How the "control-fate continuum" helps explain the genetic testing decision-making process: a grounded theory study.

Genetic testing decision-making for cancer predisposition is inherently complex. Understanding the mechanisms and influencing factors of the decision-making process is essential for genetic counselling and has not yet been investigated in Switzerland. This study's aim is thus to provide a theory about the individual's decision-making process regarding genetic testing for cancer predispositions in order to provide medical geneticists and genetic counsellors with insights into the needs and expectations of counsellees. We interviewed at-risk individuals who underwent genetic counselling in a cli

Prediction of conductive hearing loss based on acoustic ear-canal response using a multivariate clinical decision theory.

This study evaluated the accuracy of acoustic response tests in predicting conductive hearing loss in 161 ears of subjects from the age of 2 to 10 yr, using as a "gold standard" the air-bone gap to classify ears as normal or impaired. The acoustic tests included tympanometric peak-compensated static admittance magnitude (SA) and tympanometric gradient at 226 Hz, and admittance-reflectance (YR) measurements from 0.5 to 8 kHz. The performance of individual, frequency-specific, YR test variables as predictors was assessed. By applying logistic regression (LR) and discriminant analysis (DA) techni

Enhancing trust and decision-making in AI-driven construction: Applying cognitive fit theory to interface clarity and alignment.

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly support decision-making in the construction sector, understanding the cognitive mechanisms behind user adoption is essential. Based on Cognitive Fit Theory (CFT), the following research develops and validates a model to examine how interface clarity, cognitive-technical alignment, algorithmic reliability, and decision explainability collectively influence behavioral intent to adopt AI-based decision support tools. Data were gathered from 206 construction professionals utilizing a structured questionnaire and assessed utilizing Partial Least

A Grounded Theory Model of Relationship Decision-Making in Non-Offending Partners of Individuals Accused of Sexual Offending.

Non-offending partners of individuals who have committed sexual offenses often choose to end their relationship given the many negative consequences they face as a result of their partner's offending behavior. Despite a focus on relationships in rehabilitation frameworks and the importance of the relationship for the individual who has offended and their partner, research has thus far failed to examine the process underlying why non-offending partners decide to stay in or leave their relationship following an offense. In this study we developed the first descriptive model of relationship decis

Impaired theory of mind but intact decision-making in Asperger syndrome: implications for the relationship between these cognitive domains.

The relationship between decision making and theory of mind (TOM) has been hardly investigated in patients with asperger syndrome (AS). Here, we show that the AS group (n=25) exhibited deficits on a complex TOM task, yet were unimpaired in a decision-making test. No association was found between these two domains.

Reward Sensitivity and Noise Contribute to Negative Affective Bias: A Learning Signal Detection Theory Approach in Decision-Making.

In patients with mood disorders, negative affective biases - systematically prioritising and interpreting information negatively - are common. A translational cognitive task testing this bias has shown that depressed patients have a reduced preference for a high reward under ambiguous decision-making conditions. The precise mechanisms underscoring this bias are, however, not yet understood. We therefore developed a set of measures to probe the underlying source of the behavioural bias by testing its relationship to a participant's reward sensitivity, value sensitivity and reward learning rate.

The Development of Stakeholder-Driven and Theory-Informed Depression Care Decision Aid for Ethnoracially Diverse Communities in Primary Care.

Guided by the Ottawa Decision Support Framework, we created a depression care decision aid for Latinx and African American individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) at a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers. We surveyed 94 African American and Latinx individuals with MDD about their decision making needs. Focus groups elaborated on these preferences. Results show that about half of the sample preferred a collaborative role in decision making. Respondents report greater preference for receiving information about care compared to lower preferences for shared decision making. Focu

Decision making and experiences of young adults undergoing presymptomatic genetic testing for familial cancer: a longitudinal grounded theory study.

Enabling informed choice is an essential component of care when offering young adults presymptomatic testing for a genetic condition. A systematic review on this topic revealed that many young adults grew up with little information regarding their genetic risk and that parents had applied pressure to them during the testing decision-making process. However, none of the studies retrieved were conducted in South European countries. To address this gap, we undertook a qualitative study based on grounded theory to explore the psychosocial implications of presymptomatic testing for hereditary cance

Queuing theory under competitive social foraging may explain a mathematical equivalence of delay and probability in impulsive decision-making.

Intertemporal and probabilistic decision-making has been studied in psychiatry, ecology, and neuroeconomics. Because drug addicts and psycopaths often make risky decisions (e.g., drug misuse and aggression), investigation into types of impulsivity in intertemporal and probabilistic choices (delay and probability discounting) are important for psychiatric treatments. Studies in behavioral ecology proposed that delay and probability discounting are mediated by the same psychological process, because a decrease in probability of winning corresponds to an increase in delay until winning. According

Reproductive identity expression, reinforcement and defence: A constructivist grounded theory of non‑normative pregnancy and childbirth decisions in the UK.

