Neurological sequelae of the dancing eye syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Fifty-four patients with dancing eye syndrome (DES), presenting over a 25-year period, were reviewed retrospectively. One third of them were on active follow up at the time of the study. Malignancy was uncommon, diagnosed in only 4 patients, neuroblastoma in 3 cases and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in 1. An intercurrent illness preceded onset of DES in 51% of the children and was of equivocal significance. There was no clear temporal relationship to immunization. The acute phase of the illness was severe and caused total immobilization in 88% of patients. A favourable initia

[Childhood dancing eye syndrome in occult neuroblastoma].

The case of a two year-old boy is described with dancing eyes syndrome (DES) together with ganglioneuroblastoma. Surgical removal of the tumour and ACTH therapy resulted in rapid improvement, and an almost symptome-free condition. The literature is reviewed. Need of vigorous search for an occult neuroblastoma in DES is pointed out, since the early diagnosis and tumour's surgery can significantly improve the outcome.

Functional assessment of high level ice-dancing.

In these studies the anthropometric characteristics and some functional characteristics of ice-dancers are analysed. It has been shown that the maximum oxygen uptake is similar to that of classical ballet dancers. Tests effected on the ice revealed a high production of lactate, the involvement of the anaerobic metabolism, and high heart rates. It is concluded that the high production of lactate during the free dance on ice is due to the isometric muscular contraction, necessary to maintain certain positions.

Assessment of musculoskeletal pain in dance focusing on dance-style related differences.

Objectives: Pain in dance may be related to the high specific load on the musculoskeletal system caused by dance techniques. Up to the present, data on pain-relevant aspects considering the dance style as a contributing factor to pain occurrence in dance are still pending. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare dance-style specific pain with regard to prevalence, localization, subjective pain perception, duration, frequency, temporary dynamics and pain evaluation in dancers of the two popular dance styles (ballet and contemporary dance). Methods: The quantitative cross-sectional obser

Dancing for Health and Wellbeing: A Feasibility Study of Examining Health Impacts of Online Dancing among Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is recommended in the management of patients with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) to improve health outcomes. Dance is one such form of PA which is meaningful, valuable, enjoyable and has demonstrated positive physical and mental health effects. METHODS: With pre-post design, 16 patients, members of the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association, were enrolled in this study. Once weekly, 75-min dance sessions were delivered for eight weeks via Zoom by an experienced choreographer. Participants completed Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire Self-Administered Standardised Format (C

My first dance.

Many emotions are generated within a medical consultation. These feelings are often shared among the doctor, patient, and family. In this piece, these emotions are explored as I describe them deeply during my first encounter with a Huntington's disease patient, bringing the challenges of the situation, mistakes, and the learning that emerged. Understanding the possible sentiments and how to balance these emotions may be essential to prepare the neurologist in training for the challenges inherent in treating a patient with a rare disease.

Injuries in Irish dance.

Irish dance is growing in popularity and competitiveness; however, very little research has focused specifically on this genre of dance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of dance injuries incurred by Irish dancers. A chart review was performed to identify all injuries associated with Irish dance seen in the sports medicine or orthopaedic clinics at the investigators' hospital over an 11-year period. "Injury" was defined as any dance-related pain or disorder that led to evaluation in the clinics. Survey data were also collected from study participants. Ultimately, 255 patients

Tendon injuries in dance.

Professional ballet dancers require an extraordinary anatomic, physiologic, and psychologic makeup to achieve and sustain their level of ability and activity. They are subject to a myriad of injuries as a result of the extreme demands of this profession. Tendon injuries are common and often coexist with other pathologies of the bone, ligaments, and psyche. It is critical that the dance doctor not examine the tendon injury in isolation, but rather the cause of the injury, either intrinsic from anatomic malalignment or from external sources, including poor form.

Ocular filariasis: "Dancing sensation in the anterior chamber".

We report a case of ocular filariasis in a 28-year-old male who presented with a 2-month history of irritated acute red eye. Examination revealed a living and active large worm dancing in the anterior chamber of the left eye causing acute iridocyclitis, leading to drop in vision to 6/36. The worm whose size was approximately 33 mm in length was extracted under local anesthesia in toto using viscoelastics without damaging the ocular structures. Microscopic examination confirmed adult Wuchereria bancrofti.

