A new species of deep-sea sponge-associated shrimp from the North-West Pacific (Decapoda, Stenopodidea, Spongicolidae).

A new species of the deep-sea spongicolid genus Spongicoloides Hansen, 1908 is described and illustrated based on material from the northwestern Pacific. Spongicoloides weijiaensissp. n. was found inside a hexactinellid sponge, Euplectella sp., sampled by the Chinese manned submersible "Jiaolong" at depths of 2279 m near the Weijia Guyot, in the Magellan Seamount Chain. The new species can be distinguished from all congeneric species by several morphological features, involving gill formula, spination of the carapace, antennal scale, third pereiopod, telson and uropod, posteroventral teeth of

Two new crayfishes of the genus Cambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae) from Northern Alabama and South Central Tennessee, U.S.A.

Multivariate and univariate statistical analyses of morphometric data and examination of morphological characters of the crayfish species Cambarus (Hiaticambarus) longirostris revealed the existence of two undescribed species from populations previously considered to be C. longirostris in tributaries of the Tennessee River in north Alabama and central south Tennessee. Cambarus (Hiaticambarus) andersoni and Cambarus (Hiaticambarus) diupalma differed from C. longirostris and from each other in aspects of chela morphometrics and in the presence or absence of qualitative characters. Sublethal toxicity of untreated and treated stormwater Zn concentrations on the foraging behaviour of Paratya australiensis (Decapoda: Atyidae).

Aquatic organisms use chemical cues to perform key ecological behaviours such as locating food. Anthropogenic pollutants have the potential to disrupt these behaviours by down-regulating chemoreception. Urban stormwater runoff is a major source of metal pollution, particularly Zn, and is a leading contributor to the degradation of receiving waters. Consequently, significant remedial efforts have focused on using constructed stormwater wetlands to reduce pollutant loads. However, no studies have examined the efficacy of water quality improvements on ecologically relevant behaviours in aquatic b

A new infaunal species of the genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae) from Okinawa, southwestern Japan.

A new porcellanid species of the genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the burrow of an unidentified snapping shrimp of the genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798, on the subtidal coarse sediment in Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. Enosteoides lapis n. sp. is similar to E. melissa (Miyake, 1942) and E. philippinensis Dolorosa Werding, 2014 in the general morphology of the frontal region of the carapace, third thoracic sternite, and ambulatory legs, but is distinguished from both by the dorsal surface of the carapace being more s

Life History Traits of the Snapping Shrimp Alpheus carlae (Decapoda: Alpheidae) from the South-eastern Coast of Brazil.

The life history traits of the snapping shrimp Alpheus carlae were investigated. We evaluated the relative growth, morphological sexual maturity, sexual dimorphism, handedness, fecundity, and egg volume. Sampling was performed monthly in an estuarine region of Cananéia, in the south-eastern coast of Brazil. The following structures were measured to perform the relative growth analysis: length of carapace and second pleonal pleuron, length, width and height of major cheliped propodus, and length of appendix interna and appendix masculina. Juveniles and adults males and females have different gr

Sexual plasticity of Hippolyte inermis Leach (Crustacea, Decapoda): Gene expression of vitellogenin and insulin-like androgenic gland hormone.

Hippolyte inermis is a protandric hermaphroditic shrimp widespread in most Mediterranean seagrass meadows. It has a complex life cycle, because an unknown compound present in benthic diatoms (Cocconeis spp.) induces an early sex reversal in its post-larvae upon ingestion. This change occurs due to the disruption of the androgenic gland (AG) germ cells. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind this unique example of sexual plasticity, we isolated sex-specific genes from the transcriptomes of shrimp collected at various stages of their life cycle. Using Real-Time qPCR, we measured, in wild a

The First Bopyrid Isopod from Hydrothermal Vents: Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. (Isopoda: Epicaridea) Parasitizing Shinkaia crosnieri (Decapoda: Anomura).

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are 'extreme' environments harboring diverse animal communities, powered by chemosynthesis. Though vent-endemic macrofauna have been a center of interest since their discovery in 1977, macroparasites have received little attention. Here, we report a bopyrid epicaridean isopod infesting the symbiotic munidopsid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 from three vent fields of Okinawa Trough, and describe it as Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. Although morphologically close to the congeners Pleurocryptella formosa Bonnier, 1900, Pleurocryptella wolffi

Description of Paraxiopsis/ kensleyi/ n. sp., a new axiid lobster from the Gulf of Mexico (Crustacea: Decapoda: Axiidea).