Increasingly, women in the United Kingdom decline routine or recommended maternity care, give birth outside clinical guidelines, or make other non-normative choices. Despite policy commitments to personalised, rights-based care, such decisions often generate anxiety within maternity systems. Understanding women's motivations is essential for safe, rights-respecting care and informed policy. Existing approaches are predominantly shaped by clinician and system perspectives, often assuming motivations without evidence from women themselves. Current evidence frequently reduces lived experiences to

A multi-granularity narrative cloud selection framework for architectural meaning-making integrating the PIA model and three-way decision theory.

Architectural experience depends not only on perceptual fluency but also on whether users can successfully construct higher-order semantic meaning from complex built form. In the Pleasure-Interest Model of Aesthetic Liking (PIA model), the controlled-processing stage differentiates interest, confusion, and boredom. In conventional architectural cognition research, however, confusion is often treated as a negative indicator of communicative failure. This paper challenges that assumption and argues that confusion is especially important in architectural meaning-making because it identifies a pop

Understanding farmers' naturalistic decision making around prophylactic antibiotic use in lambs using a grounded theory and natural language processing approach.

The routine use of antibiotics for prevention of disease in neonatal lambs has been highlighted as inappropriate, yet research suggests that many farmers in the UK still carry out this practice. The aim of the study was to understand farmers' naturalistic decision-making around prophylactic antibiotic use in lambs. Data from 431 posts by 133 different users of an online discussion forum were analysed quantitatively using natural language processing and qualitatively using a grounded theory approach. Results from the qualitative analysis identified five categories that influenced farmers risk p

Making decisions one drink at a time and the "just one drink" effect: A fuzzy-trace theory model of harmful drinking.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the decision factors that drive harmful alcohol use among young adults is of practical and theoretical importance. We apply fuzzy-trace theory (FTT) to investigate a potential danger that may arise from the arguably correct notion that a single drink carries no meaningful risk. Decisions that are mentally represented as one drink at a time could contribute to excessive drinking. METHODS: College students (N = 351) made a series of decisions to take or decline eight hypothetical drinks presented one at a time. Outcome measures included each decision, recent alcohol co

Are organ donation communication decisions reasoned or reactive? A test of the utility of an augmented theory of planned behaviour with the prototype/willingness model.

OBJECTIVES: To explore whether people's organ donation consent decisions occur via a reasoned and/or social reaction pathway. DESIGN: We examined prospectively students' and community members' decisions to register consent on a donor register and discuss organ donation wishes with family. METHOD: Participants completed items assessing theory of planned behaviour (TPB; attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control (PBC)), prototype/willingness model (PWM; donor prototype favourability/similarity, past behaviour), and proposed additional influences (moral norm, self-identity, recipi

Theory-based approach to developing an implementation plan to support the adoption of a patient decision aid for Down syndrome prenatal screening.

BACKGROUND: Our team has developed a decision aid to help pregnant women and their partners make informed decisions about Down syndrome prenatal screening. However, the decision aid is not yet widely available in Quebec's prenatal care pathways. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify knowledge translation strategies and develop an implementation plan to promote the use of the decision aid in prenatal care services in Quebec, Canada. METHODS: Guided by the Knowledge-to-Action Framework and the Theoretical Domains Framework, we performed a synthesis of our research (11 publications) on prenatal scre

The role of responsible gambling strategy and gambling passion in the online gamblers' decision-making process: revising the theory of planned behavior.

This study revised the theory of planned behavior (TPB) by incorporating the new concepts of gambling passion and responsible gambling strategy (RGS) to predict gamblers' intention to gamble in online sports betting. The data were collected at the end of March in 2012 through an online gambling website. The findings indicated that the inclusion of two types of gambling passion and two types of RGS explains online gambling intention well. Specifically, out of the original antecedent predictors of TPB, attitude toward online gambling was positively related to harmonious passion. Subjective norm

Three-way multi-criteria decision-making with linguistic information using prospect-regret theory and generalised TODIM for heart failure data analysis.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading global cause of mortality, and timely monitoring can help assess its severity. Electronic medical records contain information on patients’ symptoms, physical characteristics, and clinical laboratory test results. These data can be used in biostatistical analysis to identify patterns and relationships that may not be apparent to medical practitioners. However, when experts confront risk in complex settings, their bounded rationality may influence their decision-making behaviour. Moreover, the irrational behaviour of a single expert can substantially affect de