Dancing for Healthy Aging: Functional and Metabolic Perspectives.

CONTEXT: Dancing has been used as a form of exercise to improve functional and metabolic outcomes during aging. The field lacks randomized, clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating metabolic outcomes related to dance interventions, but dancing may be a form of exercise that could induce positive effects on the metabolic health of older adults. However, primary studies seem very heterogonous regarding the trial designs, characteristics of the interventions, the methods for outcomes assessments, statistical powers, and methodological quality. OBJECTIVE: The current research team intended to review the

Dancing to death: A case of heat stroke.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency which may lead to mortality unless diagnosed early and treated effectively. Heat stroke may manifest rapidly, hence making it difficult to differentiate it from other clinical causes in a collapsed victim.1 We are presenting a case report of twelve patients who were admitted to our emergency department from a music festival held on 13-15th of March 2014. They developed complications arising from a combination of severe adverse weather condition, prolonged outdoor physical exertion due to long hours of dancing and drug-use, resulting in heat stroke. Three of t

Dancing eye syndrome as first symptom of neuroblastoma.

BACKGROUND: "Dancing eye syndrome", also called Kinsbourne syndrome or Opsoclonus-Myoclonus-Ataxia Syndrome (OMS) is a rare neurological disorder that in children is frequently associated to occult, low-grade neuroblastoma (NB) (>50% of the cases). OMS may also be triggered by infections and it is often associated to developmental impairment and disability. CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss the case of a 16 months old female with acutely onset of OMS associated to occult stage III NB. CONCLUSIONS: OMS represents a diagnostic challenge for pediatric clinicians. The suspect of OMS imposes the s

The Development of the Dance Smart Intervention: A Céilí Dance Exercise Intervention for People Living With Dementia and Their Care Partners (Dance Smart Intervention).

Dance is a form of exercise that engages motor, cognitive, social, and emotional skills (Charras et al., 2020). Céilí dance is a traditional Irish social dance offering physical and psychological health benefits, with the added benefit of a social element. People living with dementia and care partners have low levels of physical activity (PA) despite understanding the range of benefits (van Alphen et al., 2016). This study aimed to develop a person-centred dance - based exercise intervention for people living with dementia and care partners. The Medical Research Council Framework (MRCF) and be

Dance floors as injury risk: analysis and evaluation of acute injuries caused by dance floors in professional dance with regard to preventative aspects.

UNLABELLED: A dance floor is often the only support of movements in dance. A dance floor surface that shows deficiencies, can result in acute injuries and chronic problems. Although the significance of an adequate dance floor is well known, there is still a lack of differentiated analyses of dance floor-related acute injuries. OBJECTIVE: This study presents data on acute injuries exclusively caused by the dance floor. METHODS: The data were obtained from standardized work accident reports from consultants (F 1000), documentary accident records from all Berlin theatres, a state ballet school

Dance partner or dance floor?: exogenous factors resulting in accidents in professional dancers.

OBJECTIVE: Injury prevention in professional dancers is very important due to the high risk for acute injuries posing a threat to dancers' careers. Causative factors of acute injuries in professional dance can be divided into exogenous and endogenous factors. Although both are known in professional dance, there is still a lack of data to have a differentiated view. The aim of this study is to analyze exogenous factors resulting in work accidents of professional dancers. METHODS: The data for the evaluation were obtained from work accident reports (n = 1,438, female 722, male 716) from six Ber

A Solo Dance or a Tango?

Previous studies have identified genetic factors and Epstein-Barr virus underlying nasopharyngeal carcinoma. A hypothesis postulated that the local buildup of HCl, mediated by hydrogen bond donors and acceptors and basic amino acids, causes cancer. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidences are high in the humid southern coastal China, Southeast Asia, and Mediterranean regions, but not in the noncoastal and nonhumid southern Yunnan Province, China, and nonhumid Central China. The nearly saturated humidity in the Huinan period in Guangdong can trigger the expression of proteins with extensive hydrogen