A new species of axiid was discovered during sampling offshore deep banks on the middle continental shelf off Louisiana. Paraxiopsis kensleyi n. sp. appears to inhabit interstices and cavities of coralline algal rubble, rhodoliths, coral rubble, and other eroded calcareous substrates. Weakly separated from Eutrichocheles Wood-Mason, 1876 on the basis of morphology, present assignments of western Atlantic species to Paraxiopsis de Man, 1905 are regarded as provisional. The new species is described morphologically, and the coloration of freshly captured specimens is documented and compared to re

Morphological and histological description of the midgut caeca in true crabs (Malacostraca: Decapoda: Brachyura): origin, development and potential role.

BACKGROUND: The decapods are a major group of crustaceans that includes shrimps, prawns, crayfishes, lobsters, and crabs. Several studies focused on the study of the digestive system of the decapods, constituted by the oesophagus, stomach, midgut tract, midgut gland, and hindgut. Nevertheless, in the midgut tract there are associated a set of organs called "midgut caeca", which are among the most controversial and less studied digestive organs of this group. This work used the common spider crab Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 as a model to resolve the origin, development, and potential role of

Are Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Sensitive to Environmental Concentrations of Chlorpyrifos Exposed to the Freshwater Crab, Zilchiopsis collastinensis (Decapoda; Trichodactylidae)?

Global trends in pesticide use can increase aquatic pollution and affect resident fisheries. Crabs exposed to organophosphate pesticides, such as chlorpyrifos, may increase production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), affecting the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance. Zichiopsis collastinensis crabs were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of chlorpyrifos (0.1 and 0.5 µg L-1). Effects on the oxidative stress enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferases, glutathione reductase, and on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and hydrogen peroxide concentrations we

Inhibitory effects of cadmium on carbonic anhydrase activity and ionic regulation of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Decapoda, Grapsidae).

This work was aimed at evaluating the gill carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata exposed in vivo to cadmium, at different salinities. The in vivo effect of the specific inhibitor acetazolamide (AZ) was also assayed. Besides, the inhibition of CA activity by different heavy metals (cadmium, copper, zinc) and AZ were evaluated under in vitro conditions. For the in vivo assays, adult males were acclimated to salinities of 2.5 or 30/1000. The corresponding 96-h LC50 of cadmium was 2.69 mg l-1 at 2.5/1000, and > 50 mg l-1 at 30/1000. Cadmium only caused a si

Oil ingestion and genotoxic biomarkers in three swimming crab species (Decapoda, Portunidae) from tropical estuaries affected by oil spills.

The 2019 oil spill along the Brazilian coast represents one of the largest marine contamination events in the region, with evidence of long-term persistence and re-emergence of residues in subsequent years. This study primarily reports the ingestion of oil residues by three swimming crab species (Callinectes danae, C. exasperatus, and C. marginatus) from tropical estuaries in northeastern Brazil following oil resurgences recorded in 2022. Specimens were collected in three estuaries (Atapuz, Suape, and Carneiros) between 2022 and 2023. Oil-like fragments retrieved from stomach contents were cha

On the Larval Sensory Organs and Central Nervous System of the Zoea 1 of the Asian Shore Crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus (Decapoda, Brachyura).

Many decapod crustaceans occupy different habitats during their ontogeny and undergo a niche shift during the transition from the larval to the juvenile phase. Their life cycle comprises pelagic larvae and, in most species, benthic juvenile-adult stages. Already at hatching, decapod larvae possess a wealth of organ systems, necessary to autonomously survive and develop in the plankton. They also exhibit a rich behavioral repertoire to appropriately respond to environmental stimuli such as light, gravity, hydrostatic pressure, tidal currents, temperature, salinity, chemical cues, and food conce

Characterizing the Norway Lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L., Homarida: Decapoda) Maturity of Males in the Mediterranean Sea: Morphological and Physiological Aspects.

In male decapods, such as the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus, sexual maturity is not easily determined by macroscopic examination of gonads and few studies have been conducted on this topic. Sexual maturity is linked to changes in both external morphology and physiology. This study analyzed the maturity of N. norvegicus males in the Central-Western Mediterranean Sea (Sardinia), focusing on primary sexual characteristics (testes and vasa deferentia) and morphometric traits (appendix masculina and petasma). Since the testes showed no macroscopic changes in size during ontogeny, histological
