The Diagnostic Value of Cardiac Deceleration Capacity in Vasovagal Syncope.

BACKGROUND: Increased parasympathetic activity is thought to play important roles in syncope events of patients with vasovagal syncope (VVS). However, direct measurements of the vagal control are difficult. The novel deceleration capacity (DC) of heart rate measure has been used to characterize the vagal modulation. This study aimed to assess vagal control in patients with VVS and evaluate the diagnostic value of the DC in VVS. METHODS: Altogether, 161 consecutive patients with VVS (43±15 years; 62 males) were enrolled. Tilt table test was positive in 101 and negative in 60 patients. Sixty-fi

Agreement between force and deceleration measures during backward somersault landings.

This study examined the agreement between force platform and inertial measurement unit (IMU) measures of backward somersault landings. Seven female gymnasts performed three trials, taking off from a 90 cm vaulting box and using competition landing technique. Two force platforms (1000 Hz) covered with a 6.4 cm thick carpeted landing surface measured the ground reaction forces. One inertial measurement unit (500 Hz) fixed on the second thoracic vertebra measured peak resultant deceleration of the gymnast. Measurement agreement between vertical and resultant peak force measures, and resultant pea

Simplified deceleration method for assessment of resistive forces in cycling.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a simplified deceleration technique for measurement of aerodynamic and rolling resistances in cycling. METHODS: Coast-down tests were performed in level hallways with an experienced cyclist as the rider. Average initial velocities were 2.5-12.8 m x s(-1)) The deceleration technique was simplified by the use on only three switches and a derivation that did not require an assumption that deceleration is constant. The effective frontal area (AC(D)) and coefficient of rolling resistance (CR) were then calculated through a derivation from

Posterior avulsion of the optic nerve due to deceleration trauma.

A patient with complete transection of the optic nerve (posterior avulsion) and explosion of the eyeball, due to an attempted suicide is reported. The symptoms, mechanism of injury and therapeutic possibilities in complete transection and in partial posterior optic nerve avulsions are discussed. Although this case ended up with enucleation, the partial avulsions are not without hope. The importance of team-work is emphasized in polytraumatic patients.

Intrapartum deceleration and acceleration areas are associated with neonatal encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether an association exists between deceleration and acceleration areas on continuous fetal cardiotocography (CTG) and neonatal encephalopathy (NE). METHODS: A single center, retrospective case-control study was conducted to compare CTG characteristics of low-risk pregnancies (35 weeks of gestation or more), complicated by moderate to severe NE with two matched controls for every case. Controls were matched by gestational age and cord blood pH. We analyzed the intrapartum CTG recordings by calculation of the deceleration and acceleration areas and the ratio between

[Deceleration of vascular growth--a cause of varus hip deformity].

The aim of this study was to examine the peculiarities of femoral proximal epiphysis formation following the early disruption of its blood supply. The experiments were performed using 20 albino rats that were operated at postnatal day 18 having their diaphysis and acetabular arteries cut in one extremity (the other extremity serving as control). Starting at postoperational month 2 and up to month 12, 1-2 animals were sacrificed monthly by ether overdosage. Femoral and pelvic bones were removed from both control and experimental extremities, fixed in neutral formalin, decalcified, dehydrated an

Durability of organobentonite-amended liner for decelerating chloroform transport.

Chloroform is added to landfill for suppressing methane generation, which however may transport through landfill liners and lead to contamination of groundwater. To decelerate chloroform transport, the enhanced sorption ability of clay liners following organobentonite addition was tested. In this study, we used batch sorption to evaluate sorption capacity of chloroform to organobentonite, followed by column tests and model simulations for assessing durability of different liners. Results show that adding 10% CTMAB-bentonite (organobentonite synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) inc

Different types of variable decelerations and their effects to neonatal outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Although the only objective finding of intrapartum fetal distress is obtained through the measurement the fetal scalp pH, this invasive procedure is not available in every institution. The careful examination of fetal heart rate tracings for abnormalities, especially of the most commonly seen one, variable decelerations gains great importance under these circumstances. The aim of the present study is to determine the prognostic significance of variable decelerations in intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring. METHODS: A total of 96 fetal heart rate tracings were analysed to assess

Decelerating flow ventilation effects in acute respiratory failure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to analyze the effect of a pressure-regulated volume-controlled ventilation mode on lung mechanics and gas exchange in patients with acute respiratory failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We ventilated 10 patients with two pressure-limited modes: pressure-controlled ventilation (PC) and pressure-regulated volume-controlled ventilation (PRVC) in random order, for 1 hour each. Patients were stabilized on volume-controlled ventilation (VC) for 30 minutes before, between, and at the end of PC and PRVC to reach baseline conditions. At the end of every VC period a

Atrioventricular block during fetal heart rate decelerations.

Electrocardiograms (ECG) was examined in 15 fetuses during fetal heart rate decelerations in labour. Sinus bradycardia was demonstrated in six cases and in two cases inversion of the P wave was seen. In seven cases there was complete dissociation of the P wave from the QRS complex, indicating complete atrioventricular heart block. Many decelerations are vagally mediated, but such cases associated with complete atrioventricular heart block may be due to the effect of hypoxia on the bundle of His.

[Prognostic significance of single decelerations occurring in the antenatal CTG].

Within systematic fetal supervision by CTG of the risk pregnancies sometimes single decelerations of variable type are observed. Most they didn't repeat. In the majority of the cases in follow up pregnancy the child will be born spontaneously without complications. In a lot of other cases, however, there appears fetal distress. For prognostic statistical evaluation of antenatal decelerations we watched prospectively the following groups: 1.43 cases with severe antenatal variable decelerations, 2.39 cases with mild antenatal variable decelerations, 3.88 cases without antenatal decelerations. -

Perinatal outcome of appropriate-weight fetuses with decelerating growth.

INTRODUCTION: To assess the perinatal outcome of fetuses dropping by ≥50 estimated fetal weight (EFW) centiles between the second and third trimester. METHODS: Singleton pregnancies progressing after 32 + 0 weeks, who had their second- and third-trimester scans at our institutions were enrolled in the study. The perinatal outcome of AGA fetuses crossing more than 50 centiles was compared to that of fetuses with FGR, small for gestational age (SGA) and nondecelerating appropriate for gestational age (AGA). The primary perinatal outcomes were perinatal death, neonatal intensive care (NICU) admi

Lactobacillus decelerates cervical epithelial cell cycle progression.

We investigated cell cycle progression in epithelial cervical ME-180 cells during colonization of three different Lactobacillus species utilizing live cell microscopy, bromodeoxyuridine incorporation assays, and flow cytometry. The colonization of these ME-180 cells by L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri, originating from human gastric epithelia and saliva, respectively, was shown to reduce cell cycle progression and to cause host cells to accumulate in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The G1 phase accumulation in L. rhamnosus-colonized cells was accompanied by the up-regulation and nuclear accumulatio

Senile cataracts: evidence for acceleration by diabetes and deceleration by salicylate.

A method is described for determining the natural progression of senile cataracts in humans and whether certain factors accelerate or decelerate this progression. The method consists in plotting the age of the patient against the degree of opacity of the cataract to find the regression relation. A comparison of cataracts from diabetic and nondiabetic patients revealed that diabetes accelerated senile cataract formation, so that there was a difference of 9.6 years in the age of the two groups with more dense cataracts. Plasma tryptophan levels, which are increased in cataract patients, are lowe
