, Cypriniformes), with descriptions of ten new species.

Despite the high diversity of freshwater fishes in the Nearctic region, little is known about the composition of their parasite communities. We addressed the diversity of viviparous monogeneans of Gyrodactylus parasitizing highly diversified cypriniform fish inhabiting Nearctic watersheds. Nowadays, a thorough assessment of Gyrodactylus spp. diversity requires both morphological traits and genetic data. A combination of taxonomically important haptoral features and sequences of the ITS regions and 18S rDNA revealed 25 Gyrodactylus spp. parasitizing two catostomid and 15 leuciscid species sampl
