[Cytomegalovirus infection in gastroenterology].

AIM: To highlight the relevance of gastrointestinal manifestations of cytomegalovirus infection (CMVI), to highlight the main risk factors for the development of this pathology, current trends in diagnosis and treatment. KEY POINTS: CMVI is one of the most common opportunistic diseases, characterized by a variety of manifestations from asymptomatic to severe generalized forms affecting internal organs and body systems. The prevalence of CMVI worldwide ranges from 20 to 95%. Particular attention is paid to timely diagnosis, treatment and prevention of CMVI. The "gold standard" in the diagnosis

Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is a leading cause of hearing loss and neurological disabilities in children, with the disease burden and disabilities due to cCMV greater than many other well recognized childhood conditions. A minority of infants with cCMV will have symptoms at birth. Infants with symptomatic cCMV are at higher risk for sequelae than those born without symptoms. The majority of infants with cCMV are asymptomatic at birth, but 10%-15% will develop hearing loss. Although clinical symptoms can help predict which infants will have sensorineural hearing loss, among asym

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Each year, thousands of children are born with or develop permanent disabilities such as hearing loss, vision loss, motor and cognitive deficits from congenital CMV infection (cCMV). However, awareness of cCMV and its associated sequelae is very low in pregnant women and healthcare providers. Both targeted and universal approaches to screen newborns for CMV infection are now achievable due to recent scientific advances including the development of a rapid, high-throughput method for detecting CMV in saliva, the efficacy of antiviral treatment in symptomatic infants, and the demonstration of co

Placental Cytomegalovirus Infection.

In the United States, cytomegalovirus is the most common congenital viral infection and the number 1 cause of nonhereditary sensorineural hearing loss. The vast majority of infants may be asymptomatic, especially if cytomegalovirus is contracted later in the pregnancy, and some symptoms may have a delayed onset. Therefore, it is important for the pathologist to identify the common histologic findings to help confirm the diagnosis so the child can be followed for late sequelae. Histologic examination of the placenta is important in live births and in cases of intrauterine fetal demise. Chronic

Cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy.

PURPOSE: Due to the severe risk of long-term sequelae, prenatal cytomegalovirus infection is of particular importance amongst intrauterine viral infections. This review summarizes the current knowledge about CMV infection in pregnancy. METHODS: A search of the Medline and Embase database was done for articles about CMV infection in pregnany. We performed a detailed review of the literature in view of diagnosis, epidemiology and management of CMV infection in pregnancy. RESULTS: The maternal course of the infection is predominantly asymptomatic; the infection often remains unrecognized until

Cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy.

OBJECTIVES: To review the principles of prenatal diagnosis of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and to describe the outcomes of the affected pregnancies. OUTCOMES: Effective management of fetal infection following primary and secondary maternal CMV infection during pregnancy. Neonatal signs include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), microcephaly, hepatosplenomegaly, petechiae, jaundice, chorioretinitis, thrombocytopenia and anemia, and long-term sequelae consist of sensorineural hearing loss, mental retardation, delay of psychomotor development, and visual impairment. These guid

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a serious health problem. The obstacles for limiting this infection are the lack of public awareness on this issue, especially owing to the asymptomatic nature of CMV infections, the inefficacy of therapy, and the unsuccessful vaccine trials to date. It is therefore important to organize the current data to estimate the results and to report that the development of a vaccine against CMV must be of the highest priority.

[Congenital cytomegalovirus infection].

INTRODUCTION: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most frequent cause of intrauterine infection and an important cause of auditory system damage and mental retardation in humans. Clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic form to lethal systemic dissemination. OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical and laboratories manifestations, age at the moment of diagnostic, treatment and diagnostic test used in congenital cytomegalovirus infection. POPULATION, MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, retrospective and descriptive study. Clinical histories of congenital CMV infected infants evaluated by Infectology

[Congenital cytomegalovirus infection].

The cytomegalovirus (CMV) is responsible for the most common congenital infection and represents the most important cause of mental disability and non hereditary sensorineural deafness in infants. One percent to 5% of women show symptoms of infection during pregnancy. Forty thousand newborns are affected by this infection in the United States every year, at a cost of 1.9 billion dollars; in Italy, approximately 5,500 infected newborns are expected each year, including 350 in Lombardia alone. In 90% of the cases, the infected newborns present no symptoms at birth, but, in 10% to 15% of these ca

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection in humans. Congenital CMV infection can follow either a primary or recurrent maternal infection, but the likelihood of fetal infection and the risk of associated damage is higher after a primary infection. Approximately 90% of congenitally infected infants are asymptomatic at birth. Jaundice, petechiae, and hepatosplenomegaly are the most frequently noted clinical triad in symptomatic infants. More frequent and more severe sequelae occur in symptomatic infants, notably psychomotor hearing loss and retardation. Congenital CMV infecti

[Congenital cytomegalovirus infection].

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) belongs to the herpesvirus family. Its distribution is ubiquitous in man and many other mammals. CMV causes a typical cytopathic effect with enlargement of the cells that contain intranuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions. CMV is spread directly or by a contact with secretions. Nosocomial transmission can occur during blood transfusion or organ transplantation. Virus excretion after infection continues for a long time. CMV is the most frequent cause of congenital infections (1-2% children). A foetal infection can lead to a preterm labour. Most of CMV congenital infections ar

[Congenital cytomegalovirus infection.].

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is frequent. Symptomatic disease at birth is infrequent but very severe. In most cases the infection is totally asymptomatic but neurosensorial damage can occur in 10 % to 15 % of children, hearing loss being the most frequent. Maternal or neonatal screening is the only way to recognise asymptomatic disease. Wether the screening has to be done, and if so when, will be discussed here.

[Cytomegalovirus infection--a review].

Once considered to be an infrequent cause of human disease, human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is now recognized as being one of the most common congenital infections leading to birth defects, and furthermore, it is a common opportunistic infection associated with serious illness and death in immunocompromised patients. CMV has been assigned to the herpes family of viruses. It is an enveloped DNA virus. About 50-60 percent of Danish blood donors have anti-CMV. This figure is dependent on age, race, socioeconomic status, sexual behaviour and geographical area. Patients exhibiting symptoms and signs of
