Failure of conventional retrograde cystography to detect bladder ruptures in pelvic trauma.

Conventional retrograde cystography is often used to investigate patients with suspected bladder ruptures in pelvic trauma. Clinical indicators suggestive of a rupture include haematuria and suprapubic tenderness and should increase the suspicion of bladder and urinary tract injury and prompt the clinician to undertake further investigations. Two patients with high-energy pelvic fractures had bladder ruptures detected intraoperatively despite normal preoperative retrograde cystogram. Both patients had significant clinical indicators suggestive of underlying bladder and urinary tract injury. In

[Positional installation of contrast cystography: a new approach in the diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux].

INTRODUCTION: Positional installation of contrast cystography (PIC cystography) represents a new method to identify vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) that is unrevealed by standard diagnostic procedures. It is performed by radiological examination of the vesicoureteral junction during cystoscopic installation of the contrast medium at the ureteral orifice. OBJECTIVE: We studied the significance of PIC cystography to demonstrate VUR that failed to be revealed by standard voiding cystourethrography (MCUG), as well as the degree of the correlation of such a finding with endoscopic appearance and the p

Perforation of the augmented urinary bladder in nine children and adolescents: importance of cystography.

Augmentation of the urinary bladder is a popular surgical procedure for increasing the capacity and lowering the intraluminal pressure in patients whose bladder is small, noncompliant, or has high pressure. Among 250 augmentations performed at our hospital, nine patients have had 16 episodes of postoperative extravasation of urine from their augmented bladder. Thirteen episodes were studied by fluoroscopically monitored contrast cystography, which was diagnostic in 12. One patient's perforation was noted during an unrelated operation and the other two died of peritonitis before cystography cou

Nuclear cystography and renal sonography: findings in girls with urinary tract infection.

This retrospective study documents the findings on nuclear cystography and renal sonography of 455 girls who had urologic imaging for a proved urinary tract infection (UTI). Nuclear cystograms were normal in 313 (69%) of 455 patients. Vesicoureteral reflux was seen in 142 patients (31%): six with grade I, 90 with grade II, 43 with grade III, and three with grade IV. Twelve percent of patients with vesicoureteral reflux had renal parenchymal scars. Increasing grades of reflux were associated with an increase in the severity and number of parenchymal scars. Normal renal sonograms were seen in 83

Low diagnostic sensitivity of cystoscopy and cystography of surgically confirmed vesicoenteric fistulae.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of cystoscopy and cystography, as compared to other diagnostic studies, in identifying vesicoenteric fistulae (VEF) in a contemporary series of patients with surgically confirmed VEF. METHODS: With institutional review board approval, we performed a single-center retrospective review of surgically confirmed VEF between 2002 and 2018. Demographic data, comorbidities, symptoms, and diagnostic evaluation were reviewed. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of cystoscopy in diagnosis of VEF were compared to cross-sectional imagi

Ureterocolic fistula diagnosed on the basis of diuretic renogram and direct radionuclide cystography.

Ureterocolic fistulae are a rare phenomenon and are most commonly seen secondary to obstructive ureteric calculi. These are usually diagnosed on barium enema or intravenous urography. Most of the times, more than one investigation is needed to confirm the findings. We present a case of iatrogenically-induced ureterocolic fistula, diagnosed on renogram and direct radionuclide cystography. This case showcases the possibility of using a renogram study as a diagnostic tool for a suspected ureterocolic fistula. A renogram study also enables to asess the renal function, which is essential in decidin

Extraperitoneal Rupture of a Bladder Diverticulum and the Role of Multidetector Computed Tomography Cystography.

Nontraumatic rupture of the bladder is less widely recognized than traumatic rupture, with a challenging early diagnosis due to high variability in clinical presentations. We report a case of extraperitoneal rupture of a bladder diverticulum in a patient with diabetes mellitus who presented with paralytic ileus. Despite conservative management, the patient developed sepsis requiring surgical treatment. Urinary tract infection and bladder outlet obstruction were considered to be potential mechanisms of the rupture. Multidetector computed tomography cystography should be used as the first-line m

Measurement of vesicoureteral reflux with intravenous 99mTc-DTPA compared to radiographic cystography.

