Four simple stimuli that induce host-seeking and blood-feeding behaviors in two mosquito species, with a clue to DEET's mode of action.

Bioassays in a wind tunnel showed that a combination of four stimuli releases intense host-seeking and blood-feeding behavioral responses from females of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The stimuli are carbon dioxide, water vapor, warmth, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mosquitoes responded to this combination with a repertoire of blood-feeding behaviors that included upwind flight, landing, probing, and engorgement. Absence of carbon dioxide, water vapor, or ATP from the combination of stimuli or exposure to temperatures 12° C below

Cymbopogon citratus and Lippia multiflora essential oils as alternative repellent to DEET against Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

Personal protective tools, such as repellents, play a vital role in preventing mosquito-borne disease transmission. Although N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), a synthetic repellent, is effective against insects, it may cause allergic reactions. Therefore, there is a need to explore effective alternative repellents exhibiting fewer side effects. Here, we assessed the repellent activity of essential oils (EOs) from Lippia multiflora and Cymbopogon citratus alone and in combination, against Anopheles populations, using the Human Landing Catch (HLC) method in Dogona, Burkina Faso. For this purpos

Anopheles gambiae odorant binding protein crystal complex with the synthetic repellent DEET: implications for structure-based design of novel mosquito repellents.

Insect odorant binding proteins (OBPs) are the first components of the olfactory system to encounter and bind attractant and repellent odors emanating from various sources for presentation to olfactory receptors, which trigger relevant signal transduction cascades culminating in specific physiological and behavioral responses. For disease vectors, particularly hematophagous mosquitoes, repellents represent important defenses against parasitic diseases because they effect a reduction in the rate of contact between the vectors and humans. OBPs are targets for structure-based rational approaches

Persulfate activation by biochar and iron: Effect of chloride on formation of reactive species and transformation of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET).

Fenton-like processes using persulfate for oxidative water treatment and contaminant removal can be enhanced by the addition of redox-active biochar, which accelerates the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and increases the yield of reactive species that react with organic contaminants. However, available data on the formation of non-radical or radical species in the biochar/Fe(III)/persulfate system are inconsistent, which limits the evaluation of treatment efficiency and applicability in different water matrices. Based on competition kinetics calculations, we employed different scavengers and p

Protective efficacy and user acceptability of DEET and Vetiver essential oil repellents against Anopheles dirus (Diptera: Culicidae): semi-field and community-based evaluations.

Topical repellents are considered as valuable supplementary tools for reducing vector-borne disease transmission risk by preventing mosquito bites. Plant-based formulations have attracted growing interest as safer, more acceptable alternatives to synthetic repellents, yet evidence for their real-world effectiveness remains limited. This study evaluated the protective efficacy of two topical repellents, DEET and Vetiver essential oil (Vetiver E.O.) against Anopheles dirus Peyton & Harrison, a main malaria vector species, through semi-field system (SFS) trials. These tests were followed by a nin

Photodegradation of commercial insect repellents containing DEET and IR-3535 under ultraviolet light associated or not with chemical ultraviolet filters evaluated by Raman spectroscopy.

The use of insect repellents in areas with high solar radiation exposure has increased significantly due to dengue and chikungunya epidemics in Brazil. However, limited research exists on the photostability of these substances under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This study aimed to evaluate the photolability of two common insect repellents, N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) and ethyl 3-[acetyl(butyl)amino]propanoate (IR-3535), and commercial products containing these active ingredients, including combinations with selected chemical UV filters, under simulated UV radiation using Raman spectros

Field evaluation of the efficacy and persistence of insect repellents DEET, IR3535, and KBR 3023 against Anopheles gambiae complex and other Afrotropical vector mosquitoes.

Synthetic insect repellents, IR3535 and KBR 3023 (also known as picaridin, or by the trade name Bayrepel, were tested in Burkina Faso against mosquito vectors of disease to compare their relative efficacy and persistence profiles to those of the 'gold standard' DEET. Collection of >49000 mosquitoes (approximately 95% belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex) showed that after an exposure of 10h, KBR 3023 produced the highest protection against anophelines, followed by DEET, then IR3535. The response of aedines was more variable. By fitting a logistic plane model we estimated 95% effective do

Xenobiotic Metabolizing Enzyme Response of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to Benzophenone-3 and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide.

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) are ingredients of personal care products. Despite the frequent occurrence of both compounds in aquatic environments and the fact that fish are exposed to these chemicals together, their combined effects on xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes and antioxidant enzyme activities have not been studied in aquatic organisms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the combination of BP-3 and DEET on cytochrome P450 and antioxidant system in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). For this purpose, juvenile male rainbow trout samples wer

Subchronic dermal application of N,N-diethyl m-toluamide (DEET) and permethrin to adult rats, alone or in combination, causes diffuse neuronal cell death and cytoskeletal abnormalities in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, and Purkinje neuron loss in the cerebellum.

N,N-Diethyl m-toluamide (DEET) and permethrin have been implicated as potential neurotoxic agents that may have played an important role in the development of illnesses in some veterans of the Persian Gulf War. To determine the effect of subchronic dermal application of these chemicals on the adult brain, we evaluated histopathological alterations in the brain of adult male rats following a daily dermal dose of DEET (40 mg/kg in 70% ethanol) or permethrin (0.13 mg/kg in 70% ethanol) or a combination of the two for 60 days. Control rats received a daily dermal dose of 70% ethanol for 60 days. A

A comparison of topical formulations for the prevention of human schistosomiasis.

Recently, a dimeticone formulation has been shown to be effective at preventing Schistosoma cercariae infecting skin, while DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), a highly effective insecticide, has been shown to have activity against cercariae. Seven formulations, 3 containing DEET, were prepared and applied to excised human skin in Franz cells for 1 h. Schistosoma cercariae were applied for 30 min at 1 and 24 h, and the number that penetrated the skin calculated (n = 9). DEET could not be incorporated into the dimeticone formulation, yet it remained the most effective at preventing cercarial penetr

Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) biting deterrence: structure-activity relationship of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.

In this study we evaluated the biting deterrent effects of a series of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids against Aedes aegypti (L), yellow fever mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) using the K & Dbioassay module system. Saturated (C6:0 to C16:0 and C18:0) and unsaturated fatty acids (C11:1 to C14:1, C16:1, C18:1, and C18:2) showed biting deterrence index (BDI) values significantly greater than ethanol, the negative control. Among the saturated fatty acids, mid chain length acids (C10:0 to C13:0) showed higher biting deterrence than short (C6:0 to C9:0) and long chain length acids (C14:0 to C18:0

Short report: prevention of Schistosoma mansoni infections in mice by the insect repellents AI3-37220 and N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide.

N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) has recently been reported to kill cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni in vitro. In addition, it blocked cercarial entry into mouse tail skin. We confirmed these results and compared the efficacy of DEET to a second insect repellent, 1-(3-Cyclohexen-1-yl-carbonyl)-2-methylpiperidine (AI3-37220), in preventing S. mansoni infections in mice. Both AI3-37220 and DEET conferred 100% protection against S. mansoni infection via percutaneous exposure to cercariae.
