Isolated continent cystostomy on neurologic native bladder: Functional results.

INTRODUCTION: Continent cutaneous urinary diversion (CCUD) is proposed to patients suffering from chronic neurologic retention and undergoing intermittent self-catheterization (ISC). In case of neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), augmentation enterocystoplasty is often required. The aim was to identify the prevalence of urinary stomal and/or urethral leakage in patients who had not undergone enlargement. METHODS: Monocentric, retrospective study of patients who underwent CCUD surgery in a neuro-urological context. Mitrofanoff's, Monti's or Casale's channels were performed. Patients select

[Post-traumatic complication of trans-appendiceal cystostomy: urinary peritonitis].

Two children who had undergone a transappendicular urinary diversion (type Mitrofanoff) developed bladder rupture, one following abdominal trauma, 4 months after the operation and the other following traumatic self-catheterization at 4 years. The clinical history and standard radiological examinations (ultrasonography, cystography) confirmed the diagnosis of urinary peritonitis. Emergency surgical repair was possible in both cases with an uneventful postoperative course. This serious and rare complication requires emergency surgery and justifies rigorous selection of children suitable for this

[Transappendicular continent cystostomy. Critical study apropos of 30 cases].

UNLABELLED: Continent vesicostomy using appendix has been performed in 30 incontinent children (myelo-meningocele). Surgical technique is described laying stress on the closure of the bladder neck and the appendix arrangement: appendix is implanted in the bladder with an antireflux sub-mucosal tunnel and the other end is hemmed to the skin. Self-catheterization is very easy. All patients are dry but the rate of complications was very high: 77%--8 leakage through the bladder neck imposing one or two re-operations. 10 uretero-hydronephrosis related to a small and hypertonic bladder: enterocystop

Bowel perforation with suprapubic cystostomy Report of two cases.

Two patients with small bowel perforation that occurred during suprapubic catheter insertion are described. Insertion of the catheter with a trocar and with transurethral sound, respectively, was responsible for the perforation. These perforations occurred despite preliminary bladder distention. Small bowel injury was slight in both patients, and neither patient required resection. In 1 patient, the ileocutaneous fistula closed spontaneously, and in the other, oversewing the perforation only was necessary; neither patient has known residual complications.

[Continent cystostomies - indications, surgical technique, complications and management].

INTRODUCTION: To specifically introduce continent cystostomy - indications, surgical technique, complications and management - to the nurses working in a urology department. METHOD: The present article is based on a review of the literature and author's experience in continent cystostomy. RESULTS: Continent cystostomy is a neo-conduit placed between the bladder and the anterior abdominal wall using the digestive tract. It is usually performed in patients with bladder voiding dysfunction who cannot undergo clean self-intermittent catheterization through the urethra. The high success rate (>84

Tube cystostomy for treatment of obstructive urolithiasis in small ruminants.

Tube cystostomy was used to treat 13 goats and two sheep with obstructive urolithiasis. The cystostomy tube was intermittently occluded 3 to 4 days after placement to determine if urine could be voided through the urethra. If the animal showed no discomfort during urination after the cystostomy tube had been occluded for several days, the tube was removed. This procedure was successful in relieving urethral obstruction in 12 animals. The mean time until the animal could urinate freely and until the cystostomy tube was removed was 11.5 and 14.4 days respectively. Follow-up was available for 10

Development of the invaginated sleeve technique for continent cystostomies in dogs.

Two studies were undertaken in dogs to evaluate oblique tunnels through bladder walls lined by urothelium for use in continent cystostomies. In the first study, the tracts were lined completely by urothelium by 10 weeks, but tract calibre reduced considerably after stent removal and periluminal fibrosis was a prominent feature. In the second study a tubularised partial-thickness pedicle graft was invaginated through an oblique tunnel in the bladder wall, with the graft extending extravesically and then being wrapped in omentum. This technique provided complete urothelial covering by 2 weeks wi

[Trans-appendicular continent cystostomy in the management of the neurogenic bladder].

The comfort obtained in some cases of neurogenic bladder of the girl, thanks to unsterile self catheterization, and usual absence of septic complications, incite to search for a process which could be used for the boys as well as girls in those cases where urethral catheterization cannot be done. What's more, if the catheterization is easy to achieve even by young children and if the process brings complete dryness, almost perfect conditions of comfort would be achieved. A cystostomy with a continent opening easy to catheterize and associated with a closure of the vesical neck, was the objecti

Ultrasound-guided suprapubic cystostomy catheter placement in the emergency department.

The purpose of this article is to describe a series of patients undergoing ultrasound-guided suprapubic cystostomy catheter placement in the Emergency Department. A series of 17 consecutive patients who underwent emergent real-time ultrasound-guided suprapubic cystostomy in the ED over a 2-year period is reported. The procedure was facilitated by direct ultrasound imaging of the bladder using a Digital Sonoace 5500 machine. Procedural notes and follow-up records were analyzed for efficacy, safety, and complications. The results demonstrated that trans-abdominal ultrasound confirmed urinary ret

Closed suprapubic cystostomy: a cost-effective method for development countries.

Acute retention of urine is a fairly common emergency problem in medical practice. Suprapubic diversion through a closed or open cystostomy is a standard procedure. In developing countries where there is paucity of skilled manpower and adequate facilities, patients' suffering may be unduly prolonged through delay. This simple cost-effective method was carried out in 15 patients without untoward morbidity. The procedure is particularly useful in rural communities where elaborate facilities are non-existent.

Endoscopic cystostomy and biliary sphincterotomy for choledochoceles: A pediatric case series.

Management of choledochoceles (type III choledochal cysts) in children varies. We highlight the potential role of endoscopic management of choledochoceles with cystostomy and biliary sphincterotomy through a series of three successfully treated pediatric patients aged 12-13 at our tertiary center. Patients presented with symptoms including abdominal pain and pancreatitis. Choledochoceles were identified by preprocedure imaging on magnetic resonance imaging, with sizes ranging between 7 and 15 mm in maximal diameter. Histology revealed two choledochoceles lined by biliary epithelium and one by

Early and late complications of suprapubic cystostomy - Report of two cases.

Suprapubic cystostomy (SPC), although a common procedure, may be associated with complications. We present two cases of transperitoneal tract of SPC. The early complication was ileal perforation, resulting in perforation peritonitis and late complication was incisional hernia around the SPC tract. Avoiding peritoneal violation helps in preventing such complications.

Laparoscopic-assisted cystotomy and cystostomy for treatment of cystic calculus in a gelding.

OBJECTIVE: To report laparoscopic-assisted cystotomy and inguinal cystostomy for treating bladder urolithiasis in a gelding. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report. ANIMALS: Twelve-year-old Appaloosa gelding. METHODS: A laparoscopic approach was used to locate and grasp the bladder, which was exteriorized through an enlarged instrument portal for cystotomy to remove the calculus. During withdrawal, the calculus fragmented into multiple pieces. To avoid urethral occlusion and facilitate elimination of these fragments, an inguinal cystostomy was created. The seromuscular layer of the bladder was circu

Uretero-neo-cystostomy in renal transplantation. Is an antireflux mechanism mandatory?

We report a retrospective analysis of 120 kidney transplantations in which a simple end-to-end ureteric implantation in the bladder without antireflux mechanism was made. From this study no greater incidence of vesico-ureteric reflux could be demonstrated and, even when present, reflux neither interfered with graft function nor caused an increased incidence of recurrent urinary tract infections. The incidence of other urological complications (leakage, obstruction) being equal, this very simple technique yielded in our hands the best results and we recommend its use in kidney transplantation.