The results of a 99mTc-DTPA study of vesicoureteral reflux in 51 children with recurrent urinary tract infections were compared with those of radiographic micturition cystourethrography. Reflux, shown by either of the two methods, was regarded as an indication of the disorder. Neither method was regarded as a standard reference method. Agreement between the two methods was obtained in 90 of 102 renal units, i.e., ureter and/or renal pelvis (88%). Statistical analysis performed on the remaining 12 cases showed that the two procedures usually gave similar results.

Vesicorectal fistula detected on direct radionuclide cystography--importance of fecal matter imaging.

We report an 11 year old male patient with the history of imperforate anus, which was repaired surgically 4 years ago. He has been complaining of intermittent passing of urine into the rectum recently. The vesicorectal fistula in this patient was proven by imaging of the fecal matter post direct radionuclide cystography study. Our case showed that nuclear medicine imaging can be extended to unanimated objects such as patients' excrements or fluids with important diagnostic yields.

Direct radionuclide cystography imaging in colovesical fistula due to inguinal hernia operation complication.

Colovesical fistula is an abnormal connection between the enteric and urinary systems, usually sigmoid colon, caused by various conditions. One cause of colovesical fistula is iatrogenic injury, such as induced by inguinal hernia surgery. We present a case of colovesical fistula. A 57-year-old male was admitted to a local hospital with complaints of dysuria and pneumaturia. He had a past history of total extraperitoneal laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair operation 7 years previously for bilateral inguinal hernia. The case was assessed with radiologic and scintigraphic techniques. Radiologic t

[Postoperative monitoring of anastomosis after radical retropubic prostatectomy Transrectal ultrasound can replace cystography?].

OBJECTIVE: We determined if transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is as reliable as cystography in detecting vesicourethral extravasates after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between October 2005 and February 2006 we prospectively investigated 100 consecutive patients undergoing RRP. The vesicourethral anastomosis was proven 6 days after operation by a combined investigation with TRUS and cystography. RESULTS: In the majority of patients (79%) the vesicourethral anastomosis was watertight on postoperative day 6 (POD) or showed minimal leakage (8%) so that the urinary ca

CT cystography with multiplanar reformation for suspected bladder rupture: experience in 234 cases.

OBJECTIVE: CT cystography has replaced conventional cystography in the evaluation of patients with suspected bladder rupture in most trauma centers. We performed this retrospective review to determine the accuracy of CT cystography and the role of multiplanar reformation in the diagnosis of bladder injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient cohort was composed of trauma patients with clinically or CT-suspected bladder ruptures who were evaluated with CT cystography using two different MDCT scanners at our level 1 trauma center. The patients were identified through Folio, a radiology research

Sources of error in direct radionuclide cystography in children and the need for a standardized, manometric apparatus.

Direct radionuclide cystography (DRC) is a safe and reliable method for the detection and follow-up of vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR). Since the first DRC was performed, during the early 60s, the method has undergone many refinements. Themanometric approach, which was first introduced in 1984, provides a correlation between the bladder pressure and VUR visualization. In this study the sources of error that may alter the results of DRC are discussed and a novel, standardized low costmanometric apparatus is suggested.

Unicameral bone cyst: radiographic assessment of venous outflow by cystography as a prognostic index.

The aim of this study was to determine the benefits of cystography in the management of a simple bone cyst, its implication in the final result of the treatment after corticoid intracystic injections, and the presence of secondary effects. We retrospectively reviewed 42 patients diagnosed with a simple bone cyst. Cystography was performed before the corticoid injection. The presence or absence of loculation intracyst and the existence and number of venous outflows were determined. According to the venous drainage, cysts were classified as type 0 when a venous outflow did not exist and as type

New quantitative parameters for evaluating radionuclide cystography and their value in understanding the physiology of reflux.

UNLABELLED: In this descriptive study of radionuclide cystography, time-activity curves were generated from renal pelves with reflux and evaluated to reveal the physiology of the reflux. The generated new parameters were also evaluated for any correlation with the frequency of urinary tract infections and renal scarring. METHODS: Thirty-two children with reflux to the renal pelvis (36 refluxing units) were included. Regions of interest were drawn on the pelves and bladder, and time-activity curves were generated. The first reflux phase, the bladder volume at first reflux, and the bladder volu
