The authors present two siblings suffering from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. One of them also had the Dandy-Walker malformation. His seizures were difficult to control with anticonvulsant drugs, and somnolence and cerebellar ataxia easily occurred during administration of low dose anticonvulsants. On the other hand, his brother did not have this malformation, and his seizures were easily controlled. The relationship of seizure control to the Dandy-Walker malformation is discussed.

The authors describe a case of Dandy-Walker syndrome. In the light of morphological examination it seems that the membrane obturating the IV ventricle is derived from the posterior medullary velum. Of essential significancy for the development of Dandy-Walker syndrome may be increased pressure in the ventricular system which appears probably at the time of cerebellum development as suggested by data from the literature and the observations of the authors. The importance of cranial trauma for the manifestation of clinical features of increased intracranial pressure in the child developing norma

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by underdevelopment or dysplasia of the cerebellar vermis, expansion of the fourth ventricle and posterior fossa cistern. The incidence is aboutapproximately 1/25000-1/35000. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of DWS are not completely clear. It is mostly considered to be a multifactorial genetic disease that is related to both genetic factors and environmental factors. There is no large sample size analysis of the chromosomal profile of DWS up to now. This study

The paper describes a so far unreported combination of Dandy-Walker syndrome and chronic hereditary polyneuropathy in 2 boys. One of the boys has a de- and remyelinating motor and sensory polyneuropathy, with either an autosomal recessive mode of inheritence or a sporadic occurrence. The other has an autosomal dominant form of mild polyneuropathy with tomaculum formations in myelinated fibers, corresponding to hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies.

A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for delayed puberty. At birth, he had macrocephalia and showed delayed physical and mental development. At 9 years of age, right cryptorchism was diagnosed. His parents had noticed that he could not recognize any smells since his infancy. Physical examination on admission revealed ocular hypertelorism, high myopia, high arched palate, and intermittent external strabismus. Sense of smell was scaled out by olfactometry. External genitalia were infantile. Neurological examination showed on IQ of 83, and mild truncal ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging

A 2-month-old female presented with nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Dandy-Walker syndrome. At the fist examination, coloboma involving the optic disc in both eyes was detected. The left eye showed microphthalmos with sclerocornea, persistent pupillary membrane, hypoplasia of the iris stroma, and bullous retinal detachment near the optic disc. Chromosomal analysis revealed a mosaic pattern: 46, XX/47, XXX. Increased intracranial pressure associated with Dandy-Walker syndrome was detected by a neurosurgeon at the age of 3 months. The patient was followed for several weeks, and then nonrh

A 30-year-old retired veteran was asymptomatic for two decades; he had carried out normal everyday living activities and was self-supporting. It was not until he was struck by an automobile, which resulted in head trauma, that the Dandy-Walker syndrome was incidentally discovered by computed tomography. Most patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome or malformation are infants and seldom live into adulthood. Therefore, this patient is one of the very few patients with this malformation who remained in a state of cerebrospinal fluid compensation and lived to adulthood. The head trauma he received

A boy with the Dandy-Walker syndrome associated with multiple congenital abnormalities is described. Chromosomal analyses revealed an abnormal chromosome 21, inherited from his father who had a balanced translocation involving chromosomes 12 and 21: rcp(12;21)(q24.1;q22.1). The clinical features of this patient are compared with published descriptions for duplication 12q24----qter and a review of the literature pertaining to chromosomal anomalies found in other patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome is presented.

Dandy-Walker syndrome in monozygotic twins is reported. The twins reported, presented with delayed development, big head and dysmorphic features. In addition, there were significant cafe-au-lait spots on the trunk and other minor features consistent with the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. To the best of our knowledge, Dandy-Walker syndrome in combination with neurofibromatosis in monozygotic twins has not been previously reported.

Bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) presents in childhood and is usually associated with lesions of the third ventricle. This disorder is characterized by stereotypical head movements of the type "yes-yes" (up and down) at a frequency of 2 to 3 Hz. Rarely, movements of the type "no-no" (side-to-side) are described. There are a few hypotheses to explain the mechanism responsible for BHDS, but its real pathophysiological characteristics are still unknown. The authors describe the case of a child born with hydrocephalus and Dandy-Walker syndrome. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted in the chi

BACKGROUND: Congenital malformations are the major cause of infant mortality in the United States, but their contribution to overall racial disparity--a major public health concern--is poorly understood. We sought to estimate the contribution of a congenitally acquired central nervous system lesion, Dandy-Walker Syndrome (DWS), to black-white disparity in infant mortality.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the New York State Congenital Malformations Registry, an ongoing population-based validated surveillance system. We compared black to white infants with respect to infant, neonatal, and post

We present our experience with the treatment of 13 patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome. The common presenting symptom and associated central nervous system anomaly were enlargement of head and occipital encephalocele, respectively. Eleven out of 13 patients were treated surgically after stabilization of systemic medical status. Two patients could not be operated because of poor medical condition. In 6 patients with an opened passage between posterior fossa cyst and lateral ventricle, cystoperitoneal shunt system with medium pressure valve was the treatment of choice. In 5 patients with no rela

5p deletion syndrome commonly known as cri du chat is well described in affected neonates with catlike cry and hypotonia. Karyotyping will usually show a deletion of the short arm of one chromosome 5 with variable breakpoints. Only a few cases have been reported prenatally, and the fetal form of the syndrome has not been clearly individualised. We report a new case of 5p deletion syndrome diagnosed prenatally in association with Dandy-Walker syndrome and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Other brain anomalies have been reported previously, but this unusual association suggests the use of a spec

INTRODUCTION: Dandy-Walker syndrome is a rare congenital brain malformation characterized by cerebellar vermis agenesis or hypoplasia, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle and a large posterior fossa causing upward displacement of tentorium and torcula. In this paper, we present a case of bilateral choanal atresia with Dandy-Walker Syndrome in a female newborn.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a female patient who was born at 38th weeks of gestation via emergency cesarean section due to non-reassuring cardiotocography and abnormal antenatal ultrasounds findings. The imaging reveal

A 32-year-old woman was diagnosed with chronic bilateral frontoparietal and interhemispheric subdural haematomas (SDH). Abdominal ultrasonography revealed chronic renal failure due to bilateral large cystic kidneys. Brain MRI demonstrated Dandy-Walker malformation associated with hypoplastic vermis, in addition to the chronic subdural haematomas. This association of polycystic kidneys with Dandy-Walker malformation has been referred to as Goldston or cerebrorenal syndrome. The case is rare and is the first to be reported in an adult patient. The relevant literature is reviewed.
